We hope you'll join us today at noon on Zoom for our next Tootsie Davis Family Education meeting. We've been making some tremendous progress with our regular attendees. Some of our regulars are living with a spouse with substance use disorder. Some of us have adult children who need addiction treatment but refuse to get help. Some of us were raised by alcoholics and are still struggling with behaviors that are a direct consequence of that childhood trauma. And yes, some of us have experienced all of the above.

One of the strategies suggested to us at the last meeting was to come up with a list of things we like to do when the frustration, stress and fear set in - things that allow us to get outside of our own heads and calm down. On my own list, I've added writing fiction, and my favorite, doing something to help someone in need. Things like this help me get away from that rabbit hole of downward spiral thinking and find peace - sometimes even joy. It starts with the list, because we must remind ourselves to grab that list and find an alternative to the pain. What would be on your list?

Making the list wasn't the only assignment from our last meeting. Putting these strategies into practice is what makes the magic happen. When we remember to actually use the strategies we've been learning through DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), we take a little power back into our own hands - and minds. If you don't know what DBT is, you can watch a series of brief videos on how to incorporate these mood-changing strategies into your own life at https://www.cadanwla.org/famsupport.
