Senior Spotlight: Drake Roten
Drake was a four year member of our boys team. He was 4th overall at 2A state in the 275's in 2018 and 2019. This year Drake was seeing #1 in the SHW heading into 1A State. Drakes best lifts were 545 squat, 360 bench, and a 515 deadlift.
Drake was a funny situation. I remember his sophomore year he was debating to lift at regionals or go the literary rally. We told Drake need him to be our 275 to help get the seniors a ring. He did just that and never looked back. He has bought in and sat a goal of a 600 lb squat at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, we finally got you suit broke in and were set to hit your goal. Drake, I enjoyed your humor and selection of music, even though some other lifters may not agree. Parker, the torch is passed, sir.
Senior Spotlight: Eli Chism
Eli Chism is a 4 year member and 2 years member of our state squad. Eli was our 220 last year and finished 3rd at 1A state. This year Eli was asked to move up a weight class and was heading into state #1 in the 242. Eli's best lifts were 455 squat, 310 bench, 465 deadlift with really only regionals under his belt while traveling the country to secure a football scholarship. We were looking for big numbers at state finally in our rhythm. Eli finished with a 4.0 GPA and earned his way to the composite academic all-state team. He was selected to receive a $300-$500 scholarship from the LHSPLA.
Eli was never one to complain. He was waiting on me in the weight room often being a senior. While traveling, he would ask for the workouts. Eli really made great progress from his sophomore year to his junior year. Like many families, the Chism's were aways there to support at hosting meets or car rides. I would coin Eli our team dad. My friends, don't be strangers!
Eli is signed to deep snap at Arkansas. Whoo pig sooie!
Senior Spotlight: Josh Peterman
Josh came on strong his senior year to make the state crew. Josh placed 12th at 1-5A North regionals and was 4th going into 1A state. Josh's best lifts were 500 squat, 285 bench, and 495 deadlift.
Josh comes to us with an olympic lifting background his junior year. He had to battled back from a fractured fibula to lift his senior year. I'm proud of Josh as he was really starting to learn his equipment.
Josh is going to continue his football career at Mississippi College.
Senior Spotlight: Cameron Thomas
Cameron was the 2A state runner-up last year in the 165's. He was the 2A state runner-up in the 165 lb weight class. This year finished 2nd at 1-5A North Regionals and was #1 going into 1A state this year pretty easily. Cameron's best lifts are squat 455 bench 300, and deadlift 515. Cameron broke the 1A state deadlift record unofficially at North Regionals.
Cameron is one of the hardest workers we have on any team i've ever coached. Don't expect him to miss a rep. He will do everything right and won't make the same mistake. He was the type of kid to do whatever the team needed to do to succeed. A con to his strength is his 10th and 11th grade I asked Cameron to move up a weight class to help the team. He should have been an individual state champion 3 times, including this year, but put himself aside for us to succeed.
Cameron will further his football career at Henderson St in the fall.
Senior Spotlight: Cameron Fileccia
Cameron is a 4 year varsity lifter. He was the 123 lb 2A state champion looking to repeat again this year. Cameron won the 123's at 1-5A North Regionals and seeded as the #1 123 heading into 1A state. Cameron's best lifts were squat 345/ bench 185/ deadlift 375 and a 905 total. Cameron had his eyes on the squat state record and total.
Cameron came to us the summer going into his freshman year. His mother, a die hard Calvary supporter, "voluntold" him to help Coach Vandy and the Malone's paint the weight room. I'm picking, but close enough. Once Cameron put some skin in the game, I knew he was sold. Cameron was the type to always bring his A game to the meets. He also understood the big picture of going into weight classes he needed to for his team. Cameron is loyal as them come. That will be the biggest trait I miss on a daily basis. He will surely be missed by his coaches and teammates. Cameron plans to lift at the next level once this virus blows over.
[04/12/20] Happy Easter!
Senior spotlight: Kailey Brookshire
Well, this one will be long and hurts. Kailey was a varsity member for 4 years. Actually, Kailey was the very first girl to start our Lady Cavs squad. She believed in my vision before our journey together even started. This year you moved up a weight class, again, so the team could score more points. She still won 1st in the 123's and overall best lifter at 1-5A North Regions. Kailey broke the squat, bench, deadlift, and total records unofficially. She was also ranked #1 in the 123's by almost 200 lbs going into 1A state. Kaileys best lifts are 325 lb squat, 185 lb bench, and 325 lb deadlift.
Kaileys high school accomplishments:
9th- 2A 105's State runner-up
10th- 2A 105 lb State Champion Overall Best Lifter
*2018 103 lb Raw National Champion
11th- 2a 114 lb State Champion Overall Best Lifter
*Holds the 2A 114 squat, bench, deadlift, and total records
* 2019 103 lb Raw National Champion
* Bench Worlds in Tokyo, Japan 2nd place.
* National deadlift record
I'll just put your state records in a picture lol.
Besides Kailey's individual accomplishment there was one thing she wanted more than anything-a team state title. This was the year. We were set to win it by 15+ team points over 2nd place. You were 5 days out. We may or may not ever be officially the 2020 team state champions. However, you did help bring us a state championship quality team over the years. You helped put us on the map nationally and proudly represented the state of Louisiana.
Your energy, passion, intensity, a courage is what made our team champions. I always said, leave you mark. Well, kid, you did.
Senior Spotlight: Mya Evans
Next up, Mya Evans was a 3 year varsity member. Mya was the 2019 2A 105 lb state champion for the Lady Cavs. She placed 2nd at North Regionals this year. She was seeded as the #1 for the 105s at 1A state. Her best lifts are 220 squat, 105 bench, and 275 deadlift. She unofficially broke the 1A LA State record on deadlift at North Regionals. No doubt she would have held all the 1A state records if there was a state meet. Something she took a lot of pride in during her training.
Mya is infamous for her grandma cookies. Anytime we needed to bribe her to make a personal record or early morning weights, this gal had her supply ready. As an athlete, Mya was a silent assassin. She took ownership of her workouts and didn't say much. She didn't have to because her actions spoke for her. I am going to miss you and Mr. Vital. You guys help build this from the ground up.
Senior Spotlight: Kaylin Little
Kaylin is a 3 year varsity powerlifter. She was the 2A individual state champion in the 148lb class last year. She also broke the 2A State bench record with a 165l lbs. Kaylin holds all of our 148 team records. Her best lifts are 300 squat, 165 bench, and 315 deadlift. This year, Kaylin placed 1st at North Regionals and seeded 2nd going into 1A state this year.
Kaylin came to me her sophomore year. She already had a commitment to her competitive cheer team that was the same weekend as Regionals. She still came to state to support her friends and compete with us at high school nationals. We knew she was going to be special from there.
Let's all remember her for her contagious smile. She was humble, kind, and so much fun. Kaylin was the dancer of the group...even in her squat suit (if we can call that dancing lol). She aways had the ability to stay calm under pressure. She was a great teammate and did whatever she was asked.
[04/10/20] Congrats to Eli Chism being selected in 1A to receive the LHSPLA/LHSAA scholarship award. Another, $300-$500 won’t hurt!
My heart hurts for our seniors, our team, and of course the rest of the seniors in the state. Kids, keep your head up. Coaches, lets be there for them and love on them more than ever.
