Job Title: Authorization Coordinator (LPN): Full Time
Department: Patient Access Pre Service
This position is responsible for completing financial clearance for patients, including, insurance verification, benefits verification, clinical authorizations, referral management, financial counseling screenings and medical necessity checks. Authorization Coordinators may also interview patients and guarantors to obtain information and must be able to articulate information in a manner that patients, guarantors and family members understand and so they know what to expect and have an understanding of their financial responsibilities. This position assumes clinical and financial risk of the organization when collecting and documenting information on behalf of the patient.
Authorization Coordinator must have clinical expertise in order to discuss procedures and medical denials with the payer source. The Authorization Coordinator will work with medical staff, nursing, ancillary departments, insurance payers and other external sources to assist families in obtaining healthcare and financial services.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
• Complete financial clearance process according to University Health’s requirements
• Ensure all referrals and treatment authorizations for all patient types have been obtained according with the University Health’s requirements. If not obtained, contact payers for approvals
• Review of all patients when a physician order does not match a patient class
• Submitting appeals on cases that meet medical necessity and have been denied by a payer source
• Completes medical necessity checks, and work with clinics and ancillary service departments if medical necessity fails or if referrals /authorizations are denied.
Communication & Miscellaneous
• Advises manager and clinical liaison of possible postponement or deferrals of any elective/non-emergent admission which has not been approved prior to service date. Maintains accurate files for pre-processing information as required.
• Investigates, resolves and documents patient problems in a timely and efficient manner, Maintains accurate files for pre-processing information and contacts medical staff, nursing staff, ancillary departments and administration as necessary.
• Assists with cross training function in areas within Patient Access services.
• Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
• May assist with providing hands on training to new employees and working with existing employees who require retraining or need to learn a new aspect of their job
• May perform daily accuracy reports and quality assurance reviews of accounts
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
• Minimum Education: LPN certification
• Minimum Experience: Two to three years clinical experience in a healthcare setting
• Preferred Experience: Experience with automated patient account system and basic knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet applications and Internet; One year Admitting experience and/or health insurance experience
