We are all aware that Asians and those of Asian descent have become the victims of increased racist attacks. In supporting my students, colleagues, and friends, I recognize that white supremacy, injustice, and systemic racism perpetuate such hate crimes towards Asians and Asian Americans. Speaking out against such behavior, cultivating antiracist perspectives, and developing administrators and school leaders with a mindset that affirms equity and humanism is my ongoing goal as an educator. What is yours? 🧐

As we go through the last week of History Month. I would like to take some time to honor the legend Eric Jerome Dicky.
Eric, who would have thought after graduating from G.W. Carver HS that we'd reconnect at a UCLA-Memphis State basketball game? We were just two kids from the Kansas-Riverview-Carver-Shady Grove MBC 'hood hanging out and learning our way around Los Angeles. You in your new, blue MR2. Us on our way to Vegas. Me graduating with a Master's. You with a silly, playful grin and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Forever connected through life's journey as family and friends. Thank you for sharing your life, your laughter, your words. You made us proud. We honor you!

Teachers come in all forms. At G.W. Carver High School in Memphis, we were blessed with many who changed our lives in the struggle for civil rights. Such was Mr. George Hunt. Mr. Hunt was our art teacher at G.W. Carver High School in the 1970's. His work is known throughout the country as he focused his paintings on memories of growing up in the South. He was the "official artist" of 2003's "Year of the Blues," and in 1977, painted "The Little Rock Nine" -to honor the nine students who integrated Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. Continuing to honor "The Little Rock Nine, the U.S. Postal Service used the painting as a stamp in recognizing civil rights accomplishments. Thank you Mr. Hunt for using your talents to honor those who were on the front lines of fighting for your students, for all of us. We appreciate you.
