Join UCSD professor Daphne Taylor-Garcia for a discussion of her new book The Existence of the Mixed Raced Damnés about mixed race Latinx peoples in the Americas and their experiences of race and colonialism. Connecting to contemporary debates about race and Latinx peoples, the book explores issues of class, race, and gender power relations by connecting an analysis of the lived experience with social structures. jasmine Sankofa double majored in Critical Gender Studies and Sociology and completed a minor in African American studies. Currently serving as the Aryeh Neier Fellow at Human Rights Watch and the American Civil Liberties Union. jasmine works in the US Program, focusing on human rights violations within the criminal justice system. Before joining Human Rights Watch, jasmine clerked for the Honorable Ronald L. Ellis of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, and was a Women's Law and Public Policy Fellow placed at a harm reduction agency serving persons engaged in s*x work and/or drug use in Washington, D.C. jasmine graduated from UCLA School of Law with specializations in Critical Race Studies and Public Interest Law and Policy. While in law school, jasmine was a student in the Youth & Justice and International Human Rights clinics, and interned at the Vera Institute of Justice, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services in South Africa, and the Los Angeles HIV Law and Policy Project.

On Mother’s Day, Let’s Not Forget US Moms Locked Away As Mother’s Day approaches, we should not forget an entire group of moms who are often ignored: the 214,000 women incarcerated in the United States, most of whom are moms with minor children.
