Initiate Life

I help adults overcome frustration in relationships at home and at work. I offer online classes on the Enneagram and use it as a tool in private coaching sessions.

Day 18: Grateful for my walking buddies today. I know I'm fortunate to have a supportive husband and family. Not everyone does and honestly, John and I have had our struggles.⁣⁣
To still be married after almost 40 years and holding hands as we walk is a miracle I don't take for granted. And, as a private and reserved person (Enneagram 5), I haven't always given him the chance to show up in supportive ways. That's something I regret.⁣⁣
But we're still growing, still learning, still enjoying each other's company and that's pretty sweet. Plus, isn't that a cute kid that came with us?! ⁣⁣

Day 17: Today I'm grateful for perspective. Not long ago, I wouldn't post a photo of myself like this. I would have judged myself for being heavier than I've ever been, my makeup is worn off, and my hair is flat. But you know what? On this particular day, life was sweet. And some days this is how you'll find me - content inwardly and disheveled outwardly. And that's not all. ⁣

See, in this photo, I was also pleased with the weight loss I have had. I was sitting next to my grandson on a delightful spring outing and the day was too perfect NOT to take a photo. After last year, it felt so good to be out, having fun and not thinking about serious things.⁣

A while back, my point of view would be to keep this photo under wraps. But as my compassion for others has grown over the past year, so has my understanding of myself.

I don't want to just put out images that show me put together. Yes, that's accurate some of the time. But not today. This is me today. And life is good. ✨⁣

Day 16: Today I'm grateful for work. I know this may seem basic but there were times last year when I couldn't do these things. To be able to contribute my skills and make the world better. To have the mental ability to organize and plan. To have a place to work and think and connect with others. To put in hard effort and feel the satisfaction of a day well spent.

Day 13: Grateful for the predictability of seasons.⁣

This tree is in our backyard and only blooms a few days each spring. It's positioned in such a way that some years we miss it, which makes seeing it today all the more special.⁣

You may wonder if you're ever going to bloom. Or maybe you feel like it's your time and you'd like someone to notice. I get it. But if it's your time to bloom, then by golly put all of your focus, all of your energy, and all of your joy into blooming. And then, bloom baby, bloom.

Day 9: What encouraging caption would you write with today's photo?

Day 8: Don't you love those moments when someone says just what you need to hear? Or when you get a card in the mail because someone thought of you?⁣

They're like sparks that lighten my day. They motivate me to do something nice for someone else.⁣

Sometimes those sparks show up in unexpected places, like the leaf I spotted this morning. Thank you, God.⁣

Have a good weekend!

Day 6: You were made for life. ⁣

This is a live oak tree and even though we had a winter freeze, this tree is struggling more than the others nearby. When I got up close, I could see why. (Swipe and you'll see why, too.)⁣

The moss doesn't weigh much and probably doesn't take much from the tree but when there's so much, it adds up. Other things get caught up in it, making it worse.⁣

I wanted to cut the moss away. I imagined the deep inhale it would take if it was free of these life-stealing growths.⁣

What's weighing you down? What have you picked that doesn't belong? It doesn't seem like much at the time. It's just one more thing. But it adds up.

What are you entangled with that isn't really you? You were made for life but this is keeping you from what could be. ⁣

Fortunately, you aren't a tree. You can make choices and changes. You are made for life.⁣

Day 5: Your needs are not too much.

Imagine a time lapse video of these roots working their way out and into the soil. They would be reaching, pushing, working to get
what's necessary for healthy living - nutrients, water, and stability. We aren't much different.

If you're in a season of learning, growing, and doing new things, it stands to reason that your needs might increase for a time. It's okay for you to reach out and draw on resources, too.

You aren't designed to do all the things and provide for all your needs by yourself.

Some people want support but have a hard time receiving it. If that's you, I get it. It seems easier, maybe better/stronger, to be the giver. Needing support sounds so...well, needy.

The beauty in receiving is not just getting what you need. Support and connection ARE benefits in and of themselves even if nothing else comes your way.

When you allow yourself to be vulnerable and receptive to help, you allow yourself to be seen, known, and understood in an real way. You are open to connection, support, and love.

Where do you find support? Do you dig in and receive it?

"We have every right to decide whether a tear is something we want to repair but it is our responsibility to explore both our journey back to trust, connection, safety and security, or our resistance to it." -Vienna Pharaon

Day 4: Do have voices in your head, telling you all the things you don't want to hear? Me too.

"You're doing too much." "You're not doing enough." "You're not going far enough." "You've gone too far." "You're not doing it right."

Remember why you started. Remember that one step in the right direction is still progress. You aren't doing it for them. You're the one on this path.

Day #3: Three weeks ago, our part of Texas was in a deep freeze. I know someone who had their toilet tank freeze inside their house. 🥶 But today, this tree is budding.

It encourages me to keep going even when things happen outside of my intended timetable. Keep pressing forward with the goodness you're meant to bring forward. These blossoms are soft and open, colorful and fragrant because the tree didn't give up in hard times.

