Just had a great swim lesson with Charles at the Reston Fairfax County YMCA. Charles is a very personable, experienced and knowledgeable swim instructor. He works with all age groups and all levels of experience. Charles is able to teach all the various swim strokes to the newbie youngster right up to the adult male or female who is looking to become a more efficient swimmer in the ocean for the swim leg when competing in a triathlon. I strongly encourage anyone looking to learn how to swim to get in touch with Charles Pabon at the YMCA in Reston. He is passionate about swimming and wants to see his students thrive and flourish in the water.

Thank you very much for sharing this information about our work.

Edu-Futuro has assisted more than 1,200 Latino and immigrant families who reside in Northern Virginia and disbursed more than $900,000 in emergency assistance funds since the pandemic started, for rent, utilities, food, medicine, and other emergencies, making us the largest immigrant-led nonprofit in the region, with a $2.68 million budget and a staff of 30 at the close of the last fiscal year.

But make no mistake, we need your support.

The services we provide are unique due to our bilingual-bicultural capacity, which is not provided by any other non-profit organization in the region. Our case managers assist our beneficiaries to navigate the services for emergency assistance, without having received any financial support for the assistance provided. When the federal government offered the second round of PPP loans, our organization did not qualify. Ironically, this was because our financials looked strong due to the $900,000 we were able to raise for emergency assistance since the pandemic started, despite the fact that these funds were a passthrough, leaving our organization with a higher level of demand, and disproportionately fewer resources.

So, Edu-Futuro has become the victim of its own success. The funds we have been able to secure for the delivery of emergency assistance only allowed 2% to 10% maximum to cover administrative costs.

Despite all of the challenges, we are very proud to inform you that we quickly adjusted our organization to help those thousands of families. On June 30, 2021, when our fiscal year ended, we had provided 3,385 services to 3,268 unduplicated children, youth, and adults.

For the 85 high school students we served through our Emerging Leaders Program for college applications, financial assistance, and scholarship applications, 83 students were accepted at colleges and universities. (The 2 students who opted not to attend college postponed their postsecondary education because they were the only ones who could get jobs in their families.) For their first year, our students received over $5.58 million in financial aid and scholarships, plus an additional $21.5 million to those students who secured four-year financial support.

These students are currently attending very prestigious universities like Yale, Stanford, Harvard, NYU, William and Mary, Marymount, George Mason, Northern Virginia Community College, George Washington, the University of Virginia, and Virginia Tech among others.

We would really appreciate it if you assist us in keeping the capacity we have to continue providing critical services to the members of our community in Northern Virginia.

Whether you can donate or not before the end of this campaign on December 31st, please visit our website and be a volunteer. We thank you in advance for supporting us.

When it comes to supporting mental health there are a lot of simple ways we can support others and ourselves. Today we want to focus on being genuine.

As we interact with coworkers, friends and new people it means a lot to invest & care and not just simple platitudes. Connections can make the difference in someones day.

Happy Mother's Day!

Summer camp positions offer a great opportunity to be an agent of change. The impact staff will have on our youngest communities members is hard to express but is easily seen. This impact could be unique handshakes created with campers or seeing that light bulb flick on when campers understand how a STEM project works.

Email our camp director at [email protected] with your resume or go to our website www.ymcadc.org/careers to apply today!

If you are looking for a fun and quick activity to do with your children this rainy weekend, try this fun STEM project which our afterschool kids loved doing.

All you need is paper, scissors, straws, yarn and tape. You can make these hands move by pulling the yarn which is a great illustration of how tendons move our own fingers!

The YMCA of Metropolitan Washington fosters the spiritual, mental and physical development of individuals, families and communities according to the ideals of inclusiveness, equality and mutual respect for all.
