"I'll have a class of 50 students and ask the question, 'How many are in full-time ministry?' I'd have 2-3 hands go up, the pastors... And then I ask the question, 'How many are believers?' and all the hands go up. And then I ask the question again, 'How many are in full-time ministry?' then everybody gets it." Sr. Chaplain Ken Schlenker, Director & Professor, School of Chaplaincy

Grace School of Theology believes that our ministry can be wherever and whenever God places us. This is why we make it accessible for any believer to receive quality training in becoming equipped Ambassadors for the Kingdom of God in times of crises.

CAREForce

On February 8, 2020, CAREForce provided two suicide awareness courses (AFSP Talk Saves Lives and LivingWorks suicideTALK) to be distributed throughout the Montgomery County Behavioral Health and Suicide Prevention (BHSP) Task Force to educate and assist in removing the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and suicide.

These classes were hosted at Grace School of Theology in The Woodlands, TX with the Honorable Judge Wayne Mack, Precinct One, presenting Talk Saves Lives and Sr. Chaplain Ken Schlenker, Founder of CAREForce and Assistant Professor and Director of Chaplain Programs at Grace School of Theology.

Talk Saves Lives is a community-based presentation created by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide. Attendees will learn the risk and warning signs of suicide, and how together, we can help prevent it. The Talk Saves Lives presentation is open to the community.

suicideTALK is a 90-minute exploration of suicide awareness which provides ideas for getting involved in creating a suicide-safer community through open and direct talk about suicide.

suicideTALK invites all participants—regardless of prior training or experience—to become more aware of suicide prevention opportunities in their community. Dealing openly with the stigma around suicide, this exploration focuses upon the question "Should we talk about suicide?" By looking at this question in a number of different ways, session members can discover some of the beliefs and ideas about suicide in their communities—and in themselves. suicideTALK participants learn…

-- How suicide is a serious community health problem that is often misunderstood

-- How personal and community beliefs about suicide affect suicide stigma and safety

-- How the steps taught in LivingWorks’ safeTALK program can be used to help prevent suicide

-- How to get involved in life protection, preservation, and promotion activities in the community

[02/11/20]   From one of my students. We all need to be aware of those around us and take the time to be in relationship with them. It is NOT about us. It is about them. Learn to become "water to other peoples shoreline." Listen with respect and humility and let them share with you their pain and pressures of life. This is a very loving thing to do. Be an ambassador and model this to others.......

"As I have mentioned, I have been praying that the Lord would grant me a sensitivity to hurting people around me and the boldness to enter into the uncomfortable conversations surrounding mental health, depression and suicide. Just this last week as my wife and I visited with a recently retired couple that we had never met previously; the subject of my classes came up. As I began to talk about what I was learning and some of my growing passions in this area the lady opened up and wanted to share about the recent suicide of her best friends’ husband, a retired fireman. I believe it was very therapeutic for her to share her story, the struggles of this family, and the impact on the fire department and the greater community. The information, the discussion, the reading, has all contributed to, not only a greater awareness of this epidemic, but a greater confidence to engage in these conversations and hopefully over life-giving words. It is interesting to note that when the elderly go to see their medical health professionals that they are not being helped in the area of mental health. At this age, often the signs are not diagnosed because they are assumed to be normal for the elderly and so once again, they are missed, dismissed and avoided. Among the elderly, be aware of the deadly clusters, depression, increased physical illness and social isolation. Isolation is a significant warning sign in every age demographic, career, LEO’s First Responders, Military, etc. Suicide grows in isolation and darkness."