New beginnings. Fresh starts. It's never to late to start again.

My word for this year is {Rise}. From the beginning, it inspired me. Little by little it's becoming more visible in my life.

Last year took a toll on me. It feels good to have agency again, to feel hope, and to look forward to what God brings from ashes.

Nothing is wasted. The timing isn't what I planned but I'm right on time. It's a good day.

Creating space and providing opportunities for people to feel safe, to open up to what's possible for them is one of my favorite things. ✨

Continuing to work on a visual for my word of the year for the Reflect & Renew class. It's pretty fun to think about building on these old geometry pages that have perfect angles and descriptions - right up an Enneagram Five's alley. But life isn't all neat and tidy, lined up like a linear mathematical equation is it? Fortunately, the Enneagram doesn't put me in a box. Instead, it shows me a way out. I can expand and grow, explore and see what else is out there. 🌱

Isn't it strange how vastly different we see these small acts? of kindness If we're on the receiving end, they can mean everything, be life-changing. But to be the one giving? We put it off or discount it a thousand different ways. Imagine what could happen if we let our love bloom.

The Reflect &. Renew class started this week. Today, I'm using an old canvas for the base of my vision board. And I'll incorporate pages from a 1932 mathematics and calculations book.

Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. -Jon Acuff ⁣
I caught myself comparing again. It’s not easy to admit. It is a bummer but it beats doing it over and over again and NOT knowing about it.⁣
I can think of two reasons we might compare ourselves to others but I don’t see any benefits. 1) We compare to see where we are lacking. This is deflating. 2) We compare to see how we excel over others. This is arrogance. ⁣⁣
It’s not fun to see comparison pop up again but that’s part of the growth process.⁣
What if instead, I was curious? Could I learn find a new way of doing something from someone? Or can I find a way to help someone that’s just starting out?⁣⁣
Curiosity can build connections with others where comparison leads to division.⁣⁣

In every adult there dwells the child that was, and in every child there lies the adult that will be. -John Connolly⁣⁣⁣
As humans, our bodies grow but the emotional part of ourselves can get held back. Things like loss or a shocking event can knock us off course. ⁣And extended stress can really stunt our emotional well-being.

Chances are, you experienced some derailing in the past twelve months. My question is, how do you get back on track?⁣⁣⁣
I easily get blown off course as a highly sensitive person. But if I try tospped up the process and do what others do, I'm left empty and exhausted. It can feel like I'm unraveling with just a thread of Me left. ⁣⁣⁣
Michelle Chalfant’s book, The Adult Chair, describes a process that helps us find our way back to healing.

It reminds me of the first time I heard about using empty chairs in a coaching session. I was training with a group of coaches in Kirkland, WA and when my turn came, I was surprised by the experience. I noticed a shift that still benefits me today.⁣⁣⁣
As I think about how to move forward from 2020, I know healing and growth cannot happen by just changing my mind or following someone else’s formula. It has to be a whole-hearted move from within - integrating my head, heart, and actions. ⁣⁣⁣
So I wonder, which chair are you in, and do you want to move forward?⁣
We can get antsy and try to act like we have it all together. But if we move prematurely, we lack what it takes to stay in a different chair for long.
If you want to experience growth in 2021, spend time reflecting on the past. Sort through what’s true and what isn’t. If you’d like some help with that, check out my Reflect & Renew class. It will be a gentle, go-at-your-own pace class. We will learn about ourselves and who we are meant to be. ⁣⁣⁣⁣We’ll grow from the inside out.⁣⁣⁣

Registration ends today.⁣

What are you making? A beautiful home? An amazing business? A healthy life?

One of the things that energizes me, motivates me, and scares me is that I have a role in the life I live. I can coast and let things happen (or not) or I can engage. This year, little by little, brick by brick, I am rebuilding. I'm so EXCITED about the class that's forming. Excited about the differences we'll see as work through it. It's something I started doing for me and then invited others to come, too

What are you building? What are your dreams? It's time to dream again.

Do you feel like you’re floundering? Maybe not in every area but one annoying area, that no matter what you try you just can’t seem to get past.⁣⁣⁣
Do you know the next step but resist taking it? Maybe you wonder if it’s the right route to take. That’s okay. We all struggle like this sometimes - it’s part of being human. ⁣⁣⁣
In social science, *𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺* is a person’s ability to act on their own, make decisions for themselves, and accept the consequences. It’s something we associate with mature adults. Yet, studies show that on average, 80% of New Year resolutions fail by the second week in February. Even when it is a good habit that we choose to take on, change is hard.⁣⁣⁣
What if, instead of trying to add on more things to do, you stepped into more of who you are meant to be? A butterfly wasn’t meant to be a caterpillar forever. A sea turtle was not made for land. ⁣⁣⁣
If you need some time to step back and sort through things and have more clarity, check out my Reflect & Renew class. It will be a gentle, go-at-you-own pace class where we learn more about ourselves and who we are meant to be. ⁣⁣⁣
You need to register by midnight on Friday, February 6.

