Jim’s workshops are wonderful- in the magical Hocking Hills!

I have several openings for the May 22-24 Photography Workshop in Hocking Hills, Ohio. I also have a one-day option for those who wish to attend on Monday May 23rd. The price to attend on Monday only is $100 per person.

Conditions are shaping-up to be another spectacular spring in Ohio's most scenic state park. Wildflowers, waterfalls, and amazing light in the forest and on the trails through the sandstone gorges of the Appalachian foothills of Southeaster Ohio!

I can’t believe it’s Thursday already, can you? We have a gallery and studio full of all kinds of sunflower art that will be hung at the PAC tomorrow. Let me just say, there are some incredibly talented teens out there. This photograph, “Bask,” is by Kara Dykes of Middletown and is printed on acrylic- it is so cool! It will be available in the silent auction this weekend.

Happy Wednesday! We will be open a little later today as we have more pieces coming for the show this weekend. Last night I picked up the wonderful work from students at Middletown Arts Center. Check out this unique little piece made with felted wool by the multi-talented Linda Wallace. It is so charming and whimsical- I think it would be perfect in a nursery, half bath, or laundry room!

Life & Work with Shawna Hatton - Voyage Ohio Magazine Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawna Hatton. Hi Shawna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers? I have been an artist all my life and an […]

Happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend enjoying the beautiful weather. Studio Fun happened in and out of the studio last week. In the studio, everything is coming up sunflowers as we prepare for the big art show/fundraiser next weekend. The city even came in to film a segment on it! In the kids classes, they are learning about perspective and creating a piece inspired by Van Gogh’s bedroom. We also welcomed ladies for some watercolor cards, and girls night out featuring the wonderful guest artist, Jo Anne Vincent.

Out of the studio, I presented an award for the Art and Soul show downtown. It is such an inspiring and uplifting event! During the jury process, we do not know the names of artists, so I was so excited to see that one of my newer private class students won second place! Also we framed and delivered a commission piece of Big Sur, which was very fun to see it in its forever home.

Wishing you a wonderful week. I hope to see you at the art show this Sunday, 5-7! All proceeds go to help the children of Ukraine.

Art & Soul 2022: it is such an incredibly uplifting and inspiring event that I love to be a part of. The artwork will be up at the Dayton Metro library through the end of the month, and the pieces are also available through their page.

My class just missed a special visitor from Springboro Area Historical Society! Perhaps he will make a special appearance at our art show/fundraiser on May 1. We aren’t clowning around though- it will be a wonderful event for the whole family!

I love creating something special for a clients home. I got to know this sweet family through mom/daughter classes when I first opened the studio and they have become dear friends. Big Sur holds a special place in their hearts and they wanted something to capture the feeling of being there, especially on the gray Ohio days. It is so satisfying to see it beautifully framed (thank you Kyle!) and hanging in it’s intended place. Thank you Sarah and Jon for trusting me to create something special for your beautiful new home!

You're Invited! | Art & Soul 2022

If you are looking for inspiration or a cool piece of art, check out the Art & Soul Exhibit. Today is the awards ceremony at the Dayton Metro Library. I will be closing early, as I have the honor of presenting an award.

Happy Friday! From the simple artistic expressions of children, to the work of trained professionals, the studio is starting to fill with beautiful sunflowers. Our hearts are with the people of Ukraine. One week from today we will be hanging all the pieces at the Performing Arts Center and we are so excited! Please share the event and fundraising link with your friends and family. Of course, we hope to see you on May 1!

Grab your girlfriends and your 80s attire and come downtown for the first Girl’s Night Out of the season! Our hours are extended today and we will have the incredibly talented Jo Anne Vincent in the studio with lots of HANDMADE beautiful jewelry in time for Mother’s Day (or to treat yourself!). Jo Anne is delightful- you will absolutely love her and her unique artisan pieces!

Stop in and get a sneak peek at some of the work that will be in the fundraiser art show for the children of Ukraine next weekend.

In celebration of spring, all paintings and photographs will be 15% off- tonight only. It will be a totally turbular night for sure!

