What do I do? I spend my days, nights and weekends managing the care for any number of seniors in the Shreveport/Bossier area. What does that mean? It might mean taking them to a procedure and being their advocate, conversing with their doctors about their care, helping them make informed decisions about advance directives, or seeing a need for home health or hospice and making it happen. But you also may find me picking up groceries, changing a light bulb, watering plants, calling a handyman, or any of an infinite list of things that you have found yourself doing for your own loved ones. Providing a senior who lives home alone the opportunity and assistance they require for a simple FaceTime call with their loved ones is a priceless gift that brings smiles for miles. Managing care for our seniors is of utmost importance and is all too often overlooked, often simply because there is nobody available to see the unmet needs. Physical needs, social, and mental health needs are equally important. Having a feeling of purpose and self worth is critical to each individual. Being a geriatric nurse does not indicate that my specialty is changing a catheter for someone over the age of 65. It means that I advocate on every level for seniors, and ensure their best interest is always put first.
When someone is diagnosed with dementia, their need to have feelings of purpose don’t diminish. They reach an all-new level of importance. Many of my hours are spent teaching those in need of dementia education, as well as engaging those people who have dementia. If you are a caregiver in need of “boots on the ground” skills to make a better quality of life for someone with dementia, call me, text me, email me...ASK ME!!!! It is available. And it costs you nothing.
