ANOTHER FIRST FOR NEUROSURGERY

On May 3rd 2021, our neurosurgeons were the first in #Louisiana to use the WEB 17 embolization device at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. This system is an improvement on a previous version now with a smaller profile and ease of use allowing to treat smaller aneurysms in a safer and more efficient way via endovascularly.

A look into one of our recent success stories!

03/13/2021

Our program, along with Brigham and Women Hospital/Harvard Medical School, is leading the world's LARGEST collaboration for treatment of #brain #aneurysms using the novel Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device.

The "WorldWideWEB Consortium" includes more than 25 large-volume centers from North America, South America and Europe, and aims to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this novel modality of aneurysm treatment on a large scale.

LSU Health Shreveport Neurosurgery led by Dr. Bharat Guthikonda and the Endovascular Program led by Dr. Hugo Cuellar provide the most advanced treatment for complex aneurysms and #vascular malformations in the brain and #spinal cord. We are also part of several clinical trials and multicenter research studies that aim to further advance this field and provide our patients with the best possible treatment.

SUCCESS STORY SATURDAY!

A 65 year old man was brought to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport with new right-sided weakness and slurred speech. He was found to have a #stroke with complete occlusion of one of the major blood vessels in his brain (left M2). The patient was taken to the Neurointerventional Suite where Dr. Hugo Cuellar and PGY-4 resident, Dr. Nimer Adeeb, removed the #clot and restored blood flow to his #brain (thrombectomy) just in time to regain all of his strength.

10/09/2020

It is very important that patients with #stroke symptoms are brought to hospital ASAP (ideally within 6 hours) to be candidates for #thrombectomy.

Our Comprehensive Stroke center is the ONLY 24/7 stroke center in the area and treats hundreds of acute stroke patients each year.

10/06/2020

As part of our continuous adoption of the latest #technology to achieve better patient outcome and care, our division of #Neurointerventional Surgery led by Dr. Hugo Cuellar was the first center in Louisiana to be certified to use the the WEB™ Embolization System for treatment of #brain #aneurysms, since early 2019. Currently, our center proudly has the largest series of patients treated with this novel technology in the South and one of the largest in the United States, with a 100% technical success rate.

Patients eligible for this treatment get access through the radial artery in their wrist, spend one night in the hospital and go home the following day.

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Lifestyle changes and medical monitoring can help prevent the risk of stroke.

The LSU Health Shreveport Department of Neurosurgery Endovascular Program

Endovascular Neurological Surgery is a sub-specialty of Neurological Surgery that uses catheter technology, radiological imaging, and clinical expertise to diagnose and treat diseases of the central nervous system. The LSU Health Shreveport Dept of Neurosurgery Residency program is one of a select few which offer both open surgical and endovascular treatment.

Surgeons in the program have been nationally recognized for their expertise in endovascular and open surgical approaches to neurovascular disease, most recently receiving the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Silver Quality Achievement Award. Our endovascular neurosurgeons manage all aspects of stroke and cerebrovascular disorders as well as the coordination of subsequent therapeutic strategies including surgery, interventional neuroradiology, stereotactic radiosurgery and rehabilitation.

The LSU Health Shreveport Department of Neurosurgery Endovascular Program aims to train the next generation of endovascular neurosurgeons by exposing residents to the entire spectrum of the most current treatments for adult and pediatric neurointerventional pathology, focusing on developing both technical skills and outstanding clinical acumen. With the use of state-of-the-art neurointerventional suites and the recent partnership with Ochsner Health System, this is an exciting time for growth and innovation for our program.
