Ridgemont Academy

Mission: The mission at Ridgemont Academy is to embrace the pursuit of excellence both within and outside our school. We encourage critical thinking and emphasize the learning process by giving ownership to the student and their family. You will not have to advocate to take certain classes, explore opportunities or create an unconventional path. Students chose the opportunities that align with their educational path.

Happy Mother's Day!

Be sure to stop by tomorrow! Our garage sale benefit for the Australian wildfires opens at 10am Saturday 2/22. This is just a sample of what our students have collected for it!

Our students had a special guest stop by to deliver a Valentine treat this morning!

Preparing for an exciting week with our students. Last week saw them participating in a chemistry lab, exploring Guatemala through cooking, and beautifying our community.

Making Powerful Educational Choices for our Children

"What if a successful education now needs to ensure our children have their developmental needs met; are seen, known, and accepted for everything they are; can cultivate deep and authentic relationships with their teachers and peers; and develop a strong sense of identity by being strongly connected to their community? What if learning requires them to have their passions, strengths, and interests drive experiences that nurture the wide range of skills, talents, and cognitive abilities needed to build, perform, or master a craft—and to have multiple ways to both learn and demonstrate comprehension? What if success requires them to have opportunities to fail and fail again without fearing they are ruining their chances of success in life?"https://community.today.com/parentingteam/post/making-powerful-educational-choices-for-our-children

community.today.com Like many parents, I constantly find myself wondering if I’m making the right educational choices for my children, a challenge that is particularly relevant as National School Choice Week approaches....

In 2019, more Americans went to the library than to the movies. Yes, really.

We love the library! Barbara Bush Library gives free SAT and ACT mock tests with a score report several times a year. https://lithub.com/in-2019-more-americans-went-to-the-library-than-to-the-movies-yes-really/

Frustrated with top 10% rule, Houston-area schools stop ranking some students

houstonchronicle.com Friendswood, Katy and Fort Bend ISD officials say ranking every student in accordance with the state’s top-10-percent law causes unnecessary stress.

This semester has seen our students dive right in to new classes and opportunities - from world geography through cooking to sewing and learning about static electricity.

What Will Teens and Young Adults Be Like in 2020?

Here is an article that was written in 2012 about what teens and young adults will be like in 2020, specifically regarding the effects of technology on their lives. It is interesting to read the predictions. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/tech-support/201203/what-will-teens-and-young-adults-be-in-2020

We have gathered our school plants to celebrate National Houseplant Day. You can't plant flowers if you haven't botany!

From crazy soap gelatin blobs to beautifully painted frames, our students are always creating something on campus.

Happy holidays from all of us to you!

Happy Halloween!

What a fantastic few weeks! Thank you to Feign Boutique for hosting an outstanding fashion opportunity for our students to learn more about the fashion industry. Thank you also, Liquid Bean Cafe for hosting our students and teaching them about being a barista! We also worked together to make a prop turkey for a student's community theater play, worked with dry ice, had our first pep rally for our ESports team, proved that D=M/V, made sugar snakes, and so much more!

"When a person feels seen, feels worthy, and feels they matter, they grow up to live an empowered life. It isn't gadgets, clothes, vacations, or even the best of educations that enable a child to feel good about themselves. The key to how they see themselves and feel about themselves lies in how we see them, how we feel about them - and this is reflected in the connections we experience with them."Dr. Shefali

[09/19/19]   Due to inclement weather, Ridgemont Academy will be closing. Gentry Street is impassable at this time. Please check in with the family page or call the school phone line if you have any concerns.

Another busy week at Ridgemont Academy. S'mores and ghost stories, show and tell, tiny gardens, taco Tuesday party, pottery, engineering challenges and a field trip to Barbara Bush library with a picnic were some of the highlights.

We just finished our 3rd week back to school. We have been busy building birdhouses, setting up our fish tank, learning about carnivorous plants, botany, aquatics, chemistry, and tons of games/art.

The Flexibility of Homeschooling and the Benefits of Community

Stay in charge of your student’s jr. high and high school path with the added benefit of having access to group activities and community. With no attendance requirements, no assigned start times, and student-driven opportunities, clubs, and classes you can choose what makes your path complete and opt out of what doesn't.

Before each school year, or upon admission, the family and school staff, acting as a resource will develop a course plan. With so many options available combined with individual interests and talents every student will have a uniquely personalized course plan.

Each semester students will create a credit plan through the school portal that includes the courses and topics covered in that course that they plan to take. Each week, after school starts, students will make weekly goals and communicate their progress to their parents through the school portal. This allows for Independence with accountability. If a student starts getting behind in their coursework parents can help their student get back on track.