Thank you Springboro Star Press for the wonderful article!

Happy Wednesday! More sunflower pieces will be coming into the studio today, in between classes. Check out this cool capture by Jeff Brown! This and many other great pieces will be available in the silent auction on May 1.

Sunflowers for the Children of Ukraine

Jeff Brown, a very talented artist from Lebanon, OH, is generously donating a couple of pieces to raise money for A Child’s Hope Int’l. You may have seen his work at one of our gallery nights last year. This photograph will be available in the silent auction.

Fun fact: Jeff’s daughter Holly is taking painting classes at the studio and she’s working on a beautiful piece for the show. This will be the first time father and daughter have been in an art show together- I love it!

Jim Crotty’s beautiful image of Holes Creek Park Washington Township, will be one of the several works donated by artists for the silent auction portion of this event. So exciting!

Ukranians have a long, rich tradition decorating eggs this time of year. The eggs are called pysanky and they are beautiful pieces of folk art. They symbolize rebirth in both the pagan and Christian traditions. The artist uses a batik process (wax) to write and create designs on the eggs and then dips them in dyes. The writing and colors are very symbolic, and many reflect the region of the country where the artist is from.

I don’t know about you, but my family’s Easter eggs never quite turned out like this using a crayon and food coloring. Perhaps upgrading our tools to beeswax and a stylus would help. If I find one at Walmart I wonder if I could get my teens to decorate them with me today. I will let you know how that goes. 😉

Wishing you all a beautiful Easter Day full of much hope, love, and many blessings.

Wishing you all a wonderful start to the holiday weekend. I am bursting with excitement with the generous donations that have been coming through with our art show/fundraiser! Thank you to everyone who has partnered with us to help the children in Ukraine. If you would like more information, please reach out or keep an eye out over the next couple weeks for features on our artists. (📷 Shawna Hatton)

One of the many beautiful pieces we will have for sale on May 1. All sales support the children in Ukraine, through A Child’s Hope Int’l. Please help get the word out!

Who doesn’t love sea glass and baroque pearls?! I am SO excited Jo Anne will be bringing some beautiful new pieces to the gallery next Thursday! Plus, you will absolutely love her. Tell your hubby, book the sitter, grab your friends- but you do NOT want to miss the first Girl’s Night Out of the season!

Happy Monday! We had lots of fun in the studio last week. Some of the kids created pop-up mixed media paintings inspired by Matisse. Another class learned about the impasto technique and Van Gogh. Of course, these days we are all about sunflowers and getting ready for the big fundraising event at the end of this month. Thank you to all who have already donated! For more information, click on the link pinned at the top of our page.

The teens learned about drawing facial structure, and the painters in the private classes have made exciting progress! Wishing you a wonderful and creative week!

Happy Saturday! The studio will be hopping with happy kids creating today- yay!

Happy Friday! I am so excited, things are coming together for our fundraiser in a few weeks. I am grateful for everyone who has offered to help so far! Pictured is a sunflower from one of the teens at the studio. The work in the show will be a combination of professional artists and students from the studio, SHS, FHS, and MAC! All proceeds will go to A Child’s Hope Int’l to help the children in Ukraine. If you would like to be involved or have any questions, please reach out!

A Little About Me...

I’ve been an artist my whole life, but didn’t really understand what that meant until after my kids were born. You see, even though I went to college for fine arts, then worked in graphic design for years, it wasn’t until I stopped creating (because I was busy with young children) that I realized I was denying part of who I am. So I happily started creating again, with photography, drawing and painting. I truly believe we are all designed to create in some way. Art is a healthy outlet that is so good for the soul!

I’ve been an educator for almost 20 years, first with natural childbirth classes, homeschooling, then in recent years, at the Dayton Art Institute, Middletown Arts Center, and private lessons. I love people of all ages and I aim to meet my students where they’re at in their artistic journey. My goal is for learning to be a fun discovery!

The arts bring communities together in such a beautiful way and I am honored to be part of the Springboro Arts Council as well as ARTfest on Main. I am looking forward to meeting you and creating with you soon!
