Our hearts are heavy with the news of Steve Uhlfelder’s passing. Steve was a longtime supporter of the Challenger Learning Center and served as a member of our Board of Directors for many years. While he’s widely known for being one of the most respected and accomplished attorneys in modern Florida history, his life was dedicated to serving his community.
Mentoring youth was his primary passion as he worked with multiple governors to introduce and expand a mentoring initiative that recruited volunteers statewide to mentor at-risk children. We are privileged to have been part of his life and will continue to honor his legacy by supporting the youth in our community. 💙

Dr. George Carruthers was an engineer and astrophysicist at the Naval Research Laboratory, where he led the Ultraviolet Measurement Group in the Space Sciences Division. #
🎓 Carruthers earned his bachelor's degree in physics in 1961, his master's in nuclear engineering in 1962, and his Ph.D. in aeronautical and astronautical engineering in 1964.
⚛️ In 1969, Carruthers was awarded a patent for his Image Converter for Detecting Electromagnetic Radiation Especially in Short Wave Lengths.
🚀 During a 1970 rocket flight, Carruthers's UV telescope and image converter provided the first proof of the existence of molecular hydrogen in interstellar space.
🌑 Carruthers’ invention was again used during the first lunar walk of the Apollo 16 mission. For the first time, scientists were able to examine the Earth's atmosphere for concentrations of pollutants, and see UV images of more than 550 stars, nebulae and galaxies.

Dr. Gladys West is a hidden trailblazer and one of the most important mathematicians to contribute to the advancement of space exploration.
🎓 As valedictorian of her high-school class, Gladys received a full scholarship to Virginia State College and earned a degree in mathematics in 1952. She went on to receive a master’s degree in mathematics in 1955.
🎖️ In 1956 Gladys was hired as a mathematician by the U.S. Naval Proving Ground as only their fourth Black employee.
🌊 In 1978 West was named project manager of Seasat, the first satellite to track the oceans, which helped her see how tidal forces affect the shape of the Earth.
🌎 As part of the Seasat team, she re-configured an IBM computer to calculate the geometric size and shape of the Earth much more efficiently. She was the first person to take all of the information we have on the Earth’s movement and the forces that act upon the Earth and input them into a computer to create a precise mathematical model of our planet.
📍 Though it might have seemed small at the time, Dr. West’s computer program paved the way for pinpointing a person’s location on the Earth through satellite tracking and laid the foundations for GPS technology.
🎓 After recovering from a stroke, she received a Ph.D. in public administration and policy affairs from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 2000 at age 70.

We’re continuing our celebration of Black pioneers that contributed to the advancement of space exploration by spotlighting Ted Brown, the artist of the space age. Ted Brown worked as a contract artist for the Space Shuttle Program where he illustrated impressive recreations of everything from Buck Roger imaginings of Philip Bono to Gemini and Apollo. His art is the history of space exploration.
🛰️ In 1962, Ted began working as a graphic artist for McDonnell Douglas. His entire career was spent in the aerospace industry, working for McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell Industries, and Boeing.
🚀 One of his last appointments in his contract with NASA was to work on the Space Shuttle Program, painting the iconic logos and insignia on the Atlantis and Endeavor orbiters.
🌟 In 1980, Ted led a team that created a mural entitled Space Products. Unveiled to the public at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, it was later moved to the Launch Control Center.
🎨 In addition to his aerospace work, Ted was also a portrait and abstract painter.

We're continuing our celebration of by honoring the achievements of NASA Astronaut Ronald McNair. McNair was a recognized expert in the fields of chemical and high-pressure lasers, a 6th degree black belt in karate, and an accomplished saxophonist. On January 28, 1986, he was one of the seven crew members killed when the Challenger shockingly exploded 73 seconds after liftoff.
Ronald McNair is held especially close to our hearts as the Challenger Center organization was created to be a living memorial to the Challenger 51-L Crew.
🎓 After graduating as valedictorian of Carver High School, McNair initially considering majoring in music. He eventually came back around to his love for science and graduated magna cm laude in 1971 with a B.S. in physics.
🌟 McNair went on to earn a PhD in Physics from MIT in 1976, the same year that he won the AAU Karate gold medal.
🚀 In 1978, McNair was selected as an astronaut candidate for NASA where he became the second African American to reach space, serving as a mission specialist on the STS-41B mission of the space shuttle Challenger.
