CADA to Feature Danny Trejo
Sharing the miracle of recovery, saving lives
by Susan Reeks

Cult horror film and animated comedy fans, unite! Danny Trejo is coming to Bossier City’s CenturyLink Center as the keynote speaker for CADA’s 61st Annual Dinner on Oct. 9. Doors open at 6 p.m., and the program begins at 6:30.

If you’re the kind of person that lives by first impressions, you might think Danny is one loco hombre – and a preliminary look at the film roles that made him famous does nothing to dispel that notion: “Machete,” “From Dusk

’Till Dawn,” “Sons of Anarchy” and “Breaking Bad” lead the list. But if you bother to dig a little deeper, you’ll find Trejo has also done voiceovers in animation, such as “King of the Hill,” “American Dad,” “Rick and Morty” and G-rated entertainment such as “The Adventures of Puss in Boots” and “Storks.” His work in kids’ movies such as “Spy Kids” and the recently released “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” where Trejo does the voice over for Boots, the adorable little CGI monkey, has broadened his fan base to include all ages. His celebrity has been used to sell everything from cars to cable TV to Snickers bars.

I wouldn’t judge Trejo by the fact that he spent his early years in prison, either. As a child, Trejo struggled with addiction that resulted in 11 years in and out of prison on armed robbery and drug charges. While in San Quentin, he won both lightweight and welterweight prison boxing titles and successfully completed a rehab program that changed his life.

“The reality is, in 1968, I was on my way to the gas chamber,” Trejo said. “Today, I’ve been ....

Meeting People Where They Are
by Susan Reeks
Profile: Bill Rose with CADA

William E. “Bill” Rose Jr. has been the executive director of CADA (The Council on Alcoholism & Drug Abuse of Northwest Louisiana) since 2012, overseeing the organization’s 15 programs in four facilities that provide substance use treatment for adults and adolescents. With Rose at the helm, CADA has become a leading provider of addiction-related prevention, education and treatment in the state of Louisiana.

In addition to adult residential and outpatient treatment, CADA is one of the only providers in Louisiana to treat pregnant women for substance use disorders, and also accepts women with their dependent children up to 12 years of age.

More recently, CADA is the first organization in the state to get a Crisis Outreach Team out on the streets, reaching out to those who need opioid-specific treatment.

“The Crisis Outreach Team educates health-care professionals, educators, law enforcement and citizens using relevant, evidence-based information,” Rose said.

“The team distributes NARCAN, a nasal spray that saves the lives of overdose victims, and Dispose Rx packets used to dissolve unwanted opioids so they won’t fall into the wrong hands.”

Much of Rose’s insight into addiction and recovery comes from his own history with drugs and alcohol. “I am 31 years sober, and I’m grateful to all of those who walked this path before me and showed me the way,” he said. “This is the way I show my gratitude for those that have provided me with this opportunity to

Oh, this will be a good one, folks. Today, Kent Dean will lead us in a skills training session on "fogging." As Kent puts it, "identifying a manipulative conversation and extricating oneself from it in a compassionate way from so-called "fogging." THIS IS A TOOL YOU CAN USE! (See below the link for a little more detail.

Join us for today's Tootsie Davis Family Education Meeting on Zoom at noon:

How would you use this training? In a conversation or endless texts with someone who's fogging you, like a loved one who can be desperate and not very rational due to a substance use disorder. But also for those of us who grew up in a home where addiction lived, we assumed "family roles," (a topic for another day) and the very behavior characteristics that helped us survive then, still come back when we encounter stress today. The point is, we are finding that the tools and ideas we learn in the Tootsie Davis program are helping us with all relationships, including the workplace and out in the real world. This topic is a good time to give Tootsie a try. Hope to see you today at noon!
