Please help us help these young learners.
Hello,

My name is Ashley Greene-Woods, and I am a doctoral candidate at Lamar University. I am currently working on my dissertation (IRB approval IRB-FY20-129). My study focuses on spoken language development in deaf and hard of hearing children who use spoken language as their primary method of communication. First, a little bit about the background of the study:

As a parent myself, I know the importance of making sure our children are meeting age-appropriate linguistic milestones. Language, regardless of the modality, is the foundation that future reading and academic performance builds upon. Many children, both hearing and deaf, follow a similar typical acquisition timetable, acquiring language and communication skills on similar schedules and at comparable rates.

However, for many DHH children for whom typical language development is interrupted or compromised, language outcomes may not be sufficient to support higher levels of language growth. Sensitive periods for language development have been identified, and gaps in development can occur. Ultimately, unknown gaps can lead to language delays that may become compounded when they are unresolved.

The Spoken Language Checklist (SLC) was developed based on milestones identified in other checklists, but has been edited so that parents can easily monitor their DHH child's language milestones on a regular basis. Norms have been developed and identified for the SLC.

The SLC can be used with children from birth to five years old who are learning spoken English and communicate verbally and auditory. It can be used with children who are bimodal, learning both spoken and visual languages.

Now, back to the purpose of this: my dissertation is focusing on collecting data on the SLC from parents of DHH children (between 0-5) who use spoken language. The survey does not ask for any identifying information, such as name or location, and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. As a compensation for the parents' time, they may enter their e-mail address at the end of the survey to be placed in a raffle to win a one year membership to their local children's museum for a family of four. If you know of parents who may be interested, would you consider sharing?

As a family that has been helped tremendously by this amazing organization, we wanted to say THANK YOU to all of the great folks that attended last night’s event and pledged your dollars to help All Ears continue their journey. Your commitment to such a great cause has helped so many beautiful kids realize something that the majority of us take for granted, the gifts of hearing and speaking. We applaud you, we thank you, and as Luca said in their opening...we love you!- The Pagani Family
Good morning! We had a great time at the All Ears Listening and Language Center fundraiser last night. This is an incredible preschool in Montgomery County for children who are deaf. Instead of sign language, they learn how to listen and speak with their cochlear implants. The goal is for every student to be in mainstream classrooms by the time they reach kindergarten! Brooke, a 7th grader, is an alum of this type of therapy and was my incredible co-host!! We auctioned off the cutest puppies to a couple of great families!!
Please support Sam and Glenda Malana as we run thr 2K as a school! Every little bit helps! Love our families!
What a sweet, sweet reaction to voices!

Where kids with hearing loss learn to Hear and Be Heard through a listening & spoken language program All Ears!

Listening and Language Center is a not for profit organization passionate about and dedicated to empowering families of deaf and hard of hearing children to develop listening, spoken language and literacy skills.

Fun fact: The All Ears! clinic works with both children AND adults who have hearing loss.

Emily, a teacher, received her Cochlear N8 processors and is able to hear her students, even when they are behind her.

Forrest’s tiny hearing aids allow him to be a part of family functions again!

Schedule your hearing assessment today by calling the All Ears! clinic at 936.251.3021.

Many of our children have an IEP or 504 Plan for school. Here is a wonderful graphic that helps explain the difference between an IEP and 504 Plan. These individualized education plans help our children thrive in the school classroom and get the extra help they need. Remember, these plans do not stop at 12th grade! They can be utilized in college as well!

There is a lot of helpful information about IEPs and 504 Plans on our Ear Community website at the following link, including IFSPs (birth to 5 or kindergarten) and transitioning to an IEP and/or 504 Plan: https://earcommunity.org/helpful-resources/education/

Once a month, All Ears! professionals guide a parent resource/support group called IPSY- Informed Parent Support for You.

This last meeting was a fun and powerful parent panel.

We are thankful for the parents who shared their journey with us. It was especially helpful to hear those journeys from parents who have independent young adults now❣️

Thank you for sharing and connecting!

