Join us in celebrating the residents of LSU Health Shreveport for the next 24 hours! Residency is the training physicians must complete to practice or specialize following medical school. A resident is a physician (who holds the degree of MD, DDS or DO) in a Graduate Medical Education program under the direct or indirect supervision of an attending physician. LSU Health Shreveport currently offers 43 fully accredited residency and fellowship programs. More than 5,000 residents and fellows have trained at our institution over the years.

Today, LSU Health Shreveport hosted medical students to give them an opportunity to visit with leadership and residents from every clinical department at the 2021 Career Fair. This is the second year the event was offered with the purpose of providing students insight into anesthesiology directly from our Faculty and Residents

The Dept. of Anesthesiology participated in the Pars for Peds golf tournament on Saturday August 14th and finished in 3rd place. NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr Jibin Mathew, MD completed medical school and Anesthesiology residency from Jawaharlal institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry which is an institute of national importance in India. He subsequently worked for 4 years as a Critical Care Physician in Alexandra hospital (JHS), Singapore. Subsequently he moved to the US and completed Anesthesiology residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, New York. He completed Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. In his spare time, Dr Mathew enjoys spending time with his family, playing Cricket, traveling and exploring different cultures and cuisines.
NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Varsha Allampalli received her medical school training from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical college, Belgaum, India. She completed Anesthesiology residency from Jawaharlal institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry a premier institute in India. After a brief stint as a medical officer in the Department of Anesthesiology at Alexandra hospital, Singapore Dr Allampalli completed Anesthesiology residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, New York in 2019. She stayed back at SUNY Upstate to receive subspecialty training in Interventional pain management. She enjoys traveling especially visiting close friends and family in India and Singapore and practicing yoga.
NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Hong Le has joined as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology. He completed his undergraduate degree at LSU-Baton Rouge and medical school at LSUHSC-New Orleans. Dr. Le completed his Anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He is an avid LSU fan cheering on the Tigers. Welcome to the department, Dr. Le.

NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT... Meeta Sheth, M.D. graduated from D.Y. Patil medical school in Mumbai India and completed her Anesthesiology residency at the University of Mississippi medical center in Jackson. She completed a cardiac anesthesia fellowship at University of Alabama, Birmingham and certified in Trans-esophageal Echocardiography. She serves as Director of Echocardiography and Co-director of cardiac anesthesiology. Dr Sheth is married to Dr Michael Sheth who is a Chronic Pain physician and they have three kids. In her free time, Dr Sheth enjoys traveling different countries, knitting and cooking.

National Doctors’ Day is observed every year on March 30. 🩺 Today, especially during this challenging time, we want to recognize and thank our LSU Health Shreveport residents, fellows and faculty physicians who have dedicated their life’s work to taking care of and saving the lives of others, as well as teaching the next generation of doctors.
NEW FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Alan David Kaye, MD, PhD, is Professor within the Department of Anesthesiology at LSUHSC Shreveport and also serves as Professor within the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology, and Neurosciences. He is the Provost, Chief Academic Officer, and Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at LSUHSC Shreveport. Prior to his arrival in Nov, 2019, Dr. Kaye served for 15 years as Professor, Program Director, and Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at LSUHSC in New Orleans. Before coming to LSU, he was Professor, Program Director, and Chairman for 6 years of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Department of Anesthesiology in Lubbock, Texas. Prior, he was the Medical Director of the Greater New Orleans Surgical Center, the Director of Resident Recruitment, Program Director and an Attending Staff of the Department of Anesthesiology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans. He was born in New York and raised in Los Angeles and Tucson. Dr. Kaye received two BS degrees and a MD degree from the University of Arizona. He was a national finalist for a Rhodes Scholarship, Honors Student of the Year, Who's Who, Phi Beta Kappa, and the Outstanding Graduating Senior in his class. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Alton Oschner Clinic and trained in Anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Tulane University where he served as chief resident and president of the Louisiana State Residents Component of the American Society of Anesthesiology. He also completed a pain management fellowship at Texas Tech Health Sciences Center under Dr. Gabor Racz, Dr. Prithvi Raj and Dr. Miles Day. He is Board Certified as a Consultant in Anesthesiology and has a special certificate in Pain Management for the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Pain Medicine and the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians.
Dr. Kaye completed his PhD in pharmacology in May 1997. His thesis title was "Pharmacology of Angiotensin Peptides and Nonpeptide Agonists in the Pulmonary Vascular Bed of the Cat and of the Rat." He was awarded first place in the National Student Research Forum as a resident and has authored or co-authored over 200 abstracts, 800 manuscripts, and 250 book chapters in the fields of pharmacology, pain medicine, and anesthesiology. He has had a lifelong interest in education and teaching medical students and residents. He serves on a number of national committees including as a National Board of Directors of ASIPP and ABIPP. He is editor-in-chief of the journals Pain Physician and Current Pain and Headache Reports, and is on the FDA Advisory Board on Anesthetics and Analgesics. He was previously an Associate National Board Examiner in Anesthesiology. He and his wife, who is a pathologist, have two children.
