ProfessorNeka is 36 years old, and she is the Founder and Director of Citizenship 101. She is also a Writer and a Former Professor of Political Science and African American Studies.

I’m ProfessorNeka, and I started Citizenship101.info to offer a political education to everyday folks. It’s one professor’s attempt to talk to the American people about politics the same way that I would talk to my friends and family members: with a lot of explaining along the way, a little bit of humor, and nothing but the best intentions. [11/05/18]   ELECTIONS ALERT: If you live in Dorchester County, SC, and you are voting via a paper absentee ballot in the Midterm Elections, YOUR BALLOT MUST BE RECEIVED AT 201 Johnston Street, St. George, SC 29477 BY TOMORROW NIGHT AT 7PM IN ORDER FOR YOUR VOTE TO BE COUNTED.

I recently moved to this county and was unsure about the absentee ballot rules. Many of this county’s other services can be carried out in Summerville, which is the largest city in the county and is 40 minutes away from the elections office in St. George. I approached an official in the Sheriff’s Office parking lot in Summerville this morning to see if my ballot could be submitted there to save me the drive. He told me that absentee votes should have been mailed back a week ago and I was probably too late. He told me I may be able to drive it to St. George, but seemed doubtful and gave me no address and no information about who to contact to find out.

I am a Professor of Political Science and a former elections worker in Charleston County, so I knew enough to drive the 40 minutes to St. George to submit my ballot despite what that man told me. However, anyone else would likely have been discouraged and decided not to vote at all.

All government officials should have the correct information about voting and elections in their area. If they don’t, it should be their responsibility to direct voters to sources of legitimate information, not misdirect or discourage them. I do not believe this man had any malicious intent, but his misinformation is harmful to voters all the same. Dorchester County, please fix this.

It's official! I'm taking a group of students to Jamaica this summer to study Reggae and Hip-Hop music! Yay! I LOVE my job!

[08/23/18]   Finished the first day of all of my classes! I have 150 young minds to blow this semester!
