Virtual Virginia partnered with the Virginia Society for Technology in Education () and Canvas LMS () to offer a free, one-day conference for public school educators in Virginia. The conference will highlight what Virginia teachers and leaders are doing to improve instruction and create blended learning experiences that are meaningful and engaging for learners throughout the Commonwealth. Set for Feb. 5, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., register at https://www.virtualvirginia.org/blend22/.
You didn’t think we’d let a day all about inspiration pass without talking about teachers, did you?! We’re inspired every day by hard working, creative, generous teachers sparking deep and joyful learning for all students in their classrooms.

Not every educator spends their days in the K-12 classroom. We’re also inspired by educators like Kim Wilkens, who uses her platform as a tech activist, Tech-Girls founder, and PhD student to change education for the better. As she studies computer science education and leadership at the UVA School of Education & Human Development, Kim is researching and sharing the most effective ways to create equitable CS learning experiences for all students.

Kim and the made their way to the Virginia Society for Technology in Education conference this week for a session on Equitable CS Teaching Strategies. Participants got hands-on with inclusive strategies for teaching robotics! Learn more here: https://sites.google.com/virginia.edu/cecse
- Dr. Karen Richardson, Executive Director of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education and Lead of the State Alliance is the recipient of the 2021 SETDA Candice Dodson Influencer Award. Congrats the great Karen!

The school closure situation is ripe with opportunity to explore facets of online and distance learning. We could really begin to rethink the delivery models and begin to consider what modern digital age learning could look like. There are some that will step up and seize the opportunities that are presented during this time of uncertainty. Those innovators and early adopters are always leading the way and are comfortable enough to take the risk of failing in order to learn more about the craft, more about themselves and more about their students. There will be many that make great strides toward redefinition and transformation.

Sadly, there are also many teachers out there that are anxious, concerned, stressed out about what this might mean for them. For them, being disconnected from their students, their teammates and the comfortable and known environs of 'school' will be extremely challenging. It will be emotionally difficult, to say the least, and that hasn't even taken into consideration fretting over the loss of instructional time at the onset of the spring high stakes testing windows that are soon to begin for most school districts.

Thankfully, many in the VSTE community are stepping forward to offer support for remote learning opportunities during the school closures due to COVID19. This community exists to help teachers, especially those that might struggle to make the transition to teaching from a distance AND particularly those coaches that will support teachers during the shift. We can and should all band together and grow together.

So, please, post your thoughts, ask for resources, submit your ideas and questions. We are all going to have to face the impact of this pandemic so we might as well accept the challenge and share the burden. Perhaps, we will push ourselves to learn something about our community, grow past our fears, and discover things about teaching and learning that we did not fully realize before the COVID19 crisis.

Wash your hands, keep your wits about you and know you are not alone.
A very helpful resource for COVID-19 closings:
The current school closure situation is ripe with the opportunity to explore facets of online and distance learning. We could really begin to rethink the delivery models and begin to consider what modern digital age learning could look like. For them, being disconnected from their students, their teammates and the comfortable and known environs of 'school' will be extremely challenging. It will be emotionally difficult to say the least and that hasn't even taken into consideration fretting over the loss of instructional time at the onset of the spring high stakes testing windows that are soon to begin for most school districts.

Thankfully, many in the VSTE community are stepping forward to offer support to meet the demand of the remote learning challenge we all face. This community exists to help teachers especially those that might struggle to make the transition to teaching/learning at a distance AND those that will support those teachers during this shift. The good news is we can all come together and grow together.

During the month of October, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) partner to celebrate Cybersecurity Month and they have been doing so for 20 years. I am not really sure if Cybersecurity Awareness Month is one I want to necessarily celebrate, but I do know it is incredibly important to build awareness. Educators play a crucial role in ensuring the security of both their own data and the data of their students....
