Another First for LSU Health Shreveport Neurosurgery
An estimated 500,000 people throughout the world die each year due to ruptured brain aneurysms, with half the victims younger than 50 years of age. The Pipeline embolization device with Shield Technologyᵀᴹ is a new generation flow diverter that improves the treatment of intracranial aneurysms with 78% of patients having COMPLETE aneurysm occlusion in 6 months and 90% in 18 months!

On May 3rd 2021, our neurosurgeons were the first in to use the WEB 17 embolization device at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. This system is an improvement on a previous version now with a smaller profile and ease of use allowing to treat smaller aneurysms in a safer and more efficient way via endovascularly.

Our program, along with Brigham and Women Hospital/Harvard Medical School, is leading the world's LARGEST collaboration for treatment of using the novel Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device.
The "WorldWideWEB Consortium" includes more than 25 large-volume centers from North America, South America and Europe, and aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this novel modality of aneurysm treatment on a large scale.
LSU Health Shreveport Neurosurgery led by Dr. Bharat Guthikonda and the Endovascular Program led by Dr. Hugo Cuellar provide the most advanced treatment for complex aneurysms and malformations in the brain and cord. We are also part of several clinical trials and multicenter research studies that aim to further advance this field and provide our patients with the best possible treatment.
Not only we encourage our residents to do that advances the field of , but we also provide them with all the means to help get their research started and be published such as:
a. Research Coordinator available to assist the residents and fellows in building their research proposal, Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission, consents and other paperwork necessary to start their research project;
b. Medical Editor who is dedicated to help residents with writing and proof-reading their manuscript prior to submission;
c. Medical Illustrator to provide high-quality illustrations for residents and fellows’ research projects;
d. Statistician to provide advanced statistics for residents' research projects.

A 65 year old man was brought to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport with new right-sided weakness and slurred speech. He was found to have a with complete occlusion of one of the major blood vessels in his brain (left M2). The patient was taken to the Neurointerventional Suite where Dr. Hugo Cuellar and PGY-4 resident, Dr. Nimer Adeeb, removed the and restored blood flow to his (thrombectomy) just in time to regain all of his strength.
It is very important that patients with symptoms are brought to hospital ASAP (ideally within 6 hours) to be candidates for .
Our Comprehensive Stroke center is the ONLY 24/7 stroke center in the area and treats hundreds of acute stroke patients each year.
As part of our continuous adoption of the latest to achieve better patient outcome and care, our division of Surgery led by Dr. Hugo Cuellar was the first center in Louisiana to be certified to use the the WEB™ Embolization System for treatment of , since early 2019. Currently, our center proudly has the largest series of patients treated with this novel technology in the South and one of the largest in the United States, with a 100% technical success rate.
Patients eligible for this treatment get access through the radial artery in their wrist, spend one night in the hospital and go home the following day.

We are pleased to share that Hugo Cuellar, MD, PhD, MBA, DABR has been named the permanent Chairman of the Department of Radiology effective September 1, 2020. Dr. Cuellar has served in an exemplary manner as the interim chair since October 1, 2019 demonstrating his passion, compassion and intellectual strength as an educator, clinician and researcher. He joined our faculty in 2010 and has made a meaningful contribution to advancing our mission since his arrival.
Dr. Cuellar is an Associate Professor of Radiology, Neurosurgery and Neurology with tenure and serves as Director of Neuroendovascular Surgery and Neuroimaging and Co-Director of the Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center, which is 1 of only 10 American Heart Association Stroke Certified Thrombectomy Centers in the US.
He completed his internship and residency at the University of Neuvo Leon in Mexico followed by fellowships at LSU Health New Orleans and Hospital Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Spain and an observership at John Hopkins Hospital in interventional neuroradiology. His advanced studies include receiving a Master’s in Neuroscience from the University of Madrid, a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Santiago de Compostela Santiago de Compostela, Spain and his MBA with a healthcare concentration from the University of Texas in Dallas. Prior to joining LSUHS, he worked for the Department of Endovascular Therapy at Hospital Nuestra Senora del Rosario in Madrid, Spain.
Dr. Cuellar has presented nationally and internationally at over 100 conferences, educational courses, and clinics, and is a senior member of numerous national and international societies including the Radiological Society of North America, the European Society of Neuroradiology, and the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology. He serves as Web Editor for Ibero Latin American Society of Neuroradiology, and has published 97 papers, 8 book chapters in addition to serving as an investigator on multiple clinical trials.

Strokes can happen at any age. It’s important to be educated on all of the symptoms of a stroke and warning signs. It’s important to BE FAST.
B (balance) – Is there a sudden loss of balance or coordination?
E (eyes) – Is there sudden blurred or double vision or sudden, persistent vision trouble?
F (face) – Ask the person to smile. Is one or both sides of the face drooping?
A (arms) – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one side drift downward? Is there weakness or numbness on one side?
S (speech) – Does the person have slurred or garbled speech? Can he/she repeat simple phrases?
T (time) – Call 911 for immediate medical attention if you notice one or more of these signs. Also, take note of when symptoms began.
