Do you know a student between the ages of 14-17 who would be the perfect fit for Stillwater Medical's Youth Volunteer Program? This is an amazing, resume-worthy opportunity...
This eight-week program provides the opportunity for youth volunteers to learn about having compassion for others while gaining experience supporting patients, families, and staff in a hospital setting. In addition to the hospital setting, volunteers can also gain experience in the retail business by volunteering in the gift shop or snack bar.
As a volunteer, you won't be doing any actual medical procedures or advising patients. You'll simply be there to help with more basic tasks (such as delivering things and helping visitors and patients find their way around the hospital).
The 2023 session will begin on June 5th and end on July 28th. Applications are now being accepted.

Know a student interested in a healthcare career?
Applications for Stillwater Medical Foundation’s High School Fellowship Program will open on Wednesday, March 1st. This year’s recipients will be the 40th class to complete the six-week program.
Students may apply from the summer before their junior year of high school to the summer before their freshman year of college. Students must also be 16 years of age by June 1st.
During the program, the fellows shadow physicians, nurses and allied health professionals at Stillwater Medical Center and area clinics. They also observe surgeries, births, and emergency treatment at SMC.
2022 fellow, Ceyda Kara, described, “The doctors I met all told me that they were in this field for the patients. That without the love they held for them, they wouldn’t bother doing hours of paperwork even after their shift was over. Yes, it is the love for science and medicine that made them doctors, but it was their love and passion for humanity that made them into great ones.”
The program includes field trips to both of Oklahoma’s medical schools as well as specialized centers like Dean McGee Eye Institute, the Oklahoma Blood Institute, Integris’ Paul Silverstein Burn & Wound Care Unit, and the Oklahoma Cancer Specialists and Research Institute. Students have also visited Behavioral Sciences at OUHSC and the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy.
The High School Fellowship program was created by the late Dr. Orville Rippy. It was his dream to help introduce young adults to the wide variety of careers in healthcare. Upon his retirement in 1983, he asked friends and family to establish the Rippy Fellowship.
In the mid 90’s, Dr. Robert Breedlove started an endowment for the Breedlove Fellowship after several years of having Rippy Fellows shadowing in his office. At the same time, Dr. Glen Henry, the 1987 Rippy Fellow, and his mother, Glenna Franklin Cramer, started the Franklin Fellowship in memory of Bill Franklin.
In 2019, retired nurse and hospital volunteer, Sue McMillan, created an endowment for the McMillan Fellowship, making a total of four student experiences each summer.
Students are encouraged to apply starting on March 1 by visiting https://smc-foundation.org/education/high-school-fellowships/

"1 year ago I got a once-in-a-lifetime experience to watch the Braves play in a World Series in Houston, Texas. 1 year later I got called back to San Antonio, Texas where my stem cells matched with a patient. has made the process a great experience and doing life-saving actions. I highly encourage everyone to sign up for the registry! I did a simple swab back in college and matched up 5 years later. I hope my stem cells treat their new home as well as they have treated me and work miracles for the recipient." -Steve

Weston relapsed and needed a second transplant. 💙💚
"Bone marrow transplant number two. We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. We found out Weston had relapsed again back in August of last year. Leukemia had infiltrated both of his feet and there were some cells present in his spinal fluid. While it’s been an intense and difficult last six months, we’ve also experienced many moments of joy, somewhat unexpectedly. Day by day, there are moments of stillness and beauty, and always so much to be grateful for. Weston has experienced unimaginable adversity with grace and an inner-strength that’s unbelievable. Weston is the most amazing man, and I feel so blessed to be his partner. Thank you to the German man who donated his bone marrow, and is anonymous for now. Weston is doing so well and I feel so many good things are coming his way. 🥰"
