Hasbro Summer Design Studio 2018 08/06/2018

Looking back on an amazing week-long studio course with Hasbro at Project Open Door that took place in late July. Each morning Hasbro designers came to the POD studio to share their story and their professional work. Through presentations, demonstrations, design challenges and interactions with designers, POD teens uncovered the entire design process, from brainstorming and sketching to making it real and presenting. In the afternoons, teens worked with these new found skills to create their own toy or game design. By the end of the week each student had developed their very own product with a story behind it and presented it to the group. Their presentations and final products were truly impressive. We even fit in a tour of Hasbro!

Many many thanks to everyone at the Hasbro team who took the time to share their passion for their work, and to Chrisitne Enos, POD's teaching artist who guided the teens in their own making journey. Can't wait for next year!

More info:
Led by local photographer, youth mentor and Project Open Door (POD) Teaching Artist Scott Lapham, Crusade teens embarked on a fun filled artistic and scientific journey designed to encourage creative exploration of our world. Daily workshops brought teens to a better understanding of the science behind photography and provide an introduction to the natural and pre-photographic phenomenon of the Camera Obscura. Other exercises encouraged team work as teens to learned technical components of photography, such as shutter speed and lighting. Teens were also challenged to explore and interact with the city and people of Providence by using both their hard technical photo skills and their soft social skills. In collaboration with the RISD Nature Lab, teens also learned about the urban food chain in Providence and were able to photograph taxidermy specimens and then digitally collage their images together in photoshop!

***This year we had over 20 POD alumni exhibit some of their recent work, representing schools like Rhode Island College, Rhode Island School of Design, Community College of Rhode Island, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Rhode Island and Brown University. Many of these alums are studying art and design, majors vary from architecture and printmaking to graphic design and sculpture, while others are pursuing degrees such as public policy, engineering, education and more! We are so proud of and impressed by all of our POD alums and it was such a special night to have so many of them, accompanied and supported by friends and family, back in the studio to celebrate their recent work and creative accomplishments. Congrats to all!! ***
