Another tough year for UC applicants.....
dailycal.org Applications for undergraduate admission at UC campuses rose for the 10th consecutive year, including a record number of students applying to UC Berkeley.
Enjoyed catching up with colleagues at the IECA conference in San Diego. Also had a chance to visit the beautiful campus of University of San Diego.
[10/31/13] Yesterday had the opportunity to participate in a White House press call with Secretary of Education Arne Duncan - more on Obama's plan to rate colleges on outcome measures. Later in the day, I attended the Press Conference with the new UC President, Janet Napolitano. Priorities are for more support for undocumented students, grad students, and post-docs. Wants to build out Merced, and keep tuition from rising - all great goals!! She's only been in the job for a month, so we won't know of any major changes in the UC system for several months.
It's recruiting season! In the past two weeks TEP students met with representatives who visited Borel Place: Univ. of Alabama, Whittier College, University of the South: Sewanee, Johnson & Wales, Willamette, College of Charleston, Elon University. I met personally with reps from Gettysburg, College of Idaho, Marquette, and Lake Forest. Plus, a quick trip to Chicago and a beautiful visit to Northwestern! We'll have more visitors through November. Don't miss the Performing and Visual Arts College Fair this Sunday in SF with more than 300 colleges attending! Info is on the Nacac.org page.

weareiu.com Before applying to IU, I had never been to the Midwest. It seemed as though there was this stigma that I was setting myself up to attend college in the midst of a cornfield. Upon visiting campus for my first time last March, however, I immediately fell in love with the beauty Indiana has to offer!...
I am offering a full-length practice SAT on October 26 8:30 am (Saturday) in partnership with San Mateo HS and Princeton Review. Open to all high school students. RSVP to [email protected]. FREE EXAM - donation to the Dan Stone Scholarship Fund at SMHS would be appreciated and will be collected at the door.
Enjoyed interviewing Dr. Sally Springer, author of the 3rd edition of Admission Matters, for my Examiner.com column. This book is a great resource for parents and students who want to understand the college admission process. Easy to purchase on Amazon. Not much info, however, on Independent Counselors and what we do. For more info go to www.iecaonline.org to learn more about hiring an Independent Educational Consultant.
Participated in two informative press calls: with Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education and earlier today with Robert Morse of US News and World Report. Look for my article today on the 2014 College Rankings. The number one up and coming National University is Univ of Maryland, Baltimore County --a college I visited this Spring where I had the opportunity to meet the remarkable President Hrabowski. The photo that accompanies my article on US News Rankings was taken when I spent an afternoon observing a science class at UMBC.
Earlier this morning I had a phone meeting with a legislative aide to Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (D-CT) on FAFSA reform. Plus visits this week to Southern CA universities: UCLA, LMU, and Pepperdine. Tonight, Columbia College of Chicago visited with my students at Borel Place, San Mateo.
