Choose Sealey Elementary

01/11/2021

Q. How long is the School Choice window open?
A. School Choice opened on January 5 and will be open until March 1, 5 p.m.

**This is NOT a first-come, first-served process. Applications will be processed after the March 1st deadline.**

Q. Where is the School Choice Application?
A. The School Choice Application is in your Focus Parent Portal, not on the School Choice website. You have to completely fill out the Parent Portal registration if you have not done so already. Go to www.leonschools.net then click on the A+ logo to get to the Focus Parent Portal page. You must use Google Chrome. We highly recommend using a laptop / Chromebook or desktop to complete the registration and application process. Please let your school or the School Choice office know if you need access to a device.

Once you are in your portal, select the student that you want to apply for School Choice. Nest, select "School Choice Application." Once you are in the application you will see the first section with your name and address info.

Q. I don't understand the second section. What should I select?
A. The second section is 6 boxes. If none of these 6 boxes apply to you scroll past them. You do not have to select one of these 6 boxes to complete and submit your application. You may scroll down and select your requested schools. You may select up to 3 schools. We encourage you to select 3 schools to have options in case your 1st choice is not approved.

Q. How do I know if I have successfully submitted the application? Will I receive an email?
A. Yes, you will receive an email as of today, January 7. Those who submitted applications prior to today may not receive an email, however, their applications were successfully submitted by pressing the 'Save' button. You can make sure it was saved/submitted by accessing the application in your parent portal, and also make any changes to it by March 1.

Q. Do all schools have a lottery?
A. Schools that we receive more requests than they have seats available will have a lottery.

Q. Do I need to apply again if my student is already on School Choice now?
A. No, you ONLY apply if you wish to change schools tor the next year / 2021-2022 school year.

Q. What do I do if my student is in VPK, 5th or 8th grade?
A. Your student will automatically be assigned to your home zone school next year. NOW is the time to apply for school choice to attend a school next year that is not your home zone school.

Q. What is my zoned school?
A. You are zoned by your home address. You can visit our website at www.leonschools.net and find my school zone at the top.

Q. When will I know if my student was approved?
A. Everyone will have the outcome in their Focus Parent Portal no later than March 27.

Q. What do I do if my student is approved?
A. If your student is approved, you must accept their approval in the Focus Parent Portal in order to complete the process of being enrolled in that school.

Safe Start Leon—Back to School 2020-2021

The COVID-19 era has brought challenges never before faced by our school district. The safety of our students, teachers and all employees is always our first priority. Reopening safely is our focus as we move forward for the 2020-2021 school year.

Our goal is to provide your child with the best educational experience possible with an enrollment option that fits your family's needs while taking steps to slow the transmission of COVID-19 for the safety of all.

Whatever enrollment option you choose, we are excited and ready to return to teaching and learning on Aug. 31st. With flexibility, compassion, patience and grace we will get through this pandemic together.

Please visit www.leonschools.net/reopenleon for the 2020-2021 Safe Start Leon Reopening Plan as approved by the Leon County School Board Tuesday, July 28, 2020, along with the Reopening PowerPoint.

We are diligently working to improve the Safe Start Leon website to help answer questions and keep you informed. Please check back frequently for updates.

Health and Safety FAQ’s

A. Masks will be required during transportation and transitions and when social distancing is not possible.

Q. What about masks for special needs students?
A. Each situation will be addressed individually to meet the needs of these students.

Q. What does the Daily Health Screening entail and when will it take place?
A. The screening consists of a temperature check and visual assessment (signs and symptoms) and will be done as early in the day as feasibly possible.

Q. Will COVID-19 testing be required prior to the start of school for staff and/or students?
A. No. Testing will not be required.

Q. What will happen if a child appears ill at school?
A. The student will be sent to a clinical area for assessment. If the student has a fever or appears ill, they will be placed in a safe, distanced area to await parent pickup.

A. New procedures are that a child must be fever free for 72 hours before returning to school.

Q. Will my child need a doctor’s note to return to school after having a fever?
A. No. A doctor’s note is only required for return after a diagnosis of being COVID-19 positive.

Q. Will I be notified if another student tests positive for COVID-19 in my child’s class or school?
A. Not necessarily. Due to HIPAA regulations, the health department or school official will notify only those who were determined by an interview to self-quarantine.

A. Not during the first semester (August-December). However, there will be virtual opportunities to volunteer.

Q. How often will my child’s classroom be cleaned?
A. Daily cleaning will occur with deep cleaning as needed. Each classroom will be provided a Hygiene Kit of cleaning and sanitation supplies for daily use.

Q. Will there be safety and well-being education?
A. Yes. There will be education that empowers students to learn about the role they play to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. This education will be ongoing online and in the classroom.
