On March 7th, we had a great Toastmaster meeting. Kevin gave his fifth speech from his competent communicator and we had two table topic winners!

Kevin's fifth speech titled "Ball is Life" was about how the sport of basketball influenced his views on life. His varsity coach once told him, "Basketball doesn't build character, it defines it." Kevin also included a demonstration of proper basketball shooting form so everyone could improve their techniques on the quart.

Our two table topic winners were Nikki and Maxfield.

Nikki shared with us how she dealt with the difficult decision to quit the best job she ever had. She explained that due to the fact that she was becoming so busy in life, she was missing out on seeing her family. So she adjusted her priorities to spend more time with the people she cares about.

Maxfield gave a humorous explanation for a picture of Joe Biden. The picture showed the White House where Joe Biden was starring sorrowfully out off a window. Maxfield made up a story that it was Joe Biden's last day as Vice President and Obama decided to throw a party for Joe to cheer him up.

We hope to see everyone again tomorrow for our last meeting of the quarter! Guests are always welcome!

We've had two wonderful toastmasters meetings these last few weeks!

On February 21st, Maxfield completed his 3rd pathways speech titled "Great Leadership." He shared with the audience that one component of being an effective leader is being a good listener. Maxfield also won table topics.

On February 28th, Mike completed his fourth pathways speech and Oscar won table topics.

Congratulations to everyone! We hope to see you all again this Wednesday at 4pm.

Hello everyone! Last week we had another wonderful Toastmasters meeting. We had two prepared speakers, Mike and Oscar, followed by Valentine's day themed table topics.

Our first prepared speaker, Mike, gave his second pathways speech titled “3 Percent.” He stated that only 3% of people actually write down their goals. His advice was that in order to achieve our goals we must write them down, keep ourselves accountable by telling other people our goals, and to be courageous enough to set big goals. A good way to start is to write down 100 goals and rank them in order of importance. Mike says we should keep our eyes open for new opportunities and be ready to achieve our goals because “luck is when opportunity meets preparedness.”

Our second prepared speaker, Oscar, gave his first pathways speech titled “My Pathway.” He shared with us the pathways in life his mother taught him at a young age: humanity and survival, respect, prayer and trust, trusting himself, having faith in himself, love and family, and helping others. One example Oscar gave of how his mother taught him humanity and survival was when his mother once bought food for children when she was struggling herself. She told Oscar, “Siempre puede ser mejor.” meaning that it can always be better.

Mike was the winner of table topics. If he were given Cupid’s bow and arrow, instead of using it to make two people fall in love, he would use the power to make his 7 year old daughter fall out of love with Oscar’s 6 year old boy. Since Mike and Oscar are coworkers and good friends, the children spend a lot of time around one another. They get excited to see each other the same way a husband and wife would. Mike once found them sitting side by side watching movies on an ipad the same way an old married couple would. Talk about young love!

We hope you can make it to our next meeting this Wednesday at 4pm in the SMSU.

Toastmasters at csusb had a great meeting last Wednesday! Maxfield gave his second pathways speech and we had a three way tie during table topics.

During his pathways speech "Your Password and You," Maxfield informed us about how easy it is for someone to hack into our personal information if our passwords are too short. So he shared how to create a strong and secure password. He advised that a password should be at least 14-15 characters long for the majority of our accounts and at least 20 characters long for more important information such as bank accounts.

Our three table topics winners were Maxfield, Mike, and Emily!

During table topics, Maxfield told the audience about the time his father went to Oklahoma and swam in a swamp filled with aligator-like creatures. After swimming in the swamp, he realized he was covered in bugs. Because of his father's adventure, Maxfield desires to visit his extended family in Oklahoma and create his own adventures there.

Mike told us that if he were given the power to create his own planet, he would instead find it more fascinating to be able to stick around and see where planet earth is heading. He explained that scientists believe earth will be completely underwater in the distant future. As a result, life would have to find a new way to exist in this underwater planet.

