We salute #LivingLegend, Mr. Sonrose Rutledge!

KOKA The Heart of Gospel, in partnership with #SUSLA, honored the radio powerhouse with a reception at our MS KICK following a street dedication recognizing Mr. Rutledge as a famed disc jockey.

His career began in #Shreveport in the 1960s. Known as “Gay Poppa” in the 1970s and later as “Poppa”, Mr. Rutledge was the leading radio voice for Shreveport’s African-American community for over three decades.

His voice was instrumental to the area for not only bringing in Black music artists ranging from #TheJacksons to #ArethaFranklin, but for initiating and mobilizing community engagement drawing much-needed awareness to #SickleCell, area homelessness, and raising money for Black college students.

Welcome to Shreveport’s first Incubator and Community Kitchen

The Milam Street Incubator Kitchen (MS KICK) is a Shreveport Choice Neighborhood Planning and Action Grant. This shared kitchen concept was developed as a revitalization plan for Allendale, Ledbetter and West Edge neighborhoods. MS KICK will function as a business incubator, training center, and community space, focused on culinary industries and health. MS KICK will nurture small catering and culinary businesses, as well as provided certifications in the culinary field of expertise. Key focus is training neighborhood residents and small business owners on generating sufficient income, growing into a brick and mortar facility or expanding locally or nationally.

The past three decades have seen an explosion of interest in the development of facilities and services that focus on the agricultural and food manufacturing segments of local, especially rural, economies. During the same period, business incubators continued to grow in popularity as a way to stimulate business growth and create jobs. Interests in local food converged with the business incubator model to produce a hybrid: the “kitchen incubator” a facility with associated services where food entrepreneurs and farmers receive help in producing value-added food products.

Large cities have always had an underground food economy that involved people making and selling specialties from home kitchens. This is often an important source of household income in immigrant communities and for others who have not yet entered the mainstream economy. The incubators were developed to serve a unique set of issues in each community: job training and business development for low-wealth residents, places for local farmers to add value to their crops, locations for food producers who had operated “under the radar” to access the equipment and skills needed to meet food safety laws, and so on. Especially in rural communities, the kitchen incubator was seen as a place where farmers and home cooks could preserve their produce so that it could be legally and safely sold in local markets.
