We demand life should be fair, and that things should fall in our favor. When it isn’t, we rage against undesirable results and keep a running tally of how, when, and by who we have been screwed. This amplifies the belief that unforeseen powers and the dark arts are out to get us. They’re not. We use other people’s actions to prove we are treated unfairly. The reality being that most people are looking out for themselves and don’t know we are there. It is really just your habit of explaining your experiences yourself as unfair that is that problem.

If unfairness is a bee in your bonnet, use mindfulness to be aware of the situation without assessing it. Tell yourself life isn’t fair or unfair, it just is.

Through the fallacy of external control, we believe we are at the mercy of fate, karma, and gypsy curses. It’s always someone or something else’s fault that we are stuck where we are, or why we can’t get ahead.

The fallacy of internal control has us assuming responsibility for the feelings of everyone and everything around us. For example, “Why aren’t you happy? Is it because of something I did?”

We are all responsible for our own junk, our own happiness, and our own direction. Sometimes you are controlled by external forces. You have to go to work, pay taxes and obey the laws, of course. If you tell yourself “the man,” other people, or your situation are holding you back, then your false narrative is in control of your trajectory.

To change that, override the bu****it story you tell yourself and build a plan. The steps you take toward your plan control your trajectory.

Catastrophising is the habit of thinking the worst about things. You assess what has happened or imagine the potential worst-case scenarios that might happen as catastrophic. This is a holdover from a time where a rustle in the bushes meant danger. If we made a misstep, whatever was in those bushes might get us. We still unconsciously function on this misstep to catastrophe scale. The brain gives most of its attention to scanning the horizon for potential threats. Modern day rustles in the bushes are things like comparison to others, fear of failure, and rejection.

By catastrophizing, you blow experiences out of proportion, no matter how small or untrue. You unconsciously apply high stakes consequences in minor things. What ifs swirl in your head, and you create anxiety based on your imagination. Like many of the cognitive distortions, when you catastrophize, you unconsciously make things bad by filtering out everything except what confirms your faulty beliefs. Instead of “This will be awful,” tell yourself, “I am ok now.”

Your sacrifices, self-denial, and the under-appreciation of those around should earn some sort of relational points, right? It would be nice if the good things we do were being monitored by some universal force, and we were to be rewarded for all we do. This isn’t the case, so folks who are invested in the reward fallacy wait for a payoff that isn’t going to come. They spin out and build resentment towards the people and situations they feel they have sacrificed for. Many people who call themselves “people pleasers” fall into this cognitive distortion. If you want, do cool stuff for other folks because it’s a good thing to do. Don’t do stuff for other folks because you think being self-sacrificial makes you valuable or that other people will reciprocate your actions.

The cognitive distortion of blaming is simple. You are stuck because other people, systems, or situations are responsible for your lot in life.

The blamer thinks, if only this person, situation, or system weren’t keeping me down, then I would be a raging success.
The CD of blaming supports a non-autonomous mindset.

Autonomy is the belief that behaviors and thoughts are our own and that we are responsible for our success. Someone who is non-autonomous is floating in the middle of the ocean on a life raft. They are at the mercy of the waves, the wind, and the sun. They bob without direction or control, hoping something good happens, but don’t feel capable of controlling how things turn out.
Someone with autonomy might also be in a life raft in the middle of the ocean, but with a motor attached. The elements affect them, too, but they know their thoughts, actions, and behaviors influence their direction and move them where they choose to be.

Sometimes obstacles are the fault of our sticking points, other, or our situation, but there is always a way through, over, or around them. By exploring options, you sn**ch control from external sources and become internally controlled. When you catch yourself blaming an external force for your situation, flip it. Ask yourself, what can I do, in the present, to get where I want to be.

Everything is connected to you, about you, or because of you, am I right? If a friend finds a hair in their honey glazed chicken at Chili’s, it’s your fault because you picked the restaurant. You might wonder what you have done to offend the neighbor because they ignored your friendly wave. The personalizer is the cause of bad things that happen that they aren’t responsible for. No matter how hard you try to make it fit, it is rarely about you. Most people are locked in their own heads, making it about them, just like you. If this rings a bell for you, next time you straining to make yourself the cause of something bad, ask yourself, “Is there another probable explanation for what’s happening.” Sometimes exploring a thought that is opposite of your cognitive distortion will break the habit loop, even if you don’t believe it. If you can challenge the habitual thought routinely, you get might find a better way to think.
