[04/14/18]   On April 13 the United States, Great Britain, and France conducted a concerted series of simultaneous air strikes on Syria. The weapons used were seaborne tomahawk cruise missiles and their Air Force equivalents for the United States and similar weapons from British and French forces. The strikes were planned to reduce or eliminate Syrian, and therefore, Russian, ability to research, develop, and deploy chemical weapons within that war-ravaged nation. The recent use of such weapons north of Damascus to drive out anti-Assad forces goes against the grain of humanity and political gains, even in a civil war. This is deterrence at its finest. There is no question as to the allies' intent. There can be no issue of resolve to use adequate but not extensive force to achieve limited goals. On Saturday morning, April 14, Russia called an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to voice complaints. It was heartening to see the response by almost all members to the Russian ambassador's tepid pleas. Even China was lukewarm in its comments. The hope is that Russia will force President Assad to temper his methods. This may not be as unlikely as it seems. For all its bravado and saber rattling in the Middle East, Russia cannot afford to get into a direct shooting war with the West. Its economy would crumble, President Putin would lose face (much more that after this week), and its much hoped-for gains would crumble.

Today, the LSUS Strategic Alternatives Consortium, the LSUS History Department, and many community sponsors, hosted a special commemorative symposium to mark the 15th anniversary. There were many inspirational moments, and many profound opportunities for reflection, as we reviewed the event and its legacy for the nation.
Never forget.

Many thanks to the entire university community, and a special thanks to our students who worked hard to help make it happen.
