It took me a couple of years but after asking and asking PJ about carriers other than the ones I had ...I finally bought a kinderpack to carry both the girls. I remember meeting PJ and Eddy at a baby workshop shortly after Selena was born. Here she is 2 1/2 and whoa Saru is almost 5 but it works well for them both! Today, I’m by myself and she wants to be held...in the carrier she goes! I can carry on❤️ Back in Austin and will forever think of you all.
Gettin my rebel on.
Missing you!
Love this!
Hey y'all, Therese and I are currently struggling with my insurance company to get payment for our recent homebirth with midwife (CNM) and doula. Have any of you gone through this process recently, especially with BCBSTX? I requested and got an in network exemption prior to the birth, but now they're disallowing parts of the claim (midwives don't care for babies, and their supplies aren't covered, as everyone knows) and severely underpaying other parts of the claim. The kicker to me is that beween midwife and doula the total barely scratches 8k. So I plan to appeal based on 1. homebirth midwife care is safe and effective 2. same for doula care 3. cost of midwife and doula is reasonable compared to other homebirth providers in the area with comparable qualifications and 4. cost of an uncomplicated, vaginal delivery in an in-network hospital in the area would have been significantly (probably multiples) higher. Can anyone help with references to studies validating homebirth midwife and doula care, and also how to go about establishing cost comparisons? Especially for hospitals, my understanding is that getting cost estimates is a bit like pulling teeth. Thanks for your help!
We had such a wonderful time tonight, and it’s apparent the kids did too!!! Thank you so much for this opportunity to get out and have adult conversation Kathleen, Joli and PJ! The girls were so awesome with the kiddos too, I know it was a great time when they’re happy when I get there and pass out before we get to I-45!! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!! I needed this so much, we all did! Love this tribe!! 😘😘😘
Looking for a recommended full time Nanny. Only needed 4 to 6 weeks in Houston. Thanks!
Hey lovelies. Anyone you know in need of tiny baby clothes (preemie-3-6 month)? I'm going through stuff Olive has outgrown and am having all the feels. It would help knowing they're going to a good home... (Also have some misc bottles and a Medela pump that I could ship your way...)
Will anyone be in the office today for donations?
Have a friend asking where she can donate a breast pump for Harvey victim- any ideas?
Great 1 year anniversary party! Congrats Kathleen Wilson and Joli Ammons! We love you! Here's to many more!!
Had great time celebrating the anniversary with Kathleen Wilson and Joli Ammons today. Talented face paint artist. Blessed to know these women and to attend births with them!

Child birth education for the woman in charge! Unlike James Dean, we are Rebels WITH A CAUSE! We aren’t here to ruffle feathers or put on a show.

We are here to remind you that you are in control of your healthcare. To improve the establishment by putting the reins back into your hands! You don’t have to choose between the red pill and the blue pill. You can choose the green pill, or even no pill! By showing up here today, you are saying that no one but you controls your body, your baby, or your birth. Not your Mom, not your Aunt Cindy, and not even your Doctor. Take back your body! Own your birth! Be your own advocate! Get in touch with who you are and what you want! Have your baby your way! After years of being doulas and teaching from all kinds of different philosophies, but never fully connecting with any one method, we knew…we had to find a new way. We love the idea of so many different techniques, but none seemed comprehensive enough. There always seemed to be some pivotal part that needed filling in. The biggest missing piece was that none of these programs acknowledged the other. Each one was peddling the next big cure to all of your labor woes. We have found, that finding real birth satisfaction and empowerment comes from having plenty of different tools at your disposal. When one thing doesn’t hold up under the pressure of the real deal, you shouldn’t be left floating down sh*t creek without a backup paddle! When women and their partners own their birth, they have the power to change the game when the situation calls for it! Pregnancy is not the experience. It is the beginning of the experience. Pregnancy is the beginning of a long journey into parenthood. Labor is a time of learning. As the birthing woman you are learning endurance, patience, tolerance, and acceptance. You are learning to put your baby before yourself and it is a hard lesson. As a partner you are learning to help someone who is struggling. You are learning to witness pain and you are learning what it feels like to be helpless. You are both learning surrender. This is what it means to become parents. These are the first steps into a lifetime of giving, grieving, and rejoicing. A positive birthing experience is different for everyone. For some people it means an un-medicated vaginal delivery in a field of daisies. For other women it means a planned surgical birth in a hospital. Neither of these choices is wrong or better than the other. They both have merits. Both of these women are mothers and their choices are valid and should be respected by her peers and family. The goal is to learn how to have the most empowering and positive version of your personal birth story. As Americans we are used to giving up our healthcare decisions to people who know better than us. People who have more education. People with power. Obstetrics is one of the few times a woman is admitted to the hospital, watched and treated as if a catastrophe may happen any moment, even though she is completely healthy. Here in the United States our national surgical birth rate is a staggering 32.8% according to the CDC. That means one in three women will not deliver vaginally in the United States. The World Health Organization recommends cesarean rates be less than 15%. One way to bring your personal risks down for unwanted intervention is to take back your birth. You have to empower yourself with knowledge, but not just book learning here, folks. You need to know yourself. You need to understand the hardship that is childbirth: the emotional, the physical and the abstract. You need to know and understand your fears and your strengths. You need to speak the language – which might as well be Latin to most families. You need to pack your tool bag with an arsenal – maybe you will use one tool, but have every tool: relaxation techniques, hypnosis, music, aromatherapy, acupressure, rebozo techniques, positioning techniques, how to use the hospital bed or squat bar, water therapy, a birthing stool, a birth ball, massage... We could go on. Lastly, and most importantly, you have to learn to say: No, thank you! Rebel Birth was created by Kathleen Wilson and Joli Ammons – Doulas!

