UTHSCSA-Community Pediatrics

Established in 1988 to provide comprehensive services to HIV-infected children, the Division of Community Pediatrics consists of a staff of over 40 professionals, organized into multi-disciplinary teams engaged in the provision of health care and support services to children and families living with HIV/AIDS, as well as children, adolescents and families in community settings experiencing problems with substance abuse, violence, and adolescent pregnancy.

TEACH (Targeting Environmental Aspects of Children's Health): The primary goal of TEACH is to identify and educate children and families on environmental hazards in the home that can potentially expose them to lead and known asthma triggers. Funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Partners including SAMHD, South Central AHEC, UHS, City of San Antonio.

Project SUPPORT (Evaluator): The purpose of Project SUPPORT is to identify and/or treat childhood and adolescent behavioral and emotional problems within the primary care setting. Funded by HB15 Texas Department of State Health Services.

Keeping it Real (Evaluator): Providing ACRA/ACC treatment and strength-based recovery coaching to enhance substance abuse treatment for adolescents in drug court. Funded by SAMHSA-CSAT. Partners include Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department, Family Service Association of San Antonio, Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans.

South Texas Family AIDS Network: Network of agencies that provide family centered primary medical care, research and clinical trials, case management services, mental health and substance abuse counseling , HIV testing and counseling, case finding/outreach, support groups and training. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Over 10 partners throughout South Texas.

Project HOPE (Evaluator): To provide eligible homeless women with housing assistance, intensive case management and access to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Funded by SAMHSA-CSAT. Partners include Hope Action Care, El Centro del Barrio/Centro Med and Mujeres Unidas, Inc.,

Salud y Vida (Evaluator): Providing intensive family therapy, substance abuse counseling/treatment, case management and comprehensive risk reduction services with the goal of reducing substance use and HIV risk among adolescents. Funded by SAHMSA. Partnering with Family Service Association of San Antonio.

Positive Choices: Providing evidence-based, family-focused, substance abuse treatment, wrap around services, assessment, and strength-based case management to those involved in the juvenile drug court system. Funded by SAMHSA-CSAT. Partners include Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department adn Family Service Association of San Antonio.

Women's HEART: Enhance access, retention and re-linkage to quality HIV care for women of color. Funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration. Partners include UHS-FFACTS Clinic and the Alamo Area Resource Center.

Project S-START (Evaluator): Develop and implement a comprehensive, culturally competent, SBIRT curriculum which is centered upon the evidence-based SBIRT model of screening, brief intervention, referral and treatment for substance use. funded by SAMHSA-CSAT. Partners include UTHSCSA Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Medicine, OB-GYN and Surgery, Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Hood, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, Edinburgh Regional Area Health Center, and McAllen Family Medicine.

Project HOPE (Capacity Building Initiative, Evaluator): Utilize the Strategic Prevention Framework to reduce substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors among 18 to 24 year olds in our community through community awareness and direct prevention services. Funded by SAMHSA-CSAP. Partners include San Antonio Fighting Back and BEAT AIDS.

Teen Reach: Reduce the prevalence of substance use and HIV risk among minority adolescent attending one of three alternative high schools in San Antonio, TX. Funded by SAMHSA-CSAP. Partners include Por Vida Academy, George Gervin Center and Healy Murphy Alternative High School.

Project FATE (Female Awarness Through Education): Provide an evidence-based HIV/AIDS prevention intervention to heterosexual Hispanic and African American women in Bexar County, TX. Funded by the Texas Department of State Health Services. Over 25 community partners.

Families RISE (Evaluator): To promote the optimal development and actualization of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families by assisting and empowering them in their efforts to achieve independence, productivity, integration and inclusion. Funded by DHHS Adminsitration of Children and Families. Partners include Respite Care of San Antonio, Inc. (PI), Any Baby Can of San Antonio, Inc., and the Brighton Center, Inc.
