Classical Catholic Homeschool: Catholic Schoolhouse

Dear Friends,
We are going back home to St. Mary of the Pines for our Catholic Schoolhouse Day! Praise God! We are going to start next Thursday January 28 at 9:10am (right after daily mass). The parishioners at SMOP love when we come to daily mass, which is at 8:30am so please come with your kids if you can! Here is our tentative schedule:

1. 9:10-9:30am in the Church: Morning prayer, Pledge of Allegiance, Morning Talk, and Chorus (still looking for an awesome parent or volunteer to lead us in praising God with our voices).
2. 9:30-10:10am: Split into groups (St. Damien and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton): One group will go to Art. One group to Science. (outside if possible).
3. 10:10-10:30am: Presentations and small snack (Groups together outside when possible)
4. 10:30-11:10am: Art or Science
5. 11:15am: Gather for Angelus and then depart.

I know you are all flexible. If we are inside, 3rd grade and up will need to wear masks. The schedule could change if we see something not working. We are also only going 8 weeks instead of 12. That worked during our COVID craziness last semester. Hopefully, fall semester will be back to normal!

I'm still talking to Athletic Academy to see if we could play after the school day for $5/child. We went last week and the kids really enjoyed the time.

Registration for CSH (if you are new): $95 (per family) and needs to be paid under registration on our website. [email protected].">[email protected]. It will cover this semester and next year because we are already taking new registrations. The money helps to support the training, materials, speakers, etc. of the national organization. Registration will be open on our site in the next week.

Student Fees (per child): $50 for the semester. This covers our liability insurance and the rest goes to the tutors. Please contact me if you would like to tutor and receive some compensation! Paypal to [email protected] or check to "Shreveport Catholic Schoolhouse"

Supply Fees (per child): $30 for the semester. This covers art and science supplies for the semester. It also covers a small snack during the school day. Paypal to [email protected] or check to "Shreveport Catholic Schoolhouse"

Science Topics this semester: The Human Body (my favorite!)
Magnets and Electricity

Artists this semester: Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Alexander Calder, Eric Carle
Art techniques: watercolor, clay, finger paints, origami, craft paints, pencils

Sample Farm Field Trip | Thursday, September 12th!

This field trip is FREE but we wanted to let you know that we'll be starting our field trip at 9:30 AM (instead of 9am like previously mentioned) to allow for anyone who is attending morning mass to make it to the field trip!

Make sure you wear shoes you can roam a farm in and bring water for when it starts to get toasty outside.

Directions
Getting to Sample farm is simple but if you plug the address in your GPS, sometimes it will end up leading you down town. The farm is NOT down town, it is in south Shreveport.

Get on Youree and go south, for basically ever.
Not really ever, but from the Bert Kouns/Youree intersection you will need to drive south for 20 miles.
The farm is right around the 20 mile mark from that intersection, and it's pretty much the only thing out there!
We're excited for a fun, educational morning with friends. Hope to see you there!

Here is the address if you do want to plug it into a GPS but remember, SOUTH on Youree (not north!)

Recap of Week 3:A little different without Heather, Jennifer, and Paula, but still staying strong! Here are some comments from our tutors:

St. Maximilian Kolbe: St. Maximilian Kolbe class started out with our survey of the day using plural nouns to tell about each others pets. We continue to learn new facts about our artist , Saint and composer. We listened to Handel “Messiah” and discussed the instruments we heard, loud/soft tones, fast/slow speed and how it make us feel. We continued to learn our memory work through hand motions, games and exercise! We reviewed from last few weeks by pulling a card from a bag and reciting the memory work together.

St. Therese's class: Pre grammar started the morning with singing and dancing. Explored geography terms with play doh. The letter S with a surprise baggie of goodies and enjoyed their snacks with a book about islands. A favorite is still finding the mouse under the timeline cards.

St. Mother Teresa's class: These kids showed flexibility and courtesy to Ms. Jini, Ms. Stefanie, Ms. Marti, Ms. Bailey who filled in for Ms. Heather and Ms. Jennifer. There was a lot of getting the wiggles out through "animal" style walking and silly games. They were able to learn about St. Teresa on her memorial day! They also enjoyed going through the time line. Stars were given out for virtuous behavior, but apparently not enough. (Heather they are keeping track of their stars so you can reward them when you return!)

St. Ignatius class-We had another great week with dialectic. The class added more Greek roots to our knowledge. The Socratic Seminar on natural vs. unnatural was very thought provoking. The boys took home their research cards to work on over the break for our first history project when they return for week 4. In IEW, we added the who-which clause. Our sentence that we made up utilizing our 2 dress ups thus far—-Joshua, who is fourteen, completely dominates speed derivatives. Joshua won our game of speed derivatives as well as the gift card give away this week.

Art- Our artists were very busy this week learning about da Vinci’s Mona Lisa and drawing a self portrait. We did a short lesson on proportion and features then jumped right into drawing a figure in each child’s likeness. It was so interesting to see how each portrait developed! We also talked about how to use multiple colors to add depth to our portraits. I read a short book about Leonardo da Vinci while the worked and listened to our composer George Fredrick Handel in the background. All in all we had a busy but productive week 3!

Science: St. Therese's class (pre-grammar) did so well learning about the different parts of the cell. I saw such good self-control. St. Maximillian's class was definitely enthusiastic (working on self-control) about building cells with the legos and they had excellent recall of the previous science memory work. St. Mother Teresa's class were so enthusiastic and high energy in science class that it was a little bit of a challenge to get through all the material. They did do an excellent job as a team building a cell with the larger duplo legos. I know that are growing in self-control and will definitely be ready for the next lesson! St. Ignatius' class had fun playing pharaoh and measuring cubits this time. They also worked on factor conversions. They calculated that Noah's Ark, which was 300 cubits, was probably larger than an NFL football stadium!

Field Trip to Sample Farm1214 Highway 1 South, Shreveport, LA 71115 on Thursday! Swimming at the Dill's farm after the field trip! Bring a lunch!

Continue to listen to the memory work CDs!!

We will present some materials for the class and try to answer as many questions as possible about this class (7th-9th). General information

Catholic Schoolhouse is a supplemental program designed to help homeschool families enrich their educational experience through a flexible approach to learning inspired by classical elements, presented in a structured environment. Children from 4 years old to 11 years study the same topics in the grammar program, delving deeper into the material as they grow older. The whole family has a place at Catholic Schoolhouse. Dialectic (7th-9th grade) and rhetoric stage (10th-12th grade) students have opportunities for discussion, logic development, and speaking, while staying focused on the fine arts and history time periods of the tour guide to facilitate family cohesiveness. Catholic Schoolhouse is more than a day out of the house; it can help bring structure and cohesiveness to your entire homeschool experience and will bless your family. The Shreveport Catholic Schoolhouse Chapter currently has a pre-grammar program (2.5yrs-4yrs), two grammar classes (4yrs-6yrs and 7yrs -11yrs), and a nursery for the 2018-2019 school year.
