Are your services only available to moms of children with speech and language delays? Are your services available to dads of children with speech and language delays?
Think you can't practice communication during a Dance Party??

Think again!

Look at that connection😍

Baby is engaged, responding and most of all having fun!.

Connection is the foundation for communication❤️
I would like to hear your thoughts about something I have been thinking of for a while. I feel like doctors and all other experts in child health and development are now trying to diagnose every child with a disorder, etc. as if all the children have to be tagged and categorized in a specific way. Don't get me wrong; I'm not conservative and I can describe myself as a really open-minded person but I sometimes feel a little paranoid about all these disorders, issues, skills, which we started to hear for the first time maybe only a decade ago. In the past, a child may be just naughty, clever and active whereas he/she has to be hyperactive now. Another one is put somewhere in the spectrum because he/she does not respond to his/her name at the age of 2. There are countless examples like these. So, what do you think about it? Do you agree with me that it is a little exaggerated?

I coach moms to make the most of daily interactions to develop early communication skills. Connection and relationships are the key to unlocking a communication...and no one has a connection with your child like you.

Make these moments count…

There’s a misconception that we need to sit on the floor or at a table with flash cards or games in order to work on speech and language skills.

But the reality is that practicing communication skills can happen anytime, especially during moments like this…when something captures the curiosity of the child.

Curiosity is an intrinsic desire to know more. So when we find our kids being curious, let’s pour into them.

Take this scenario for example, for a child at a pre- or non-verbal level, model ooh, aah, ohh, sighs of surprise and facial expressions.

Kids who are using words can learn new vocabulary.

Point out locations like “on, up, behind, under” etc.

Ask questions “what, where, why”.

When we can connect with a child in their curiosity, the opportunity to build up skills presents itself. Just connect, show genuine interest and simplify your language to meet your child’s level and you’ll be subtly increasing their ability to communicate.

When I meet moms who have “been there” and tell them about the coaching that I do, they say something along the lines of:

“I wish I knew you when my child was going through therapy.”

“I really could’ve used your help.”

“Where were you when my child was struggling?”

That hits straight to my heart.

I’ve heard the stories and met the moms of children who are on the same journey you are.

I know it’s hard.

And I know you could use someone on your side, supporting you and teaching you how to discover your unique ability to reach your child and improve communication.

I wish I could’ve been there for those moms back then, but I’m so glad to be here for you now.

Oh my goodness…so good👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you Mona Delahooke, Ph.D.

Every day across the world, autistic children are led away from their natural inclinations by professionals charged with their care and support, with major implications to their self-concept and feelings of inherent acceptance/safety. In my opinion, we should treat difficulties for all children as they arise. If there's emotional or physical pain, we locate and compassionately treat, if there's difficulty communicating, we support communication. Treating autistic "behaviors" on the surface has major implications that psychology and education hasn't even started to address. #Beyondbehaviors #neurodiversity #education #specialeducation #autism #autismacceptance #paradigmshift #flipthenarrative #inclusion #childpsychology #earlyintervention #specialneedsparenting

Thoughts?

Knowing what you do about Floortime, would you change them? How would you change them? Discuss!

Yes! 💯

Love is not just a feeling; it is experienced by our actions. We must leave space for our children to experience our unconditional love in the small everyday moments of connection, acceptance, compassion, and forgiveness.

I’ll be collaborating with my friend, Brenda McSween, parenting and sleep expert (Parenting Foundations) and Camille Joy, podcaster and creator of The Real Moms Club.

We’ll be talking about behavior and how to figure out what’s really going on.

🧸Why is my child acting this way? Tuesday, June 15 at 1:00pm MDT with Brenda McSween, Camille Joy, Cindy Ramos. In this room we will be talking about our child’s behaviour. Bring your questions and we will talk them through. Let’s figure out what could be the root cause.

In order for a child to understand something, they must experience it.

For example, having the experience of touching a banana, holding it, smelling it, peeling it and tasting it gives the spoken word "banana" richer meaning.

Or saying action words such as "eat, drink, run, jump" as the child is enjoying doing those things helps them to make sense of what they're doing and hearing.

This type of exposure to language through shared experiences is the most effective way to build up communication skills.

What experiences will you share your little one today?

Who we are to our children is much more important than our words. It's the way our eyes light up, it is in the softness when we listen to them, the warmth after a difficult day. It's the energy and love we put into a relationship that is the greatest teacher.

05/25/2021

Did you know that 93% of communication is non-verbal?

That tells us that the ability to use non-verbal communication is more important than the spoken word!

In fact, there are "pre-linguistic skills" that should be mastered before we should even expect our children to use words.

Can he connect?
Can she engage?
React to the environment?
Share attention?
Follow simple directions?
Vocalize with purpose?
Initiate interactions?
Point or wave?

If you think that your child has difficulty with non-verbal communication, start there!

If you need guidance and support, message me to find out about coaching.

Support a child’s use of imagination by showing interest and wonder at what they have to share.

How? Ask questions, use body language and facial expressions that express you want to know more, change your tone to convey intrigue.

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand."

Let them PLAY

It’s essential.

Tantrums/meltdowns are stress responses and there can be a variety of causes.

The intention of the behavior is NOT to “misbehave-be defiant-not listen-be bad”.

The child is struggling.

The key to overcoming “challenging behaviors” is to address the root cause of the behavior.

Why is this important to communication?

Because a child must be in a regulated state in order to take in information, process it and respond.

Every Parent is Capable

Hey everyone! Thank you for visiting my page. A little about me and why I launched The Capable Parent...

My name is Cindy Ramos and I am Christ follower, a wife to a wonderful husband and a mom to three amazing and wild kiddos. I also hold a Assistant Speech Language Pathologist license. This page was created after an idea that God laid upon my heart over a year ago. When my kids and I were out and about at parks, libraries, playdates, etc., I often met moms of children of speech and language delays. They always had so many questions and were so eager to learn more of the small bits of advice and tips I had to offer. This showed me what a great need parents have in seeking ways to help their children on their journey to becoming more effective communicators.

My prayer is that The Capable Parent is the guidance you need...that you realize that you play such a huge role in your child’s progress toward their goals...and that You Are Able to do this. You have been gifted that child...won’t the One who gifted him/her also provide you with the Wisdom, Strength, Patience, Endurance and most importantly Love you need to meet your child’s needs? Who best to encourage, educate and engage a child than a Parent...the one who is Always There.
