INFANT FEEDING CLASS COMING THIS FALL! SIGN UP TODAY!
During a vaginal delivery, there are cases in which assistance is required. Usually, the two tools used by care providers are forceps and the vacuum. These tools are generally reserved for situations where it is in the best interest of birther or baby to get the baby out expeditiously. Some families welcome their babies via cesarean section, and we support them too! Did you know a doula can be there to support you? Whether it’s and expected situation or not, we can offer you advice to make the experience as positive as possible. Your doula can coach you through the whole process, from prep to going home in the postpartum period.

Did you know that pushing during labor can be done in many different positions? That’s RIGHT- it’s not always on your back, like in the movies! So you’re fully dilated; NOW WHAT? Well, it’s time for second stage labor to begin. This is the period of time that your baby starts to really descend down into the pelvis and where breathing techniques come into play, along with “pushing”.
As you go through second stage labor, your doula can guide you through different positions you can use to help things progress, so you can meet your baby! Want to know more? Ask your doula!!

As doulas and educators we help expectant parents explore their preferences and provide them places to find evidence-based information. Some families will weigh evidence stronger than their preferences, for others the word of their provider rises above anything else. This diagram is something we go over in our childbirth class, but really has an important place once we get into the labor and delivery room! Take an example of a seasoned, experienced OB who talked about the grey area of literature/research that informs a client's and baby's medical situation. This family placed an incredible trust in their provider and the provider's words. They had a wonderful discussion, with their doula by their side. Despite thinking the evidence may guide the birth, they relied on the team’s intuition and their own values. In the end, the family were happy to have experienced a beautiful, powerful vaginal birth.
This is shared decision making at it’s best! To learn more about shared decision making, and the many situations it can apply to during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, take one of our perinatal classes!

The most common pain relief option birthing people know about is an epidural. Some people use the epidural, while others don’t, and both sets of people can have really positive experiences. It’s important to understand what an epidural means, the benefits and the risks. Ask your provider and doula for more info!

Some birthing locations also offer nitrous oxide as a good pain relief option. It can certainly help take the edge off the pain, help you move around a bit, and takes immediate effect.