Emily assured the audience that her and her step brother were "little angels" as children. One day, however, they accidentally lit their backyard on fire while playing with a box of matches they found. Thankfully their parents got home in time to put the fire out. She said it was a lesson she'll never forget.

We hope to see you all this Wednesday for another great meeting!

Toastmasters at CSUSB had another great meeting today with prepared speeches from Omak and Kevin Alanis, and Mike won this week’s Table Topics!

Omak’s first Pathways speech was entitled, “Omak,” and his speech was about his journey traveling to the United States from his home island, which his says can fit inside California. During the summer of 2014, Omak was “Fresh off the boat,” and his brother took him to IHOP, and he was amazed from the variety of pancakes they offered.

In 2015, Omak finished his first year of community college, and later transferred to CSUSB. He admitted when he first arrived at CSUSB, he didn’t talk much his first year. But now, he has joined Toastmasters, has more friends, and has grown a lot as a person, but still wants to keep progressing.

Omak said when he goes back home, people are going to be proud of what he has become.

Our second speaker was Kevin, and his fourth Competent Communicator speech was entitled, “Sell and be Sold,” and his speech was about different communication styles. Like an emotive style, which means higher sociability, and an example would be TV host Jimmy Fallon.

A directive communication style is high dominance, serious attitude, and control of situations. An example would be politician Hillary Clinton. Low dominance is a cautious and reserved person, which would be politician Paul Ryan.

The information Kevin shared gave the audience an insight of how extrovert and introvert communication styles differ from one another. Kevin said everybody is different, and it takes time to communicate with sells people.

Congratulations to Mike for winning this week’s Table Topics!

Mike’s speech was about the first day he did public speaking in the workplace in 2010, and he experienced the worst anxiety of his life, because on the way to the office, he puked at a gas station. The next day at work, Mike noticed his shirt smelled like puke, because he accidently wore the same shirt.

We had another great meeting this week and hope to see you all next Wednesday!

Toastmasters at CSUSB had another great meeting today with new members, Maxfield and Mike completing their first speeches, which is “The Ice Breaker.”

Maxfield’s speech was entitled,” From Shy to Fly,” and his speech was about as a kid, his Mother was heavy into public speaking, but he wasn’t interested and always had his headphones on every time he was around it.

In Jr college, he took a public speaking class, and he was one of the few who enjoyed it. It was a slow progression, but eventually, he became a better public speaker. Maxfield joined Toastmasters to become an even better public speaker.

Maxfield is interested in cyber security, and a lot of guys in information tech get a bad rap when it comes to public speaking, but he wants to break the stereotype that surrounds guys in this field. He is also graduating from CSUSB soon, and is looking forward to meeting all the Toastmaster speech requirements.

Our second speaker was Mike and his speech was entitled, “Mini Retirement,” and his speech was about when he grew up in Ohio with his siblings, and his parents were strict. He said growing up was like living in N**i Germany, because he couldn’t play video games, drink soda, eat candy, etc.

Mike went to Ohio State University, and Hawaii University, but he eventually dropped out of school to become a beach bum, and a scuba diving instructor. When Mike dropped out of school, his parents completely cut him off.

Times were rough because Mike lived in a shack that was $500 a month with no running water, and he had to use the public beach restrooms, but he explained these were the best days of his life. 10 years later, he is proud of what he has become, because he has two kids, businesses and has no time to take off.

Mike insisted it’s important to take time off and explore yourself.

Congratulations to Maxfield and Darrell for winning this week’s Table Topics!

Maxfield’s speech was about going back in history to witness Julius Caesar and his victorious army walk the streets of Rome. He wanted to witness how the Romans would party after winning a war.

Darrell’s speech was about if he could go back in time, he would go back to high school and focus on himself, instead of wasting time, and having a plan of what to do in life.

Toastmasters at CSUSB’s next meeting will be next Wednesday, Jan. 31st.

Hope to see you all there!
