A: 50¢ of every $1 goes to local charities. Past recipients include:
Second Harvest of the Big Bend, Habitat for Humanity, Big Bend Hospice, Grace Mission, the Tallahassee Bach Parley String Academy, CESC Kearney Center, Florida Panhandle hurricane relief projects, and many more.

The other half of proceeds fund St. John's own ministry projects, many of which also impact the wider community.

Have you been able to find beauty in today's confusing world?

Our latest Musical Moment features Zlatina Staykova, a St. John's Choir member and a cellist on the faculty for the Bach Parley String Academy. Zlatina recorded the beautiful "Courante," the first of six Cello Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, right in the middle of our campus renovations! It's a bit of a mess in Alfriend Hall, and today's world is messy too, but we encourage you to take time to find beauty amongst the chaos!

Cellist Zlatina Staykova answers some fun and some serious questions in this COCA "Artist Spotlight" feature in Tallahassee Magazine. Zlatina performs with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and is a faculty member at the Bach Parley String Academy in addition to other musical ventures.
We too are very excited about this weekend’s scholarship concert for the Bach Parley String Academy. Proud to be hosting it at St. John’s at 7 PM on Saturday evening. Suggested $10 donation to hear some beautiful music, support a fabulous program and enjoy and a wine and cheese reception following the recital. Hope to see you there!
Behind the Scenes with COCA: Tallahassee Bach Parley and the Bach Parley String Academy.

The Bach Parley's Valerie Prebys Arsenault on Baroque violin and guest artist Christina Kwon on harpsichord are getting ready for their special Saturday evening concert this weekend, September 7, (with a wine and cheese reception.) Kwon studies and performs in The Hague in the Netherlands and she is spending this summer here in Tallahassee. The Bach Parley performs Baroque music on period instruments and Valerie and Christina have included some great shots of their instrument for this concert.

Baroque period instruments have a unique sound - the stings of the violin are made of gut and the strings of the harpsichord are plucked instead of hammered, like in a piano. The sound is clear and transparent and resonates beautifully in performance spaces such as St John's Episcopal Church, Tallahassee FL where this concert will be held.

The Tallahassee Bach Parley is the umbrella organization for a non-profit music school, the Bach Parley String Academy. Founded in 2015, the String Academy offers violin, viola and cello lessons - and even offers ukulele classes.

COCA Grantee Spotlight: Tallahassee Bach Parley

The Tallahassee Bach Parley has been awarded a FY19 COCA Cultural Grant on behalf of Leon County and the City of Tallahassee, FL - Government. COCA celebrates their commitment to excellence and their contributions to our cultural community!

The Tallahassee Bach Parley brings the music of Baroque-era composers like J. S. Bach to life. Performing on period-style instruments, they offer unique, exceptional concert experiences that educate our community and encourage the talents of our region’s professional and student musicians. They present Baroque music as it was performed hundreds of years ago with a fresh sound immediately accessible today. The Bach Parley’s musicians – local professional performers and teachers, FSU faculty, and college students – are trained in historically informed performance. Many Bach Parley musicians also perform in Baroque music groups around the country, such as in Atlanta, New York, Texas, and Boston.

The French word “parley” means discussion, and a key element of Bach Parley concerts is the commentary from their music director to discuss historical context for the composers and their world and to offer suggestions about what to listen for in the music. These conversational remarks create a relaxed concert atmosphere and connect the audience with the performers.

The Bach Parley also runs the non-profit music school, the Bach Parley String Academy.

Don't miss their concert this Sunday, June 2: https://www.tallahasseearts.org/event/bach-parley-spring-concert-annual-reception/

I am sorry to announce that we must postpone this weekend’s Bach Parley concert (January 8 & 9, 2022). COCA Spotlight: Violinist taps into reinvention, ‘Roots’ with Tallahassee Bach Parley

Baroque violinist Aimée Rieger describes the early Italian music featured in the Tallahassee Bach Parley’s “Roots in the Ground” performance on Nov. 7 as a continuous circle.

The “chaconne” musical composition serves as the base of this era of music, and uses a repeating set of chords underneath an improvised melody. This gives the music a circular feel and speaks to Rieger on a deeper level about her own journey as a performer, educator, wife and mother.

“As a performer, you’re constantly reinventing yourself on this same but everchanging loop,” says Rieger. “I teach all the time and have two kids, so I was really thinking about my performance career and always recreating and reinventing myself.”

Before joining the Tallahassee Bach Parley and rooting her family in Tallahassee, Rieger’s career took her around the world, performing as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player on modern and baroque violin. She’ll share this upcoming performance with her husband, Eric Rieger, a tenor vocalist and professor at Florida State University.
