[10/18/20]   We apologize for the audio not working on our Facebook Live stream! If you head over to ap.church/livestream, the audio is working there!

World Mission Sunday is on October 18. This week, we've been interviewing parishioners about their experience on mission. Today, we're blessed by words from our very own Franklin Marsan, the Food Pantry Manager here at St. Anthony's.

• What attracted you to go on mission?
"I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, so from the beginning this Mission was very dear and near to my heart. It was an incredible opportunity to go back and help my people. I was also attracted to the humble (but aggressive!) Mission plan that Deacon Mike Mims and Deacon Mike Mort had envisioned for the villagers in Honduras by bringing to their doorsteps the much-needed medical, dental and sacramental needs."

• What lessons have you learned from the communities you’ve served on mission?
"The main lesson is to learn how humble and thankful are the villagers of these communities. To learn and imitate their actions and be grateful to God for everything He gives to us."

• How can we answer the call of World Missions Sunday here in The Woodlands?
"By actively participating in the several Outreach Ministries established here in our Parish, such as Food Pantry, Kolbe Ministry, Knights of Columbus, and St Vincent de Paul. We can also join other non-parish entities such as Montgomery County Food Bank. As Jeff Cavins says: “It’s is time for us to decide to be a Followers of Christ and not just Fans of Christ.”"

•Any words of advice for those seeking to become a missionary?
"Put all your trust in the Holy Trinity and pray for the guidance of our Blessed Mother for every minute that one in on Mission. We can over prepare and make all kinds of check lists for all the needs of the Mission. However, we must first have an open, humble, loving, caring heart to go on Mission and help the villagers, even if it is for just one week, to carry their cross."

•How important is prayer in answering the call to mission?
"Prayer, meditation and contemplation are key aspects of a successful mission. As we prepare ourselves for Mission, and while on Mission, we always start and end our tasks/days, with prayers. Prayers bring us strength, closeness, brotherhood and everlasting friendships among Missionaries."

St. Anthony Relic Reveal Episode #4 - St. Teresa of Ávila

How much do you know about St. Teresa of Ávila? The first woman to ever be named a Doctor of the Church, she lived a life that was both extraordinary and exceptionally ordinary at the same time. She had incredible spiritual visions, but also struggled with low self-esteem. She created a new religious order, but she also enjoyed talking about boys and clothes more than talking about Jesus while growing up.

She is an incredible saint to learn about, so join Michael Gormley as he dives into the life of St. Teresa, as well as expands on what she taught us about the necessity of mental prayer, and how we can apply it to our own lives.

World Mission Sunday is this weekend, on October 18. Yesterday, we began highlighting individuals in our community with a passion for mission. Today the focus is on Michelle Rieger. Michelle and her husband Leon have been heavily involved in St. Anthony's mission initiatives for several years. We asked Michelle about her experiences with the call to mission.

•What attracted you to go on mission?
"Going on mission has always pulled at my heart. It was wanting to serve alongside someone else, walk in their shoes and see their struggles and joys."

• What lessons have you learned from the communities you have served on mission?
"One very important lesson I learned by going on mission is that it is more important to “Be” than to “Do”. It is more important to be present with the people you are serving by interacting with them and working alongside them rather than just doing a project. It is about the relationships you build and learning about the people in the villages. One of my favorite experiences is when we have Women’s night in the villages. This is a night where women missionaries and women of the village come together. The stories, laughter, tears and hopes that come out of those evenings are amazing."

• How can we answer the call of World Missions Sunday here in The Woodlands?
"You can answer the call to mission here in The Woodlands by volunteering for one of the many outreach programs in area, including those here at St. Anthony’s. During this pandemic, it is hard to find a way to give back, but something I have been able to do is volunteer at the food pantry. I enjoy visiting with the people as I check them in."

• Any words of advice for those seeking to become a missionary?
"If you are feeling called to be a missionary, please do not be afraid to go because you do not think you have anything to offer. I went on my first mission and didn’t have any medical training or dental training and I didn’t know the language. There are always ways you can help support the mission team. Do not worry about the potential language barrier. The universal language is love which can be conveyed with a smile or hug. On our first mission, my husband and I spent the night in El Mirador. We didn’t know the language, but we had a great time with the kids teaching them tic-tac-toe, how to make paper airplanes and teaching each other how to count in our native languages. We learned a lot about each other without needing to say a word. It was a night I will always cherish.

The people in these villages just want to know that people love them and remember them. Every year when we leave, they are always asking us to please come back. They do not want to be forgotten."

• How important is prayer in answering the call to mission?
"Going on mission will be difficult at times and require sacrifices. It is important to be connected to God in your discernment process through prayer."

Happy Feast Day to St. Teresa of Ávila!

Today is the feast day of St. Teresa of Ávila, who we revealed as our fourth saint relic coming to the Our Lady of the Angels chapel! Check back tomorrow for our full video on the life of St. Teresa!

St. Teresa of Ávila -- pray for us!

World Mission Sunday is coming up on October 18! St. Anthony's is blessed with a community of missionaries, individuals willing to pursue God's call to mission without regard to personal cost. This week we'll be hearing from a few of those individuals - starting with our own beloved Deacon Mike Mort.

• What attracted you to go on mission?
"Years ago, our Parish had no Adult Mission. I was asked to help organize the logistics for our first Mission to Honduras. As a Deacon (from Deaconos – to serve), our calling is to service. We have a Parish here at STAOP full of people who serve others. But not everyone has the means or availability to travel on a Mission trip. Those who can should try, as best they can, to serve on a Mission Trip."

• What lessons have you learned from the communities you’ve served on mission?
"The Communities we serve are made up of families who are always willing to help their neighbor. They have very little when compared to our standard of living, but are still very happy with what they do have. I think that is because as Missionaries we are not bringing Christ to these Communities. He is already there and they know it!!"

• How can we answer the call of World Missions Sunday here in The Woodlands?
"By supporting both the Archdiocese Mission Ministry and especially our Annual Honduras Mission through Prayer, Donations and joining our Parish Mission Team."

• Any words of advice for those seeking to become a missionary?
"Pray and don’t be afraid to try something new. You’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish! You will get all the help and training you need and will come away with the same attitude most of the Missionaries have: “I can’t wait to go back next year!”"

• How important is prayer in answering the call to mission? "Prayer, as with most things, is where we should always start. Scripture is a good source for discerning your call. Ephesians 2:10 - “For we are His handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.""

St. Teresa brought about immense renewal in the Catholic Church, had powerful spiritual visions, and was the first-ever female saint to be proclaimed a Doctor of the Church! She was an incredible woman of faith who faced normal, every day struggles: poor health, finding it hard to pray, and low self-esteem. Nevertheless, she persisted, and now her relic will soon be housed at St. Anthony!
