In honor of National School Breakfast Week, consider contributing to student nutrition by visiting d54foundation.org/donate today.

The District 54 Education Foundation has long been committed to the children from financially struggling families in School District 54. More than 2,800 District 54 students qualify for the federal free lunch program (22 percent of the district’s students); at several schools, almost 40 percent of students qualify for this program. To qualify, a family of four must earn less than $34,000 a year.

Since 2016, the District 54 Foundation has raised the funds to provide breakfast for these students at school, so that they could start the day ready to learn. Studies have demonstrated that nutrition affects students’ thinking skills, behavior and health, all factors that impact academic performance. Research has also found that access to nutrition, particularly breakfast, can enhance a student’s well-being. We can’t expect students to perform to their full potential if their basic needs are not being met. #NSBW21