Mission: To teach pregnant women and their support teams how to own their birth by making informed decisions about their care. Not only when it comes to the system, but also choosing the tools that will work for the woman and for her family.

Look what Joli did for Mother's Day, Y'all! The Painted Doula

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!! (Full story on The Painted Doula Facebook post) ... I snapped this picture of her as she was getting herself onto the stretcher because I just thought it was so POWERFUL, seeing her walk herself out with her baby in her arms, still attached to the placenta that was still inside her body, blood and pieces of the amniotic sac on her legs, while her husband, the paramedics and I just stood by and showed reverence and respect for the goddess before us. #mothersday #badassbirther #VBAC #accidentalhomebirth #beautiful #raw #real #thepainteddoula #rebelbirth #houstondoula #doulaweekend #htxdoula #postedbyjoli @lnewchurch

The ultimate honor for a birth worker on Mother’s Day is to be a part of another mother’s birth story. Liz and I have been talking every day since Wednesday. She has had contractions every night that were strong enough to disrupt her sleep but they would slow down or go away each morning. Each day we checked in first thing in the morning, and each day I thought for sure I would hear from her sometime later that day. Each night I was surprised to still be at home waiting for the call. Yesterday I went and visited with her and we talked about how a watched pot never boils and made a plan to ignore anything that didn’t make her vocalize. I felt her belly to see what position baby boy was in and we did some work to help him to be in the most optimal position. We also talked about emotional release techniques and how the stress of the times and the stress of waiting for labor may be blocking her from going into active labor. Finally, this morning she texted me around 6:50am that she had been having back labor contractions all night long. We chatted around 7:30 and she was going to see what happened when she got up and moving. Then right around 9:00 she called and said she was moaning a little through them and thought maybe I should head her way. When I got to the house around 10:30 she and her husband Steve and their sweet little boy Peter were in the playroom hanging out. Whenever she had a contraction she would lean forward on her elbows and knees and I started giving her some counter pressure. She seemed like she was in nice active labor, contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart and around a minute long but usually less than a minute (the goal for most people by the end of labor is 2-3 minutes apart and 90 seconds long.) Liz started telling me about her emotional release yesterday. She had realized that she was sad that Peter wouldn’t be her only baby anymore and that she was scared that the new baby would change her relationship with him. He was playing with blocks right in front of her and she was helping him and holding his hand during surges. Then a big one came and she roared really big! Peter reached out and put his little hand on his momma’s back like mine was and looked into my eyes like “look I can do that too!” After the surge, Liz said she thought her water had broken. We decided to go to the restroom and see what we could see. Everything moved so fast from there! She had one contraction that took her to her knees on the way to the bathroom. She began to panic, but got control really fast. We made it to the bathroom and I gave her some pH paper to make sure there was amniotic fluid (there was). After about 2 contractions we decided to go to the hospital. On the next contraction she went to her knees again and leaned over the toilet. This time I could see that her labia were parting with the contractions and that she was pushing!! I told her she should put a finger in and feel if the baby was there...she did...AND HE WAS!!!!!! I dialed 911 and handed the phone to Steve and said “we’re not going to make it to the hospital! Tell them we need an ambulance RIGHT NOW!” The ambulance got there so fast and then we all just waited for her to ease him out. She did so amazing. He wanted to come so fast and she would start to panic but then she would slow down and listen to me telling her to do no more or less than her body was doing on its own. She gently eased him into the world in about 4 pushes and then had him in her arms!!! She bulb suctioned him herself and got him crying and onto the breast. A few minutes later we helped her up and walked her out to the stretcher waiting out front so they could ride to the hospital. Momma and baby are healthy as can be and so excited about their badass birth story. I’m so proud of her and so glad I got to spend Mother’s Day this way. #mothersday #badassbirther #VBAC #accidentalhomebirth #beautiful #raw #real #thepainteddoula #rebelbirth #houstondoula #doulaweekend #htxdoula
