When you think of Literacy Volunteers, you probably think of teaching someone how to read and write. Well, we offer more than that. We have a need in Jefferson and Berkeley Counties for math tutors. Our adult students are preparing to obtain their high school diploma, and need help in math. This is a very rewarding experience, helping other adults succeed in life. Hours are flexible, you must commit to 2 hours a week, we supply all the books, computers, etc. You must attend on-line training.

Why 36 million American adults can't read enough to work — and how to help them

If you are interested in becoming a literacy volunteer or are in need of our services, please contact us at 304-264-0298 or [email protected] In the U.S., 36 million adults lack the basic literacy skills needed to sustain employment -- yet education programs for this group serve only about 1.5 million, and funding continues to be cut at state and federal levels. Meanwhile, stigma can keep adults from reconnecting with the classroom. Kavit...

The annual meeting of Literacy Volunteers of the Eastern Panhandle (LVEP), held Saturday June 1st, at the Jefferson County Adult Learning Center in Ranson was well attended by volunteers, adult students and community partners. LVEP, an all volunteer non-profit, helps adults improve their basic skills and provides English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tutoring. The organization works closely with county Adult Education Programs, where volunteers also offer Citizenship classes, Microsoft Office Classes and certification, assistance in obtaining high school diplomas, and preparation for college.

Jane Wagner, LVEP President, gave an overview of recent activity including implementing online volunteer registration, and reporting and applying for grants to cover operation expenses. LVEP is also reaching out to community organizations which work with adults in need of literacy tutoring to explore new ways to serve. Kathy Held, LVEP Vice President, reported on volunteer activities and awarded a Certificate of Excellence to Emilia Ciuvica who, over the past 14 years, has been a student in volunteer-taught English, computer and Citizenship classes. She now works as the Administrative Assistant at the Jefferson County Adult Learning Center and is, herself, an active LVEP Volunteer. Emilia’s story is not unique, but is an example of the power of volunteers.

Yajaira Bird, another LVEP student talked about how volunteers have helped her. “All my English, my ability to continue my education and to work on US citizenship came because of the support I received from LVEP volunteers.”

In addition to the business meeting, all enjoyed a social gathering with light lunch, coordinated by Beth Rehberger, Board Member.

If you are interested in becoming a LVEP volunteer or are in need of any of our services, please contact us by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 304-264-0298.
