Phoenix Gharana School of Indian Arts, striving for excellence in all areas of Hindustani Shastriya Sangeet

Phoenix Gharana School of Indian Arts was established in 2006 by Manu Srivastava in effort to promote. Indian Classical Music. We strive for excellence in all areas of Hindustani Shastriya Sangeet. The main focus is on the generation X and Y. Indian Classical Music is losing its place and value amongst these generations and it is the intent of this school to revive the interest among them. Today’s generation is tomorrow’s torch bearer of this valuable art and this school is established to accomplish this goal.

Teaching Raag Gavati in Scottsdale

A very interesting experience yesterday performing at the Swarazankar music festival finale. Many supportive words, many encouraging words, much shoosha and fun. Some people or shall I say critic said I sang too little when I performed for 1.5 hrs😀. I guess it’s a good thing as that time seemed not enough for them. Performed Pooriya Kalyan for 55 minutes with accompanists I have never even sat with before. All artists have a comfort level with accompanists. The way they give theka or harmonium support is crucial....def a learning experience. Kudos to them for sticking with me and my style. The outdoor tent started off 30% filled but within 20 minutes the hall started to fill rapidly. By 5:45 PM it was 85% filled. Kudos to the swarazankar team for the amazing success. I know what it takes to put up a program this massive. I can only imagine all they had to do to make it such a huge success. Thousands and thousands of people attending was a phenomenal site to see.....last time I saw this was at Tansen Samaroh.

Some very committed kids of Phoenix Gharana braved the winter and started their
Journey at 5 AM for the 5 day 6 hour gurukul retreat. The importance of morning swar sadhna. Hopefully they will all work diligently on this to improve.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas

Truly an honor and privilege to be among some stalwarts of Indian Classical Music yesterday. Not only did I perform but witnessed a home environment at Ustaad Rashid Khan’s house where we chatted for hours and had dinner together with Pt. Subhankar Banerjee and Pt. Debojyoti Bose. Celebration of Pt. Bose’s b day along with a dynamic performance was definitely a life time experience. To end it all Ustaad Rashid khans Saheb singing the iconic “yaad Piya ki aye!” Thank you TFN-Darbar team and especially Soma di for the beautiful arrangements🙏.

“Manu Srivastav" started his Hindustani Classical Music training at the tender age of four mainly in the tradition of Gwalior Gharana. Raised in Canada and USA since the age of ten, Manu Srivastav has an unique understanding of both the cultures. He believes that knowledge is the only way to get the younger generation interested in Shastriya Sangeet and hopes to impart it for many years to come.

[11/27/19]   Many young artists ask me what made me want to pursue Indian Classical Music even though I grew up in Canada and USA. How was my journey while pursing it etc....
None of my friends did it and those that tried it gave up in a few years. To be honest, I never thought I would pursue it. I used to do it for my mom who kept pushing me into it like there is nothing else in the world. I always thought I would get into medical school and music would fade like it does for most anyways. Then I can use the excuse “life” and “responsibilities” got in the way of pursuing music further. At age 16 my guruji passed away in my arms and 5 minutes before he left I had his head on my lap and looked right in his eyes and told him I would never let his music die. I would make sure its fragrance spreads in a bigger way outside of just Kanpur. His passion of teaching and propagating would live on in a bigger way. I remember sitting in my Canadian house 2 days after his death thinking how the heck am I going to do this. I cried for days as I made a promise to a dying man without knowing how I will accomplish it. But I forgot that there is a higher power watching out. The following summer I went to India to try to find a guru that would take me further. Boy was that a horrible experience. Most are not interested in teaching; they were mostly interested in coming to Canada for a tour. Thank god i was smart enough to get out of those situation. I continued my training under Smt Veena Shukla ( Kanpur) and also found Sri Shrikant Lagu of Mumbai. They both gave me a solid foundation in Gwalior gayaki and enhanced whatever I learned with Bodas ji. Then engineering started.....and love and life. But music had become a part of me and I knew for sure that it had to grow. Come 2002....I move to Phoenix Arizona and start Phoenix Gharana. It was harder for me to go to India now due to work commitments etc. Lagu ji had passed away and again I was back to square one. Come 2006, Padma tai comes to USA for a tour. I was lucky that she stayed at my house for a week and that’s where my talim under her started along with online classes with her for many years. This is where I learned how hard it is to learn online. I had a good foundation so I was able to cope but it is not the way to learn properly. I went to tai in Pune and had classes also. Today, at age 40 , I have developed my own style. I have put in my own thinking. I have also been fortunate to get some Agra style gayaki from Shubada tai. I have taken many things from these maestros and incorporated it with my own style to enhance it. Since the last few years I have started to perform heavily. I have met many musicians and I have deeply understood how the ICM world works. It is difficult and not for most. But if you have fighting spirit and a extraordinary will to succeed in this field, you will make it. Remember music picks you, you don’t pick music! Where will my music go next??? keep following me on FB☺️😬
