A Mighty Girl
Happy 18th birthday to Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai! Malala, who shared the Peace Prize last December with Indian child's rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi, survived an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012 and has been lauded worldwide for her on-going advocacy on behalf of girls and women.
For her birthday, Malala has asked her supporters around the world to take part in a special action. In a press conference this week, she said “Books are a better investment in our future than bullets. Books, not bullets, will pave the path toward peace and prosperity." She followed this with a blog post in which she cited statistics from a UNESCO report and noted: "If the whole world stopped spending money on the military for just 8 days, we could have the $39 billion needed to provide 12 years of free, quality education to every child on the planet."
Taking part in Malala's birthday action is simple -- she just asks that you "post a photo of yourself holding up your favorite book and share why YOU choose - and tell world leaders to fund the real weapon for change, education." Malala kicked off the effort by posting a picture of herself holding "The Diary of Anne Frank." She wrote that she selected this classic because it "inspires me to believe that every child deserves the right to dream, the right to learn and the right to live in peace."
You can share a birthday wish for Malala or post your photos in the comments below or on Twitter.
