If you're looking for "Size & Strength", research shows that using a variety of exercises (i.e. variations in exercises used such as squats, deadlifts, leg presses, and lunges) can be more effective in producing increased hypertrophy in ALL muscles involved as well as greater strength gains. It appears that variety is not only the spice of life, but increases the portion size as well.

Great discussion on fascia (connective tissue) & muscle from our friends at PTA Global. Moving in a manner that elicits response to the fascial matrix aides in injury prevention and enhanced communication for greater mobility throughout the entire body.

~ FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY ~
Contrary to what we are typically taught, muscles don't necessarily shorten and lengthen during activity as we think (Kawakami 2006; Ishikawa 2008). As seen below, the faster (more explosive) the movement, and even during isometric 'muscle actions', muscles will actually shorten. This is true even during "eccentric phases" when we typically are taught they are lengthening.

"So what's the deal?" you ask? Well, the deal is that muscles are force generators - they produce force. "Tendons" - and even beyond 'tendons', the fascial matrix - transfer that force. So, simplistically speaking, the fascial matrix is more often doing the "lengthening". The muscle-tendinous unit works as a 'unit' (team)! So while the entire MTU lengthens and shortens, it may not necessarily be because of what the muscle is doing ;)

That said, if the 'fascia' / tendons) are doing the majority of the lengthening, might it be that the tendons / fascial matrix are the structures mostly injured and not muscles?