Next month we will have our own audiologist, Dr. Megan, as a guest speaker to answer all of your audiological questions.

We would love for you to join us . Email [email protected] or message us for more info❣️

Wow! What a great morning learning about Montgomery County’s strengths and challenges from Julie Martineau, TX
and Greater Houston Community Foundation at SHSU-The Woodlands Center.

All Ears! is working hard to help close that gap of only 57% of children are kindergarten ready by providing an exceptional, collaborative, language rich, preschool program for kids with hearing loss in our community.

Did you know we start working directly with the school districts when our kids are 3 to make sure they are ready to enter mainstream kindergarten?

Thank you for an insightful morning❣️

Why You CAN’T Get OTC Hearing Aids For Kids

A great article and important information.

Why You CAN’T Get OTC Hearing Aids For Kids The FDA has approved OTC hearing aids for adults but children can’t use OTC hearing aids for several reasons. Read why your child needs a professional.

Parents, check out this great resource to help you better understand the IEP process.

Begin the new year with AG Bell's January Parent Chat session on Thursday, January 19, 7:00pm CST.

"Understanding the ABCs and 123s of IEPs! What's Your Question?"

Many times, IEP teams come together and inundate parents with information without giving them the time they need to process the information and formulate questions. Parents often leave meetings with more questions than they went in with. Join Alex Mestres, a teacher of the deaf and educational specialist, as we slow it down, talk about the process, and answer some of the burning questions you may have about IEPs or 504 plans.

All Parent Chat sessions will be conducted in English. Register at the link in our bio!

Parent Chats are designed and intended for parents/family members; we kindly ask that only parent/family members attend.

We posted a picture of an ear mold yesterday for a baby about…………

7 weeks old. 👶🦻

These molds are taken to fit her hearing technology properly. Since she is growing growing growing… she will need between 5 and 10 molds her first year. 😁

Did you know the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing recommends babies are properly diagnosed and enrolled in a program by 3 months?

This baby is right on schedule thanks to early diagnosis and our collaborative services. Dr. Megan (audiologist) and Allison (Auditory Verbal Therapist/ Interventionist) worked together to help ease mom’s concerns and answer all her questions.

When she’s 18 months she can begin All Ears! specialized and inclusive education program. This program works collaboratively with our professionals but also with the school districts to ensure All Ears! kids enter mainstream kindergarten at the same readiness as their friends without hearing loss.

Call or message us for more information.

Great job mom and Dr. Megan❣️

Take a p👀k into a therapy session where MJ is learning to use his new CI (cochlear implant).

Mom says he loves his new ear so much she can’t do anything else in the morning until it’s on or he gets upset. 🦻

The sound is so clear, he is able to mimic sounds he’s never done before.

Great job, MJ, Mom, and Allison❣️

Do they hear what we hear?

Hearing technology is not like putting on a pair of glasses. It provides the amazing access to sound, but the brain still needs to be developed for language, listening and talking.

That’s when it’s time for the professional team and the caregivers to shine by working together to develop the brain❣️

Take a p👀k into an AVT (Auditory Verbal Therapy) session to see how the foundation for language is developed.

As our extraordinary interventionist, Allison says, “ It is always exciting to hear their vocalizations begin to change based on what they are hearing and watch them think about how they can change their voices to match what they are hearing from others- this is the foundation to intelligible speech production.”

Christmas came a little early. Cochlear Americas newest processor, N8, was approved in November and Dracen's mom didn't waste a second advocating for him.

He is the FIRST person in the greater HOUSTON area to get this fabulous upgrade. He is now able to stream via bluetooth directly to his hearing technology.

He's already got a favorite thing to stream...The Grinch.

Dr. Julie mapped (programmed) his fancy new technology and they took it for a test run in the audiology booth.

Happy Hearing, Dracen, and Great Job, Mom, Cochlear Americas, and Dr. Julie❣❣
