Thank you Bethany Lutheran, Port Orchard, WA for this amazing donation! We are so thankful for your constant thoughtfulness! Our kids and families will greatly enjoy these items!
YOU GUYS!!
In October I was invited to attend a South Kitsap Rotary meeting to share both Bedtime Books at Bethany and Bethany Lutheran Preschool Power-Hour. It was FUN to be in a room full of people who love to support good in our community. They were a generous and joyful audience. I popped into the office this week to grab the Power-Hour folder and found an envelope that had arrived in October that I had missed. Inside was such an encouraging note and a check for $500 from a Rotarian! So exciting to know that our community values the good that God's people do here at Bethany Lutheran, Port Orchard, WA and that others are eager to support it with their own gifts!
We wanted to thank the people of Bethany Lutheran, Port Orchard, WA for their incredible and generous donations!!Their thoughtfulness will definitely help make Christmas extra special for our foster kids and their families this year.!

Sorry, no photos in uniform, but the upper photo is when I was just promoted to " Shellback", and the lower photo was taken while on liberty in Hong Kong. This was during my second Western Pacific Cruise in 1976-1977. The ship was the USS OKINAWA, LPH-3.

Last week Bethany asked our community for help to repair our flagpole after learning that renting a lift would cost $600. The way our community responded was beautiful. Rusty Rides Auto Sales, Park Vista by Bonaventure and several individuals offered assistance. Puget Sound Energy was the first agency to promise help and sent out a technician in a boom truck. What we thought would be a simple repair ended up being a bit more complicated. The technician, Cole, quickly realized we needed a new pulley.
You guys!! He ordered one from Amazon on the spot with his own money AND has offered to come back to install it on his own time!
Cole came back today. Fixed our flag pole AND entertained our Early Learning Friends!

Dear God,

This is a dark time. Sin has reared its ugly head. We are deeply saddened and troubled.

But we know that you are our help in trouble. You overcome the evils of this world. You lived, died and rose to defeat evil soundly and win for us the promises of eternal life.

Be with these families and friends.
Provide comfort and peace in the days, months and years ahead.
Give them friends to lead on in sadness.

Help us find confidence in your victory.
Give us faith in your presence.
Motivate us to show deep love to our family, friends and community.

In Jesus' name we pray,
Amen.

Thank you for the prayer Pastor Phil Kiecker

THE GOOD BOOK CLUB

Starting Sunday, May 29.

The Good Book Club is an invitation to all Bethany family and friends to join together in reading the Bible “as books.”

Each week we will read one of the shorter books of the Bible. Starting each Sunday, Pastor Pittenger will post a brief synopsis of this week’s book. Participants should set aside time to read through it during the week, ideally in one sitting. Questions and discussion can be posted throughout the week in the comments section below. The following Sunday a new book will be taken up beginning with a new synopsis.

Reading the books of the Bible in this way, in a single sitting of 10-30 minutes, reveals themes and vocabulary often missed during a slower, more methodical “study” of the Bible.

Since “faith comes by hearing the Gospel,” may God bless our time in His Word.

-Pastor Pittenger

Preschool is looking for a new assistant teacher!
Requirements: loves Jesus and preschoolers ❤

Our teacher assistants read stories, prep snacks, prep and teach projects, and PLAY! Early childhood experience would be wonderful, not not required.

Other important info 🧐
•The position would start ASAP.
•This is a preferably a full-time position. Part-time may be available depending on the applicant's availability.
•The applicant would be looking for a long-term position. Our preschoolers need to see a familiar face every day, therefore teacher retention is an important factor for our program.

Our prayer is that we would be able to fill this position with someone in our Bethany family. That doesn't mean they need to be connected to us currently, but we would love to be able to know someone who has a personal connection to the applicant 🤗

Those interested in the position should email Mrs. Denney (📧[email protected]).

Come PLAY 😍 and LEARN 🤓 with us!

May 2022 UPDATE

Grace and peace to all of you from Jesus the Good Shepherd.

Lots to share! Let me get right to it!

I have returned the call I’d received to serve as pastor at Faith Lutheran Church in Carthage, Missouri. (“Returned” means “I’m staying here.” Thanks to so many of you who shared your thoughts about this, I really do appreciate them.

This was a difficult decision to make. Over the past 26 years at Bethany I’ve been blessed with many experiences in the pastoral ministry, most of which have been fairly unique among pastors in our synod. For example; I’ve been part of the up-and-down life cycle of school enrollment, I’ve helped with a building campaign adding five additional classrooms, I’ve been part of a part-time Preschool transitioning to a full-time Early Learning Center, participated in the calling process for a dozen teachers, helped develop our Power Hour program which has been used in more than 15 other places around the country, facilitate our Bedtime Books program reaching thousands of people, been blessed to leading numerous parent/adult contacts through Christian instruction, and have been very involved in supporting the ministry of Evergreen Lutheran High School.

That’s a big list, isn’t it? While my family and I love it here with all of you, this is also what the church in Missouri needs. They need help taking those first steps. As I wrestled with this call I kept wondering “Is it time to share what Bethany has taught me? Is God’s will that I remain here doing all this or is it time to go somewhere else, sharing this knowledge in other places while making room for another pastor to gain the same knowledge here in Port Orchard?”

