To be mentally strong to compete under pressure is one thing, but to have the courage and strength to pull out on the biggest stage because that is what is best for you is a completely different thing. Hopefully this is another step in more athletes being open about their mental wellness and health. Athletes are humans and there is more to life than just the sports they play.

The Nashville Predators prospect Luke Prokop became the first player under an NHL contact to come out as gay. He talks about being able to live his authentic life and being able to bring his whole self to the rink which will improve his chances of making his dreams a reality. This is huge, when we have to hide part of ourselves we spend energy and focus on doing so, this limits what we can then bring to our performance. When we free ourself to be our true selves we also free ourselves to go out and give everything we have to our performance and to life. #hockeyisforeveryone

Mental toughness doesn’t just come in big moments, it is in quiet daily moments where we build the foundation. You can’t have the “loud” mental toughness without the “quiet” mental toughness that comes more from focusing on your mental well-being and being disciplined on a daily basis. It comes from the choices you make each day. Your actions create the type of person and performer you are.

I have said this many times. Self discovery is so important and a never ending journey. Take an interest in getting to know who you are. Often people just see the mental side of performance being mental skills like visualization or goal setting. Elite athletes generally have a good foundation of mental skills, but there is more to dig into. To access your potential requires more than just mental skills.

It is important to learn to see the good and the mistakes to the same degree. Being even keel is an important high performance skill set. Same with your self talk. It is important to find a process and system to help you assess your performance, take what you need from it and move on. This is just as important for looking at both what you did well and what you need to improve on.

The path will be filled with discomfort, uncertainty and pain. This is a guarantee. No one said it would be easy, it is the challenge and difficulty of going after your dream that is apart of what makes the journey worth it. This is huge and something we work on with clients. Emotional literacy is important so that we can properly label and acknowledge an emotion. One part is the practice of doing this and then it is also good to learn more about what core emotions there are so that with time we might find words to best describe how we feel.

The sweet spot is to stay between confident and capable. If you let confidence lead to becoming comfortable it is easy to get complacent and then catastrophe happens. I see this a lot the downward slide. Stay humble, and hungry.

One of the ways you become flexible is surrendering to the fact that you don’t have control over the outcome or how it often looks. You can control your behavior, attitude, effort, and thoughts but that’s it. Prepare as best you can and then let go and be present in each moment. This is where you access all that you have at your disposal.
