Being busy does not always translate to being effective. The seductive thing about checking items off your to-do list is that it feels productive; however, if the other items do not move you toward your end goal, does it matter? A focusing question is a bridge between just doing something and doing something for a specific purpose, something that actually moves you closer to where you want to be. A simple way to get started is to ask yourself “What’s the one thing that by doing such will make everything else easier or unnecessary?”

The focusing question is a technique that can help you prioritize tasks and identify the most important actions to take. It can be useful when you have a lot of things on your plate and need to figure out the best way to spend your time and energy. By asking yourself this question, you can zero in on the one thing that will have the biggest impact on your dreams, visions, goals, or objectives. This can help you make progress more efficiently and effectively.

The never-ending to-do list is something that most people know all too well. There are days when you feel like a chicken with your head cut off trying to do too many things and coming up short. Your customers are calling, you have a million emails in your inbox, and everyone is on top of you for this report and that spreadsheet, plus the pressure of making payroll. It's as though there aren't enough hours in the day!

In order to focus on just the most crucial part of your agenda, try using the focusing question when creating tasks for future days so they are in line with your goals and vision:

“What is the one thing that by doing such will make everything else easier or unnecessary?”

Having a word of the year isn’t about checking something off your to-do list. It’s about creating a personal mantra to help guide your daily actions, becoming a better version of yourself in the process. Here are some easy steps to help you choose your word of the year for 2023:

Step 1: I want you to reflect on the past year, then ask yourself: What do I want more of in my life?

Step 2: VISUALIZE
Visualize what the perfect day would look and feel like, and how you want to feel at work. Find a quiet place to sit and meditate, do some breathing exercises, or just take a few moments to be still. Then ask yourself one question — what word do I want to focus on in 2023?

Step 3: Write down a list of words that come to mind. Don't overthink this--just write.

Step 4: Review your list, and circle or highlight three words. Chances are you’ll see a theme going on between the words you wrote down. Do any of the words jump out at you? At the same time, I think finding your word can also bring peace and empowerment.

NO. 3 - Give yourself a phone-free start to your day. It is more difficult to be productive and creative when you are distracted by news, texts, and alerts. Instead, enjoy a cup of coffee, read a book, pray or meditate, or fix a healthy breakfast. You will have a better day when you start your morning on the right foot.

There are 3 simple things we can do to improve our well-being during this time of year.

No. 1 - Turn off notifications on your phone. The constant alerts can create anxiety and even fear about what the call or text might be about. When you turn off distractions, you can focus on completing the task at hand.

The brain releases a small amount of dopamine each time we hear an alert, which motivates us to check our phones. However, the dopamine boost is temporary and leads to a letdown. Here is a tricky question for you: does success equal happiness? Most people would say yes, and they are not entirely wrong. However, this does not mean that success and happiness are mutually exclusive.

Neuroscientists and positive psychologists have found that happiness is a key driver of success, with two decades of research proving this theory. One reason is that positive feelings trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, which enhance motor control, motivation, memory and problem-solving abilities. So positive thinking really can make you more successful.

Here is 1 of 3 practices to put happiness first in your pursuit of success.

Be mindful

A Harvard study showed that we spend about 47% of our waking hours thinking about what isn’t going on. And this typically makes us unhappy. The solution is to focus on whatever we are doing and the experience we are having at this very moment. In other words, to develop the skill of mindfulness.

Find ways to validate your existence every day, and remember that you deserve as much love as you give to others. Step 1: Be Present - Stop thinking about things that haven't happened yet, could happen, or would have happened. It's time to start living in the present and stop wondering what can go wrong, will go wrong, or has gone wrong. It's proven that you're stressing yourself out and causing unnecessary worry when you keep asking these questions. At the end of the day there is nothing you can do to change anything so why worry about it?