Resolutions are fleeting. Lasting change is easier to attain when it comes from the inside out.⁣⁣⁣

Transitions can be hard. Even when we want change and are excited about events to come, we can have a hard time making decisions or doubt decisions we've made.

Sometimes it's a simple thing that will work itself out but other times, we procrastinate way too long and still can't move forward!

I'm starting a class in a few days that may help. We will give ourselves permission to breathe and play. We'll get creative and allow new ideas to surface. We'll get in touch with what's important and through that process, you might just find the key you need to get unstuck.

If this sounds interesting to you, find more details here:

Are you ready for some change? Are you needing something positive and uplifting? I know I do.

When I stepped back earlier this month for a personal retreat, I realized that last year took a big toll on me. I mean, I knew it but I didn’t KNOW it.

It affected our family and my business and trying to hold everything together only works for so long. It feels like I’ve been holding my breath for months.

And while the rest of the world is ready to hustle and get after it, I recognize the signs that I need something different. I need to step back and do some soul care.

I spoke with my coach about this and thought some more. And over time, I came up with an idea I’m really excited about. I was going to do it alone and then felt the nudge to include others. So, I offered it to people on my newsletter list. I’m wondering if you’d like to join me, too.

This is different from any class I’ve ever done. It’s called Reflect & Renew and it’s a combination of group and independent prompts and creative exercises to help us remember that life is good. Love and friendship are good. Beauty is good. And as we look for the good, we’ll see more of it. We’ll notice a shift as our spirits lift.

We'll also talk about how our Enneagram type influences our past, present, and future. We'll consider how it's affecting how we stay stuck and how to find breakthrough. We’ll grow personally, emotionally, and spiritually. It’ll be fun and it will be healing.

Maybe this isn’t for you right now. But if this piques your interest, check out this link for more details. Or message me. There’s nothing like learning and growing in community.

Here's that link:

This past year has caused many of us to unravel. It's time to regroup and remember who we are.

I'm excited about this new class, Reflect & Renew. It was created in response to the question I often hear, "After I find my type, what's my next step?"

This course dovetails our Monthly Meetup classes and incorporates some of the same material. This year, we're using the Monthly Meetups to talk about our relationships with others. In THIS class, we are looking inward to reconnect with ourselves.

How can we really connect with others without doing it with ourselves.

This is a 5-month class and you do need to apply.

It only opens up twice a year so get in on this class while you can!

New Classes on the website!

It's been a looooong time since we've had a Monthly Meetup and I'm ready to get back into the groove.

The Monthly Meetups are times set aside to talk and learn about the Enneagram in light of a particular topic. They allow us to meet up with other people who are also growing and learning. They allow us to think and ask questions and more importantly, hear another point of view. Without those other perspectives, we just stay inside our own type.

The theme for this year is Relationships.

The past year took a toll on relationships. Working and schooling from home, we wondered if we really liked the people around us. It affected children, parents, marriages, work…the list goes on and on.

My hope is that these classes will help us to mend areas that have been hurt and bruised over the past year so that we can begin to restore relationships that foster cooperation and compassion.

We meet online from 6:30-8 PM Central time.

The January Meetup is on Thursday, 1/28.

Beauty is good for the soul.⁣

The craziness of last year had me topsy-turvy. Looking back, it reminds me of the time John and I were skiing on Mt Hood in Oregon. He said he liked to take the last run of the day and what did I know? That might have been my sixth time on skis. Since then, in many years of trying, I never graduated from easy slopes. Anyway, we are the last ones off the lift that day and before we got too far into the run, a whiteout came. Without warning it came up and we lost our bearings. A whiteout is snowstorm that reduces visibility to zero. And that's no joke. Between the snow on the mountain and what's in the air, everything was white. So here I am, a disoriented beginner on a steep mountain with daylight ending and we cannot tell what's up or down, right or left. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. I sat down. Didn't know what else to do. I begged John to call for a helicopter but we didn't have phones back then and they couldn't fly in that storm. Besides, they wouldn't risk their life for me. I don't know how long we were there. I wonder now how we did get down. Probably inch by inch sitting down.⁣

I don't like obscure. I dislike murky. Give me pure light and crisp shadows. They are works of art to me. I love clarity and feel secure when I sense it. Coming out of last year, I needed to find some space to breathe. To find my feet on the floor again and get a sense of what's up, what's down, what's right and left. I knew I felt off but now I see that I just needed to get my besrings. Heading into this year, I don't know what the future holds. But the past few days have helped me remember who I am and Whose I am. ⁣

My Story

I help parents and small business owners increase their influence and strengthen their connection with others.

Why? Because to really make a positive difference in the lives of others, we must learn to relate in ways that others will listen.

What I Didn’t Know

Unfortunately, I didn’t know how to create authentic connection when I first started. I wanted to be a person of influence both as a parent and an entrepreneur but I didn’t know how. I copied what I saw others doing except that felt awkward and forced. My relationships lacked the depth that I longed for.
