The authority for such an education comes from God's command that children be taught to love God and place Him first in their lives and from the fact that parents are responsible for the total education and training of their children. At your request, SBCS will become a partner in giving this education. Southside Baptist Christian School is an educational organization that offers formal academic training for students in kindergarten through grade 12. SBCS is a fully accredited K-12 educational institution through the Association of Christian Teachers and Schools (ACTS) which is an authorized accrediting body of the Virginia Council for Private Education (VCPE) and the Virginia Department of Education. SBCS is nationally accredited through the National Council for Private School Accreditation. SBCS operates on an 8-hour school days with elementary students receiving instruction in core subjects of math, English, social studies, science and Bible. Additional instruction is provided in reading, writing, music, art, drama, business and foreign language. Middle and high school students receive instruction in core subjects of math, English, social studies, science, and Bible. Additional instruction is provided in computers, business, foreign languages, choir, band, Microsoft Office, keyboarding, creative writing as well as math and science labs. HISTORY

The year was 1987 and Dr. Lonnie S. Stinson, the Pastor and Founder of Emmaus Road Baptist Church in Garysburg, North Carolina was ready to depart to the land that God had shown to him - Richmond, Virginia. It was a step of faith, a sincere belief in a God who promised that wherever He would lead, He would feed and where He would guide, He would certainly provide. In 1989, it became clear that the faithful, 25-member congregation was in need of a bigger facility. Dr. Stinson held firmly to the belief that "Where there is no vision, the people perish." They did not have much, but they had an unshakable faith in a God whose hand of provision could be clearly seen. In five short years the tiny congregation had also learned that the needs of this church were met on their knees. In 1992, burdened to meet the need of working parents with school-age children in the community, Dr. and Mrs. Stinson started the Community Action Program of Southside or CAPS Program as it came to be called. The CAPS Program was only one example of the ministries implemented by Dr. and Mrs. Stinson to meet the needs of the families and communities served by Southside Baptist Temple. Southside was a busy church - "... always abounding in the work of the Lord ...." There were ministries to meet the needs of everyone from the youngest infant in the nursery to the senior saints. Dr. Stinson was determined to let the community know that SBT was truly "The Ministry That Cares!"

In the fall of 1999, Dr. & Mrs. Stinson were led of God to open a school that would uphold the testimony of Christ while providing the best of the best in quality, Christian education. So with another leap of faith, Southside Baptist Christian School opened its doors to welcome the first 110 students ranging from K4 through the 12th grade! Since that special day in August of 1999, Dr. & Mrs. Stinson have not looked back. With the support of the SBM family as well as a dedicated faculty and staff, Southside Baptist Christian School has been blessed beyond measure...GOD IS STILL DOING GREAT THINGS! MISSION & PURPOSE

The objective of a quality, Christian education is outlined very clearly in Deuteronomy 6:5-7. In addition, God's Word gives us another purpose in Proverbs 22:6..."Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." A Christian school is an extension of the Christian home in training young people for time and eternity in a Christian environment. The SBCS staff will work closely with parents for the purpose of training the "WHOLE CHILD". Attendance at SBCS is a privilege, not a right. The goals of SBCS are not to REFORM but toTRAIN Christian youth and BUILD character in the highest principles of...Christian Leadership, Self-discipline, Individual Responsibility, Personal Integrity, and Good Citizenship

Along with teaching truth, schooling must also include training in how to use the truth, taking into account a student's abilities and interests. Students of SBCS will not only learn "HOW TO MAKE A LIVING...but HOW TO LIVE!"
PHILOSOPHY & INTENT

The purpose of Christian education is to direct the process of a child's development toward God's objective for man - godliness in character and action. Without a willing student, Christian education cannot carry out its purpose. Carnal attitudes and actions will hinder or totally halt any type of character building or growth. SBCS students are challenged to TRULY know God and to imitate Him in their character and in their works. Because the purpose of Christian education is the development of Christlikeness in our students, the Bible is the center of the Christian school curriculum. SBCS believes that Christian parents have a Biblical mandate to educate their children in their homes as well as their churches. 100% parental support is paramount to students' success. Parents are expected to reinforce the educational process - homework, attendance, punctuality, discipline and standards of conduct. In the curriculum, students are taught from a Christian worldview. The teaching of the Bible and the principles of the Word are part of every subject in every classroom. Textbooks are Christian-based as well as educationally sound. In the hiring of teachers, teachers must be rooted and grounded in the Word, able to discern truth from error. They are called to teach and committed to the calling to train the children in the admonition of the Lord. The Word is living in the teachers, and they become the living curriculum. In the physical plant, this extends itself to the physical care of the students and staff. The Word is posted as a reminder to every student and staff member of the prominence and necessity of this instruction. The student body consists of those who are seeking to know God and His directions for their lives. They are learning about their part in fulfilling the Great Commission. (Matt. 28:18-20)
