Happy Birthday to
Dr. Tim Keiffer!
Still need to get vaccinated? Need a booster? Need a COVID-19 test?

LSUHS continues to offer vaccinations and testing to the public Monday through Saturday from 10am-5pm at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds (3710 Hudson Avenue).

See the attached description for details!
Our first seminar of the 2022 Spring Seminar Series is today at 4pm in Room 8-314. Junior student Connor Roan in Dr. Monica Gestal's lab will present his first library seminar.

Library seminars are part of the Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology curriculum. This type of seminar gives students the opportunity to discuss an area of research that is not directly related to their dissertation research.

Connor's seminar is titled "Beyond hemostasis: the role of platelets during infection".
Good luck this afternoon, Connor!
Happy Birthday to
Dr. Rona Scott!
Congratulations to members of the Ivanov and Dragoi labs for publishing a paper!
(Dr. Stanimir Ivanov, Dr. Ana-Maria Dragoi, Dr. Magda Circu, Dr. Maria Dolores Juarez Rodriguez, and Reneau Castore Youngblood)

Their paper titled "Neisseria gonorrhoeae subverts formin-dependent actin polymerization to colonize human macrophages" can be found in the January 2022 issue of PLoS Pathogens.

Check it out at the following link below:

Welcome back to campus and the start of a new semester in the LSUHS Department of Microbiology and Immunology!
As a reminder, due to the rising number of positive COVID-19 cases locally and nationwide, our Interim Chancellor Dr. David Lewis has reinstated the mask mandate so be sure to wear your masks and practice social distancing. If you're unsure of how far 6 feet is, it's roughly the size of two adult Brown Pelicans!
Congratulations to Nick First, a junior student in Dr. Monica Gestal's lab, for winning first place at the 3-Minute Thesis competition organized by the International Bordetella Lab Meeting (IBLM). The title of Nick's talk was "Vasoactive intestinal peptide and its receptor 2 mediate host-pathogen interactions during Bordetella spp. infections".

This week, the IBLM (organized by our very own Dr. Monica Gestal together with Dr. Karen Scanlon at Baltimore University) held its final meeting of 2021 in the form of a Three-Minute Thesis Competition. This competition was open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows across the globe. Competitors described their work in 3 minutes using a single static PowerPoint slide. The idea behind the 3-MT is to be able to explain your work so that anyone at the high school level or above can fully understand the project.

Other winners include:
2nd place: Killian O' Connell from the University of Virginia
3rd place: Jan Capek from the Institute of Microbiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences
This year is coming to a close and we wanted to share some news with everyone about one of our professors in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Dennis O'Callaghan wrapped up his more than 55 year teaching career to medical students in January 2021. His students surprised him with cheers and flowers to show their appreciation. His first lecture to medical students was in September of 1965 and his final lecture was January 12, 2021.

Dr. O'Callaghan has been a pivotal member of this department. He developed the Microbiology and Immunology Doctoral Program and established the Center for Molecular and Tumor Virology. He was also named Chairman of the Department in 1984 and has dedicated his time and expertise to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, medical residents and faculty throughout his time here.

His contributions to the department have not gone unnoticed. Although he has wrapped up his teaching of medical students, he can still be seen around the Department offering advice and teaching graduate students. If you see him around campus, be sure to congratulate him on his accomplishments.
Today at 4pm, James Trammel will give our final seminar of the semester. Mr. Trammel is the Director of Biostatistics for Vaccine Research and Development at Pfizer and his seminar is titled "248: Development of Pfizer/BioNTech's COVID-19 Vaccine".

Welcome to LSUHS, Mr. Trammel!
Today at 4pm, Dr. Changwon Park will present the next seminar in the 2021 Fall Seminar Series for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Park is an Associate Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology here at LSUHS.
Dr. Park's seminar is titled "ETV2, a key player for vessel development and pathophysiologic angiogenesis".
Please join me in congratulating Bailey Mosher for successfully defending her dissertation yesterday morning! Bailey may be small, but she has a huge personality and we are going to miss her when she is gone.

Congrats again, Dr. Bailey Mosher!
Go forth and do great science!
This morning at 10:00 am in Room B3-322, we have a Special Dissertation Seminar!

Bailey Mosher will present her dissertation seminar titled "HCMV Manipulates Syntaxin 6 to Achieve Nuclear Translocation in Monocytes".

Bailey is a senior student in Dr. Andrew Yurochko's lab. Good luck today, Bailey!

**This seminar is presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology.**

Today at 4pm, junior student Jessica Trammel in Dr. Jason Bodily's lab will present her second library seminar.

Presenting two library seminars is one of the Ph.D. requirements for the program. These types of seminars can be based on any topic other than the student's dissertation research and they allow new students to read through the literature and identify two papers that can be put together to tell a story. These papers can complement or contradict each other.

Jessica's seminar is titled "Enteric bacteria and serotonin biosynthesis". Good Luck today, Jessica!
