🏫 General education teachers are often the first to support students with diverse learning and behavioral needs — including those with disabilities.

Recognizing this, MLFC faculty Erin Rotheram-Fuller and Jesse Fleming have developed a fully online professional learning course: Special Education Practices for General Educators. Grounded in research and practical experience, this course offers strategies that educators and family members can use right away. It’s the first in a series of courses exploring special education topics like autism basics and behavior supports for all classrooms, available on the ASU Professional Educators Learning Hub.

Educator inspiration: Learn how teachers encouraged K-12 students to engage with science by exploring ways to combine agriculture with solar energy.

More than two dozen Arizona schools were part of a recently-concluded NSF-funded project: Sonoran Desert Photovoltaic Laboratory Citizen Science Network. 🌵 K-12 educators received professional learning support to integrate lesson plans that encouraged the development of students' problem-solving and STEM-based skills through photovoltaics/agrivoltaics.

The project reached about:
· 1,000 K–12 students
· 30 teachers
· 28 Arizona schools 🏫

“These students get so excited about coming to school every day,” said one of the teachers, Janet Ankrum . “It’s shown an improvement in attendance as well as enthusiasm and motivation about our curriculum.”

The project was guided by ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation faculty, including Michelle Jordan Steven Zuiker , as well as Christiana Honsberg, with the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at ASU. Arizona State University and The University of Arizona engineering and education faculty collaborated with K–12 educators and students to design the sustainability-inspired projects and share findings.
