Florida History Day and Florida Council for History Education are proud to announce the 2021 Teacher of Merit winner, Joshua Roberson, Thurgood Marshall Fundamental School.

Mr. Joshua Roberson, Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School’s Pre-AP World History and Geography teacher, has been a participant in National History Day for nearly a decade. Mr. Roberson facilitates training for new National History Day teachers in Pinellas County in addition to teaching with project-based learning principles. He holds a Masters of Education and a Bachelors in History from the University of Florida, degrees he has used to develop a teaching philosophy of experiential learning through study of diverse perspectives to foster “empathy for those who came before us, and for all peoples now.” Mr. Roberson introduces 8th grade students to quality research methods and the peer-review process, implementing a Socratic seminar method using open-ended questions to cultivate a love of history through making personal connections to the historical materials.

Florida History Day (FHD) is excited to announce its virtual 2021 Florida History Day State Contest.

Florida History Day, in consultation with NHD, has developed templates and procedures for a virtual contest so the History Day projects of Florida students can be evaluated in an online environment. FHD is dedicated to providing the same quality program as in previous years and will maintain high standards for the judging of all competing entries. FHD procedures for the virtual contest will be provided to each participating county program.

On November 20, 2020, NHD announced that the national competition in June will be conducted virtually. The winning entries from the FHD contest will be announced on May 4, 2021, and those student entries will advance to represent Florida at the virtual National History Day contest.

Three of our Florida History Day (FHD) teachers were selected to participate in the inaugural Inspiring Student Research webinar series, a professional development workshop hosted by National History Day (NHD) and the Library of Congress.

Mark Dineen of Christian Academy, Rachelle Strang of NeoCity Academy, and Carol LaVallee of Pine View School all took part in the new course which focuses on using online Library of Congress primary and secondary sources to develop and support student research skills. For several months, the teachers work with their peers around the country and NHD staff to build knowledge for teaching with primary sources from the Library of Congress.

The 58 teachers selected represent 40 of National History Day’s affiliates across the country and around the world. The NHD network of 58 affiliates includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and international school programs in China, South Asia, and South Korea.

The Florida History Day staff sincerely thanks these teachers for their continued service to FHD students as they bring new teaching methods, coaching approaches, and modeled diligence to the contest each year. Bravo!
