CREDIT THROUGH TESTING PROGRAM TO BE LAUNCHED THIS SPRING On April 4th or 5th, high school students who speak Tamil will have the opportunity to pilot the new LCPS Credit Through Testing program at the LCPS Administration Building. High school students with the ability to comprehend and communicate in Tamil will be assessed for language proficiency using the Credit-By-Exam. Credit Through Testing measures students’ heritage or native language proficiency in order to award two high school world language credits and satisfy the intermediate-mid language proficiency required to earn the Seal of Biliteracy. Students interested in receiving credit and earning the Seal of Biliteracy by taking the Tamil language proficiency test should at least be at the Intermediate Mid-level and be able to: · start, maintain, and end a conversation on a variety of familiar topics. · express daily activities and personal preferences. · use language to handle tasks related to personal needs. · exchange information about subjects of special interest to them. · read and write several cohesive paragraphs on topics relating to themselves and others. Registration for the exam will be required. There are two ways to register for this pilot: 1. Submit your name to your school Counselor to register for the credit exam. 2. Send an email requesting to take the exam to School Counselor . Please include the student’s full name, student identification number, high school and email address where notifications should be sent. Registration will open at 8:00 a.m. on March 8, 2017 and close at 5:00 p.m. on March 29, 2017. Please register for one of testing days. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Loudoun County has introduced Tamil as the first foreign language for Bi-literacy seal, using credit-by-exam.
(LCPS Bi-literacy Seal for Tamil)
The implementation of this program is the greatest accomplishment for Virginia Tamil School on behalf of entire Tamil community in Virginia. Virginia Tamil School has been instrumental in conjuring up the Bi-literacy Seal law for High School students of Virginia. Let us celebrate the occasion. Share the details with your friends and family across Tamil and Indian communities.
The pilot implementation of this program in Loudoun County was possible due to the tireless efforts of teachers and volunteers across our school for long four plus years. This tremendous achievement has been brought to fruition due to the key leadership of our Chairman, Mr.Gerald Joseph, President Mr.Gopi Durgaiyanaidu and Secretary Mr.Joseph Thangaraja. The efforts included long hours of preparing and presenting curriculum material to delegates, school board and to Language Chair.
Our heartfelt acknowledgements to Delegate David Ramadan, Senator Jennifer Wexton, LCPS Board representative Mr.Jeff Morse, Foreign language team with Sudha Mathew
and the current Cultural language Chair, current/past Principals of Virginia Tamil School, and all Tamil volunteers for facilitating credit-by-exam in Loudoun County.
We now await the first student to be awarded Bi-literacy seal for Tamil. Testing dates are April 4th-6th, 2017. If you have any further questions or you have someone who is planning to graduate in
Loudoun County this year, do reach out to us. We will be more than happy to share/guide you with information, so that interested children can get credits for proficiency in two languages (English & Tamil).

Count Down Year 3 and Year 4:
Virginia Tamil School worked with both parties to get the law passed in Virginia State Assembly to have Bi-literacy as reality in Virginia. This means kids learning the world languages like Tamil will get Seal equivalent of AP course in High School. In this bill Virginia Tamil School/Academy curriculum was included as sample curriculum. Kudos to all the teachers and Volunteers worked on this effort. Proud moment for a community organization
