Here's another great title from Ms. Austin, who's written a touching and sentimental piece dedicated to those people effected by the disasters around the world recently. It is (obviously) in 3/4 time and in the key of D Major. The left hand will remind you of Erik Satie's Gymnopedie, and the piece has a great melody that switches from flowing and relaxed to almost dramatic in the chordal sections towards the middle and end. This is definitely a waltz to be remembered!

Written in the key of E minor and in 4/4 time, this piece has a wistful, lyrical melody that provides students practice in "singing out" the right hand melodic line. The left hand consists of a broken chord accompaniment creating an eerie, nostalgic mood. Students will love portraying a Parisian atmosphere.

Passacaglia by Bear McCreary

"Passacaglia" from Battlestar Galactica by Bear McCreary
This is an excerpt from one of the songs from the TV series Battlestar Galactica.
It has a hauntingly beautiful left hand melody throughout most of the song, and although originally for strings, it translates very well to the piano, as long as the right hand does not overpower the melody. There are some tough stretches, and it's a challenge to keep the focus on the melody at times, but any fan of the series will enjoy playing through the pieces in this book.

This book contains selections from the series re-written by the original composer for piano solo, including some easy piano arrangements, and a certain piano duet from towards the end of the series.

'Twilight Tarantella' by Glenda Austin

Twilight Tarantella is a later elementary title in a minor and (of course) 6/8 time which, unlike most tarantellas, is not to be played at top speed. It should in fact be played, according to the composer, 'Stealth-like'.

The song jumps all over the keyboard, from 4 ledger lines above the treble, to the very lowest 'A' on the keyboard. The varying dynamics make the music dramatic and make you pay attention to the details. The left hand stays staccato through most of the piece, there are a few instances of pedal use, and a climactic ending that builds in speed and volume.

An intermediate solo from Alfred's Signature Series, this title has a very gentle opening and closing passage, with a wonderful flowing main theme and pedal runs throughout the entire piece. The left hand changes from chords to arpeggio runs and back again, and a keychange in the middle really brings to life the sun coming up over the prairie.
