Join us today at 4pm PST! Peter Hessler, an award-winning writer, journalist, and the author of 4 books about China will examine China's past, present, and future through its education system. The talk is based on his new book "Other Rivers: A Chinese Education."
In 1996, Peter Hessler was sent as a Peace Corps volunteer to Fuling, Sichuan, where most of his students were first-generation college attendees from large rural families with little parental guidance. In 2019, Hessler returned to teach at Sichuan University where he encountered a new generation of students from urban, middle-class, one-child families, intensely supported by ambitious parents, navigating China’s rise with a mix of irony and pragmatism. He also gained insight into the grueling pressures of the system through the experiences of his own daughters in a local school.
A reception will start at 4 p.m. and book sales, signing will follow the talk.