From my own perspective, (whether you agree in whole, in part, or not at all), that “Christian Education” aspect of both calls is what kept, has kept, and even first brought me here.

First brought me here…I am the product of a Lutheran School much like Bethany; graduating from Salem Lutheran School in Edmonds, WA. There, even unbeknownst to me, my faith was fed every day with God’s Word while Christian men and women were guiding and instructing me.

I am the product of Evergreen Lutheran High School. Again, unbeknownst to me, while I was goofing around, my teachers were patiently guiding and instructing me while my faith was being fed every day.

I would not be a pastor if not for Salem & Evergreen Lutheran, thus I would not be here.

Nor would Mrs. Bergemann. She’s a product of our own Bethany and Evergreen. Or Mr. Lai, he’s a product of Lakewood Lutheran and Evergreen. Mrs. Mantey grew up at St. Paul’s Lutheran and then Lakeside Lutheran High School, Mr. Mantey went to another St. Paul’s and to Martin Luther Academy for high school.

There are countless other examples and nowadays I often spend my time with parents like my own, answering questions about the Christian faith and the Christian life, baptizing their own children, walking along with them on the way to Heaven.

Jesus Himself said that the Church is to make believers by baptizing and by teaching.

We cannot overestimate the impact these institutions and programs have in one person’s life or in the life of a classroom or church sanctuary. Melissa and I make Evergreen work for our kids by painting our own house instead of hiring a painter, we avoid the burden of car payments by driving old junkers, we prioritize the cost of tuition over the countless other ways we could spend the money God blesses us with.

Being a part of baptizing and teaching and walking along with fellow Christians is what I love doing and that is what the church in Missouri was asking me to help them do.

But to help them and accept the call would be to deny my son and daughter the very thing I am so passionate about. Because there aren’t schools like Evergreen in the area of Carthage, my children would either no longer have what I personally believe to be so important OR that they would have that but not live with me in these last few years before they leave for college, military, or work-force. It is fair to say that the schools we own and operate ere a big part of staying versus going.

So, I’m staying but let this serve as fair warning: I intend to keep Christian instruction, for young and old, as one of Bethany’s top priorities.

OTHER NEWS…

Summer Worship Schedule begins on Memorial Day Weekend. What that means is that Sunday services on-and-after May 29 are at 9:00am. Monday worship remains unchanged.

Sunday School. Our awesome Sunday School teachers get the summer off, so there is no Sunday School during the summer. However, the adult Bible class has just started watching the series “The Chosen.” It looks like we will continue doing this after the 9am service. Your children are welcome to sit with you if you’d like to take part.

We are praying that camp Lutherhaven will be back this year. Dates would be July 9—14, I’m waiting to make sure we have enough volunteers before officially saying “We really are back.” Stay tuned…

Our youth group is back up and running. God blessed us with amazing proceeds in our Spring Sale so that now we are able to afford the high travel costs of attending the national youth convention this July. There, the teens will participate in Bible classes and worship services with pastors and teachers from across the country. They’ll be mixing, mingling, hiking, even dancing with other Christian teens just like themselves. Pray that God would bless our convention after a two-year COVID break.

Vacation Bible School is not on the schedule as of yet. We need volunteers to serve as director(s), teachers, craft, etc. The first step is to find a person or two to be directors.

As a congregation we continue to recover from COVID. The livestream was a god-send! I fear though that habits have been established which make attendance less of a priority. If there are medical reasons for persons to stay home, they certainly should. Yet I also wonder if church is the only place that people haven’t returned to.

Related to that is attendance. Before COVID, in 2019, our average Sunday/Monday attendance was 208. Running the numbers from this January thru April our average attendance is 127. That puts us at 61% of pre-COVID (or down by 39%). The Barna Institute is reporting national post-COVID church attendance at 80% of pre-COVID. No real surprise that we on the far west coast are behind the Midwest and the Bible belt.

But, thanks be to God, our offerings and stewardship aren’t down 39%. While they have dropped off a bit (again, no surprise) some people switched to “online” giving through their bank or a 3rd party service so that between offerings and COVID funds, we have been able to stay afloat. Pray that as those government funds dry up our own giving would increase to support the work of the church.

One more thing to share with everyone: a new ministry we’re calling “Bethany Blessed.” This is a partnership with World Vision where every month we receive some of their excess inventory and distribute them to Port Orchard, Kitsap County, and even the Olympic Peninsula! We’ve been able to get new socks to the homeless, blankets to victims of house fires, diapers to parents, toys to kids, even cooking appliances and furnishings to people in need of such things. All this is done under the banner of “Bethany Blessed” because we know that because God has blessed we are able to bless others with these things.

Bless, blessed, blessings. A summary of our life together here at Bethany, our church, our school, our early learning center; our fellowship with the churches, schools, and high school in the area; and our presence in our own community serving those God puts in our path. He doesn’t need our works, our service, or our offerings but our neighbors do! Pray that He will continue to do what He has been doing, for the saving of souls.

-Pastor Pittenger
