Dear Teachers and Staff,

The tragic events that occurred in Uvalde, Texas have definitely heightened our awareness of school safety. The unimaginable circumstance of sending your child to school and them not returning is every parent's worse nightmare. As an educator for the past 18 years, this tragedy has made me reflect on how to prevent this tragedy at TWCA.

We have contacted Montgomery County Police Department and they have already begun making frequent rounds on our campus. We have reminded staff to ensure all classroom doors are locked. Front staff will continue to not allow any visitors on campus without being checked in and running their driver's licenses in Hall Pass. Scholars have been reminded not to allow anyone, including people they know into the building. We are being hypervigilant while scholars are outdoors. We will be looking for any strangers who shouldn't be near campus.

We know that events like this are not only tragic and painful, but they can often lead to anxiety and fear felt by our entire school community. We understand that our students and staff may need additional support during this time. We want to reinforce that we have support services in place and available to those who may be struggling with today’s horrible event.
A few mental health resources can be found below and our counseling team is available at [email protected] if you or someone you know is in need of assistance.

We pray for the community of Uvalde and those educators, students, and families most impacted by this senseless act of violence.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I hope that this update finds you well and that you are as eager as I am to help our students and staff finish out this year strong and healthy! It seems that along with the normal Spring showers and pollen, the Spring has also ushered in a new round of illness-causing germs.

Since our return from Spring Break, I have seen an increase in influenza, strep throat, and viruses causing stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and/or fever throughout our school and community. Thankfully we have seen almost no new cases of Covid-19 on campus.

I wanted to reach out with a few reminders:

• If your student is absent due to illness, please notify the teacher, front office, or myself. You may also send a note with them upon their return. However, please reach out as soon as possible if your doctor recommends that your student be out for an extended period.

• If your student misses more than 3 consecutive days of school due to illness, then you must submit a doctor’s note upon their return to campus.

• If your student experiences diarrhea, vomiting, and/or a fever >100.0, they must not return to campus for at least a full 24 hours after their last episode of these symptoms without medication to prevent them.

• Even if your student meets the criteria to return to campus, please ensure that they feel well enough to remain in class prior to their return.

• Please have a plan in place so that if you are called to pick your student up early from school, you or someone else (who is listed on the “Who Can Pick Me Up” form) are available to pick your student up within the hour.

•Please see the excerpt below from the Responsive Education Solutions 2021-2022 Student-Parent Handbook for verbiage reiterating these points, as well as a full list of illnesses/symptoms for which your student should be excluded from campus.

Doctor’s Note after an Absence for Illness
Upon return to school, a student absent for more than three consecutive days because of a personal illness must bring a statement from a doctor or health clinic verifying the illness or condition that caused the student’s extended absence from school. Otherwise, the student’s absence may be considered unexcused and if so, would be in violation of compulsory attendance laws.

Contagious Diseases/Conditions
To protect other students from contagious illnesses, students infected with certain diseases are not allowed to come to school while contagious. If school staff suspects that a student may have a contagious disease based on signs or symptoms the student has, staff will exclude the student from attendance until all suspicious symptoms are gone or until the child’s physician documents that the student may return to school. Parents of a student with a communicable or contagious disease should keep their child home and phone the school office so that other students who might have been exposed to the disease can be alerted.

Illness during School Hours
A student who becomes ill during school hours is to report to the teacher, who will then send him or her to the school office. No student is allowed to go home without the parent being notified. Students are not to call parents from school phones or cell phones asking to go home; such calls are to be made from the school office by school staff. A parent/guardian will not be called for each clinic visit. A parent/guardian will be notified by phone call or clinic information form of the following types of injuries or illnesses:

• head injury – potential for delayed repercussions/possible concussions
• vomiting, diarrhea, and/or fever greater than 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit – potential for a contagious condition/illness
• ineffective medication regimen – such as, but not limited to, asthma inhaler, diabetes management, ADHD
• life-threatening occurrences
• orthopedic injuries that are not relieved with rest and ice
• any injury/illness deemed necessary by the nurse

When your child is ill, please contact the school to let us know he or she won’t be attending that day. It is important to remember that schools are required to exclude students with certain illnesses from school for periods of time as identified in state rules. Students should stay home from school due to illness if any of the following are present:

• fever of 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher in the past 24 hours;
• vomiting and/or diarrhea in the past 24 hours;
• itchy, red eyes with discharge;
• unknown rash;
• ringworm (until treatment has been started);
• live head lice; or
• jaundice.

Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Mary Kennerly, RN, School Nurse
