🚨 Exciting News! 🚨 UC San Diego Men's Club Water Polo head coach and alumnus Matt Ustaszewski ‘04 is heading to the Paris Olympics as an assistant coach for Team USA! 🇺🇸🤽‍♂️This marks his second Olympic coaching stint, having served as Team USA's video coach in Tokyo 2020.
Catch Team USA's first game against Italy on Sunday, July 28 in the Group A Preliminary Round!

Matt, who was a co-captain of UCSD’s fifth-ranked water polo team in 2003, is now in his third year as head coach. Last season, the Tritons shined in their Big West debut with a 17-13 record. 🌊💪

“It is a great honor to represent Team USA and UC San Diego at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The opportunity to work with such amazing athletes and incredible coaches is something I don’t take for granted. The dedication and commitment the coaching staff and the athletes have put in over the past 3 years has been very inspiring. We know this will be a much different environment than the Tokyo Olympics and we look forward to the challenges that await us in France. We hope to captivate and inspire the next generation of water polo players in the United States, and specifically for me, those in the San Diego community. We appreciate all the support back home as we prepare to compete against the best the world has to offer. Go USA and Go Tritons!” -Coach Matt Ustaszewski

The Opening Ceremonies in Paris are on Friday, July 26, with the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday, August 11. All water polo matches will be held at the Aquatics Centre, the only permanent venue built for the 2024 Games.

“I was actually born at UC San Diego Health, so you could say it was my destiny to receive my college degree from UC San Diego. I grew up with two older brothers, both UC San Diego graduates. We were obsessed with early Apple, computer history, and product design. I remember we would make our mom call us in sick from school so we could watch the Apple keynotes live. We deeply admired Steve Jobs and the engineering principles of Apple. They shaped who I am today and how I think.

I have always struggled with school. When I first started here, I was so overwhelmed. I was an Electrical Engineering major, struggling to adjust to the new environment. A few years ago, I realized this major just wasn’t for me. I decided to switch into Cognitive Science and nurture my skill for design and interaction. I could not have been happier with my decision.

I’ve spent nearly a decade at UC San Diego as an undergraduate, and I’ve found my community here. After joining DVC: The Deejays & Vinylphiles Club, I was exposed to the world of electronic music, live DJing, and event production. We recently held our final event of the year, securing an impressive venue downtown and selling out in just two weeks. My final DJ set was the culmination of seven years of hard work; I put so much effort and energy into it. When I went on stage and saw a massive crowd of people, all my friends, and family, it was one of my proudest moments. I owe everything to DVC. They are my family.

Seven years later, I feel like I have mastered the UCSD flow. I fit in here more than anywhere I’ve ever been. I plan to enter the electric vehicle space, and I wish to continue to DJ and perform visuals as a VJ. I’m proud to earn a degree that informs my passion for working at the intersection of technology and the arts to push the limits of audio and visual experiences.

I want to be kind and make life easier for those around me. Do things that feed your soul, pick a passion that serves as your north star, and chase it. We are here for a limited time; the meaning of life is to live a life of meaning.”

Unlike other robots in this space, CARMEN was developed by the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering research team in collaboration with clinicians, people with MCI, and their care partners. To the best of the researchers’ knowledge, CARMEN is also the only robot that teaches compensatory cognitive strategies to help improve memory and executive function. 🧠

“I was born in China and immigrated to the U.S. when I was ten. I am a first-generation college student; this experience instilled in me a deep appreciation for the opportunities that education provides. As I navigated the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, I found solace in the world of academics, particularly in the realms of mathematics and science.

My parents were not involved in my childhood; when I arrived in the U.S. to pursue a better education, I lived at my uncle’s house for three years. Criticisms from others on how I spoke and stumbled over words weren’t new to me, but they definitely weren’t easy to handle. Oftentimes, my fear of judgment led me to stay silent instead of putting myself out there. It was difficult for me to learn in school.

For the first 13 years of my life, I adapted to loneliness, thinking that the world had abandoned me. However, living by myself for the longest time built up my independence. I taught myself English and character development. I forged my own path and decided to live by the motif: ‘If I only get to live once, why am I afraid to explore?’ I would rather grow than to live with only what I was given. I’m not afraid to go after what I want, because what is there for me to lose?

I used the internet to self-study and improve my English skills. I would look up grammar rules and word pronunciations, practicing them in front of a mirror to say them correctly. I took the skills I learned to master English and applied them to other academic challenges, like learning how to code in Java. From these challenges, I learned that whether it was English, coding, math, or any other subject, taking small steps at a time will allow me to overcome any difficulties I face.

We have been given the precious gift of education, and it is now up to us to make it into a tool for positive change. Let us chase our dreams with the same courage and zest for life that defines the Triton spirit. For in the end, it is not the destination that matters most, but the journey itself.”

“Coming to America as a 7th grader was one big crash course. Learning English and acclimating to a new culture felt like I was constantly playing catch-up with my peers. Luckily, my inspiring parents raised me to believe I was capable of anything I set my mind to. My parents devoted their whole lives to me and left their home country to give me a better future, and in return, I just hope to make them proud.

UC San Diego had been my dream school since a very young age. I longed to spend my afternoons on the beach, but moving away from home and family felt like a daunting decision. My family gave me the courage to take the leap and coming to UCSD has been my greatest accomplishment. I have found an abundance of community and opportunity during my time as an undergrad. I prioritized cultivating new friendships and trying out clubs I would discover on flyers around campus. I got involved with the Armenian Student Association, UCSD Pre-Dental Society, became an academic tutor at Preuss School, and was an educational mentor at the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC).

For the ECEC, I wrote a book titled "I Have a Name", with the help of my best friend's illustrations, and gifted it to Room 8. The goal of the book was to support the social-emotional development and self-regulation of kids, so they can learn to utilize their words to communicate their feelings. The book discourages name-calling and teaches the importance of friendship and respect.

As I move onto the next chapter of my life, I hope to become an Autism Specialist and Dentist specializing in Orthodontics. Even when life gets tough, know that everything you need to beat those odds is within you right now. Don’t accept the box people might put you in, get up and do all it takes.”

“I am a Nigerian-American from Gilroy, California, and the middle child in a family of five. From a young age, I faced the harsh realities of racism, which, though painful, taught me that despite our world’s diverse cultures and perspectives, racial discrimination persists. However, these experiences did not instill hate in me; instead, they inspired me to respond with love and lead with compassion in every aspect of my life.

During my time at UC San Diego, I have had the pleasure of promoting diversity and encouraging the exploration of ideas in various roles. As President of the Minority Association of Pre-Med Students, I have worked to support underrepresented students in their academic and professional journeys. Additionally, I co-founded two organizations: the Nigerian Student Association, which showcases Nigerian culture and talent, and Health, Education, and Literacy, which aims to educate the general population on identifying misinformation and conducting effective research. Co-founding the Nigerian Student Association and organizing UC San Diego’s first-ever Nigerian culture show remain some of my proudest accomplishments. I hope this community continues to provide students with the opportunity and space to celebrate their Nigerian heritage for years to come.

If I could offer every Triton one piece of advice, it would be to embrace new opportunities by saying yes as often as possible. We often limit ourselves by not taking chances on new experiences and paths. Opening yourself to new events and opportunities broadens your network and connects you with people who can help you grow and discover your true self. As I continue my education in medicine, I aim to continue to get out of my comfort zone and pursue new adventures.”
