Proud of our very own Kalena Bovell, conductor

"It is an honor to be a part of the important work that the University of Michigan SMTD is doing in giving voices to three black composers over the next 10 years. One of the works features the text from my poem Tethered Voices!
"Three compositions have been commissioned to date. The first commission, “Tethered Voices,” was initially recorded on video in September 2021 but will have its first live performance before an audience at U-M on April 6, 2022. Composed by SMTD alumnus James Lee III (BM ’99, MM ’01, DMA ’05), this eight-minute work for narrator and orchestra is a setting of a new poem of the same name by poet and conductor Kalena Bovell."

We have been working on something big and the time has finally come to introduce you to our new look! We are changing our name to the Sewanee Music Center! Don't worry; we are still running all of our regular programming, but we've grown beyond just the summer, and beyond one single program. The Sewanee Music Center is home to the Sewanee Summer Music Festival, OperaFest Sewanee, the Sewanee String Academy, and the University Performing Arts Series.
.
While incorporating abstract letters invoking the shape of an "S" for Sewanee and a "C" for Center, the new logo also references the stunning winding roads and hills of our beloved mountain.
.
We love our new look, and we hope you do too!

Bravo Mastra JoAnn Falletta

The New York Concert Review was at the BPO Carnegie Hall concert honoring Lukas [email protected] 100. Here’s a sample of what they said:

“It was wonderful to see a packed hall even in spite of the bad weather, with a large number of BPO supporters festooned with BPO face masks and many young people. Those in attendance were rewarded with the experience of hearing a world-class orchestra, led by a conductor who rates as one the all-time greats, playing the music of an authentic musical genius. Maybe this concert is a step in “righting the wrong” of this country’s relative neglect of Foss, who is every bit the national treasure that Copland and Bernstein are – a voice of optimism, idealism, and great expanses. “
